Students must following the procedure explained in Section 1.4 and Examples in the book,
starting by drawing a schematic and control volume, write down the assumptions, known, find,
properties, etc.
Problem 1.1.(3 points)
A 150-mm-diameter pan has a 6-mm-thick bottom plate, which may be made from aluminum (k
= 240 W/mK) or copper (k = 390 W/mK). When used to boil water, the surface of the bottom
exposed to the water is nominally at 120C. If heat is transferred from a stove to the pan at a rate
of 400 W, what is the temperature of the surface in contact with the stove for each of the two
materials?

Problem 1.2. (4 points)

A battery and a resistor are connected in a circuit, as shown in the following figure. After a brief
transient, the resistor reaches a nearly uniform, steady-state temperature of 90 C, while the
battery and the lead wires remain at the ambient temperature of 25 C. The electrical resistance
of the wires may be neglected.
(a) Consider the resistor as a system about which a control surface is placed and Equation 1.11a
is applied. Determine the corresponding values of E in W , E g W , E out W , and E st W .
If a control surface is placed about the entire system, what are the values of E in , E g , E out ,
and E st ?
(b) If electrical energy is dissipated uniformly within the resistor, which is a cylinder of diameter
D = 50 mm and length L = 200 mm, what is the volumetric heat generation rate, q (W/m3)?
(c) Neglecting radiation from the resistor, what is the convection coefficient?

Problem 1.3. (3 points)

A box of pizza is being cooled inside a room. Analyze the heat transfer mechanisms with and
without a cover above it. Which way the pizza will be cooled faster? Will the pizza be dried after
cooling? Explain it in the view point about heat transfer.
Schematic1.3:
*without cover

*with cover

Analysis1.3:
1. without cover
Conduction
(1) Through the bottom of the box
Convection:
(1) From the pizza to the air
Radiation:
(1) Net radiation exchange between the top surface of the pizza and the surroundings
2. with cover
Conduction
(1) Through the bottom of the box
(2) Through the cover
Convection:
(1) From the pizza to the inner wall of the cover
(2) From the outer wall of the cover to the air
Radiation:
(1) Net radiation exchange between the top surface of the pizza and the inner wall of
the cover
(2) Net radiation exchange between the outer surface of the cover and the surroundings
Comments1.3:
1. When there is no cover above the pizza, heat can be dissipated with a higher rate than the
one with cover.
2. Yes, it will be.
