manydifferentways,renderingthemunabletofunctionliketherestofus.Theseare
peopleimprisonedwithintheirownselves,theirhumanitychoked,beggingtobe
recognized.Peoplewhoseconditionsaresooddandrarethatothermedical
professionalswouldnotknowwhattodo.
"Thetruthisthatmostpracticingphysicianshave,apartfromtheirbroadmedical
training,littleindepthknowledgeofmanyconditions,especiallythosewhichare
consideredrare,andthusnotworthyofmuchtimeinmedicalschool,"Oliverwrotein
TheMind'sEye.Themorereason,hewouldargue,tolistentotheirstories,takethem
down,andusethemastheirpathtohealingor,atleast,toapathtowardawarenessof
theirconditionandhenceempathyandrespect.

withanenlightenedintellectandarefinementoffeelingthatfindsthehumanity
cloisteredinthedeepestrecessesofadamagedlife.Thestorieshetellsarethestories
