SECTION A

1. Part of the steel frame for a new leisure centre is shown in Figure 1.
Choose a suitable section for the column Mark C.
The column is horizontally braced.
At foundation level, the joint between the column and the baseplate is fully stiffened
against rotation.
At level 1, beams Mark A and Mark B are connected to the column through simple endplate connections.
Choose one universal column section for the design and comment on the result.

DESIGN DATA
Loadings
The total loads at level 1, including from the beams, are:
Characteristic dead load = 1800 kN
Characteristic imposed load = 750 kN
Include an allowance for the self weight of the column.

Materials
Steel UC sections grade S275

2. The beam Mark M, shown in Figure 2, forms part of the steel frame in a new industrial
complex. It supports the legs of a piece of plant and a steel chequer-plate floor.
The beam is fully laterally restrained by the chequer-plate floor.
Design the beam for
a. Bending
b. Shear
c. Check the chosen beam for deflection and comment on the result.
For the deflection check, use the unfactored imposed loads only.

DESIGN DATA
Loadings
Distributed loads due to the chequer-plate floor:
Characteristic dead load = 12 kN/m
Characteristic imposed load = 6 kN/m
Include the self weight of the beam.

Concentrated loads due to the stanchions:

Characteristic dead load = 250 kN
Characteristic imposed load = 90 kN

Materials
Steel UB sections grade S275

SECTION B

3. Details of a load bearing wall in a new residential development are shown in Figure 3.
Determine a suitable strength for the bricks and mortar in the wall from foundation to
level 1.

DESIGN DATA
Loadings
1. From the wall over:
Characteristic dead load = 30 kN/m
Characteristic imposed load = 10 kN/m

2. From the precast floor (each side):

Characteristic dead load = 28 kN/m
Characteristic imposed load = 14 kN/m
Include the self-weight of the wall from foundation to level 1. Pave brick work weighs 20
kN/m3

4. The timber deck shown in Figure 4 will be installed in a restaurant in an old barn
conversion.
Design the joists for
a. Bending
b. Shear
c. Check deflection

DESIGN DATA
Loadings
Dead loads:

- allow for the self weight of the structure

- timber weighs 5.6 kN/m3

Imposed loads:
