PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

It is with great pleasure and privilege I write this message

in our Souvenir, a memento of the Association of the Nair
Community of the Tristate Area.
As members of the Association, we all need to be aware
of the history of our Association, the struggle our
founding fathers and community leaders had undergone
in its formation and continued existence to its present
form and shape; their walk through often were over
thorns than rose petals. Today, NBA is one of the few
Indian community organizations in the Tristate Area that
has its own building and thanks for the visionaries who
tirelessly worked in securing a second home for its members. As a small community,
but rich and unique in its culture and heritage, we are in an endeavor to keep up with
our own flavor and identity in this melting pot of multiplex culture on this land of the
immigrants. Our Association is capable and willing to meet its community needs and
has planned numerous programs throughout the year, engaging families, young and
old alike in experiencing and relating with rest of the community members. In order to
foster community spirit in our next generation and having awareness of who is a Nair
rather than bearing Nair as a mere last name, our young parents must task
themselves to bring their kids to all our community programs religious and cultural
alike, thereby introducing them to our values and beliefs.
As a Hindu community organization, we believe in the philosophy of Vasudhaiva
Kutumbakam; meaning the whole earth is one family. If the whole ocean is one, how
then a drop of the ocean is different from the ocean. We believe in the coexistence of
all religions, faith and culture. Even before western thinkers of the seventeenth and
eighteenth century come across with ideas on fraternity and socialism, our great Rishis
and Acharayas taught us thousands of years before the basic principles of love and
humanity, Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavandu, all beings living in this earth has a
right to live in happiness, joy and free from all sufferings.
I wish continued success to all our community members and well-wishers. I extend my
sincere thanks to all those who sponsored pages, gave us advertisements, financial
assistance and provided valuable articles for publishing.
Also commends goes to the Souvenir Committee Chair Rajagopal Kunnappallil, CoChair Jayaprakash Nair, Sri Ashok Kesavan and other committee members for their
hardwork in publishing a beautiful Souvenir for the Association.
Let us protect Dharma which in turn protect us.
Sincerely

Reghuvaran Nair
NBA President

Dear Members,
More than 30 years since its inception, NBA has
had a great run and will continue to. I am very
proud to be a part of it and I am sure all our
members are equally proud of NBA's presence.
NBA has brought members belonging to Nair
community together. Each and every member has
many wonderful memories to cherish. I personally
have understood more and have come much closer
to our Nair culture after becoming a part of NBA.
The festivals of Kerala - VISHU, ONAM has not come so close to every
member of every family like it is now. I can say with full faith that
every child in every Nair household residing here in America is much
more well versed about these festivals than our counterparts in the
rest of the world. I thank NBA and its members to make it so
wonderful and delightful. NBA has also embarked us on to a devotional
journey by conducting monthly bhajans, Bhagavatha vayana and
weekly Mandalakalam bhajans thereby increasing our Spiritual wealth.
I think we can all agree that being part of NBA has molded us in to
becoming a better human being.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all our Executive Committee
members for their dedication and hard work and for voluntarily
taking out time from their day to day activities in planning and
executing our events and to make our association a progressive place
for all of us and in providing a positive and uplifting environment for
our youth. I would like to thank all our members who have actively
supported us in all our planned events. I hope and pray that members
of our community come together always and make NBA a home away
from home.
We had the good fortune of meeting and being amidst well
accomplished and learned people this year and in meeting and
seeing these, it made me understand that humility is the most revered
character in a person.
Let us as members work together, respect one another and own
the Association and strengthen it.
Best wishes,

Mrs. Shobha Karuvakkat

NBA Board of Trustee Chairmans message

On this special occasion, I would like to pay my

humble tribute to Nair community leaders Sri. Chattampi
Swamikal and Sri. Mannathu Padmanabhan for their
outstanding service to the Nair community.

It gives me immense pleasure to work with Nair

Benevolent Association (NBA) for the past several years.
The purpose of NBA is to connect Nair families in Tri state
area and other parts of North America to promote and
facilitate cultural, educational, social and economic welfare of NBA families and Nair
communities at large in North America and other parts of the world. As you all aware, NBA
has been conducting so many social, community and religious activities for the past several
years and I am humbled to be part of the team. All these activities were possible only
because of continuous support and cooperation each one of you Executive Committee and
Board of Trustee. Going forward, NBA should also focus more for benefit of our younger
generation.

I hope that social, community and cultural activities of the NBA will continue more vigorously
to benefit the members of NBA. I take this occasion to extend my sincere thanks and
gratitude to NBA family members, Executive Committee and Board of Trustee teams. I wish
all success for the future committees to take NBA to much higher levels. I wish a very happy
and prosperous Vishu for all NBA members.
Thank you.

The message from the former President Year 2013-2014

Vishu Greetings to all of you!
I am deeply honored and privileged to write a few lines in
Panchajanyam, Nair Benevolent Association's (NBA) Souvenir of
2014-2015. Ever since I came to the USA, I have been an active member
and participant of the NBA. As an organization of the Nair Community
NBA has actively engaged not only in promoting our culture, beliefs, heritage by celebrating our
important religious festivals like Onam and Vishu with all its color, but also conducting events like,
Monthly and Mandalakaala Bhajans, Bhagavatha Parayanams, Graduation Day, Family Night and
Picnic, and Children's Day, spanning year around. I can proudly say that NBA, as a cultural and
religious organization, has exemplified a sense of belonging and unity among all of our community
members men, women and children alike. Also, we conducted Bhagavatha Sapthaham at our
Center with great enthusiasm. Most of the NBA members participated in it as if they were
participating in a local village temple festival. The diverse programs and events we have today testify
the advancement, expansion, and growth of our organization. It is our obligation to support this
trend for our future generation. It is vital to practice, cherish, nurture, and celebrate the profound
heritage we have inherited from our motherland. During my tenure as the President of the NBA
2013-2014, my efforts were mostly centered in forming the Women's Forum, promoting children
and youth, and raising fund for the association. As in the case of every organization that strives to
grow beyond generations, I am sure; NBA can survive only if it engages the women and children in
all activities. I am also very pleased to see the publication of Panchajanyam, our Souvenir, the
product of a proposal that was initiated during my presidency and for which Sri Rajagopal
Kunnappallil was elected as the Chief Editor, and Mr. Jayaprakash Nair, as the Editor. They
elegantly materialized it on this Vishu Day of 2015.
"Publish or perish" is a maxim that controls the world of history from primitive times. Some of the
ancient civilizations tried to preserve their history through sculptures, murals, carvings, art and
architecture, folk songs, inscriptions on rock and much more. It is beyond doubt that those kinds of
publications provide a good insight into the life and culture of those civilizations, like ours, and are
containers of history. When writing materials and printing technology developed, keeping history
became less difficult. Let this souvenir, The Panchajanyam, be an effort to perpetuate the history of
Nair Benevolent Association.
Once again, I thank you all for the overwhelming support, trust and encouragement you gave me
during my tenure as the President of NBA 2013-14. Requesting your continued co-operation,

NBA Womens Forum

Rajeswari Rajagopal
A new subcommittee of NBA-NBA Womens Forum- was proposed by
Mrs. Vanaja Nair the sitting NBA President and the same was approved
by the Executive Committee of 2013-2014. Mrs. Rajeswari Rajagopal
and Mrs. Jayasree Nair were nominated as the Chair Person and CoChair Person of the Womens Forum respectively.
The goal of this Committee is to bring the women of the association to the forefront as a group and
also to create programs that focus specifically on the health and wellbeing of women and children.
The womens forum was officially launched on June 23, 2013 at Shahi Palace Restaurant. Mrs.
Kumudam Menon, a senior member of NBA, lit the ceremonial lamp in the presence of over 100 Nair
families. Following the lamp lighting, about 30 women signed up as members of the Womens Forum.
The first meeting of the Womens Forum was held on July 19, 2013 at 7 PM and located at the NBA
Center. The following activities and goals were planned and established during this meeting:
1. To hold a monthly Womens Forum meeting on the 3rd Friday of the month at 7 pm, at the
center.
2. To donate at least 10,000 rupees (approximately $200), two times a year, to deserving charity
organizations in Kerala. Will collect 10 dollars from each member during Onam and Vishu for
this purpose.
3. To conduct a workshop on a womens issue.
4. To conduct a Health Day/Health Fair focusing on womens health.
5. To go for a group trip to a place of members choice.
6. To socialize and dine at a fun group get-together.
7. To learn Ramayana Parayanam and Vishnu/Lalitha sahasranama recitation.
Accomplishments:
1. Donation to Charity.
Rs. 13,000 was donated to Ochira Annadana (Orphanage) Fund in September 2013.
Rs. 10,000 was donated to Sabari Balasramam in Aranmula in December 2013.
2. Group Trip. The group went on a pleasure trip to Atlantic City on October 19, 2013. About 25
members participated in the trip and it was well enjoyed by all.
3. A Workshop on Womens Empowerment Towards Making a Healthy and Happy Family was
conducted on October 20, 2013.
Dr. AKB Pillai and Mrs. Dhanya Pillai were the speakers.
4. A Health Fair/Health Seminar was held on December 8, 2013. The following were the
highlights:
a) Cooking Competition for the children of different age groups- ages 8 years and below, age
9 years to 14 years, and age 15 years and above. 21 children participated in the
competition. Food items were carefully chosen to match the age and the skills of the
group. Winners were judged on the taste, presentation, innovation, and ability to describe
steps in cooking. First, second , and third prizes were distributed to the winners.
Mrs. Beena Menon, Mrs. Deepa Nair, and Mrs. Radhamony Nair did an outstanding job as
coordinators of the cooking contest.
b) A Health Seminar was in the afternoon on the same day on the following topics:
Good Heart, Kind Heart, Is it a Healthy Heart? By Dr. Nisha Pillai, MD.
Age Appropriate Screening. By Dr. Smitha Pillai, MD.

30 of 132

Change in Season- A cause for change in mood. By Dr. Geetha Menon, MD.
Alcohoism, a Family Disease. By Ms. Janelle Hartman, LCSW
All of the above were well presented and well received by the audience.
1. NBA Mandalapuja and Bhajana. Womens Forum sponsored the bhajana on January 4, 2014.
Mrs. Susheelamma Pillai was the team leader for Bhajana. She led the team in singing the
bhajana in a methodical and organized manner.
2. Mothers Day gathering and Dinner. Over 40 members gathered at Nan King restaurant on
May 8, 2014 to celebrate Mothers Day. While enjoying the Asian Indian fusion dinner, the
group also had fun socializing with each other.
3. Ramayana Parayanam. Mrs. Retna Rajan coordinated the lessons on Ramayana parayanam
and also in reciting Vishnu Sahasranamam. This is a work in progress.
YEAR 2014-2015
In April of 2014, the new Executive Committee headed by Mr. Reghuvaran Nair as the
President took charge of the NBA. Mrs. Rajeswari Rajagopal was re-nominated as the
Chairperson of the Womens Forum. Mrs. Padmini Narikot was nominated as the Co-Chair.
The womens membership remained much the same. The group decided to continue the
goals set last year. The following additional activities were added:
1. A Telephone tree was formulated. Selected telephone numbers were assigned to
volunteers from WF. Designated volunteers will call their assigned members to notify
them of meetings and other activities. This is done to improve attendance to meetings and
other activities.
2. A panel discussion was conducted on December 28, 2014. The topics of the discussion
were:
Acting prudent with respect to police contact situation, by Mr. Ranjith Menon, PO from
NYPD,
Must have legal documents and know-how, By Runa Rajagopal, Esq., Supervising
Attorney from The Bronx Defenders
Psycho social needs of the Youth, By Dr. Reveendra Amin, MD, Chief of Psychiatry from
CGSH and NF.
Winter Gala. A winter Gala was held on January 4, 2015 at 2 pm. The Gala started with Games and
Quizzes coordinated by Mrs. Kala Satish who did an outstanding job selecting and executing the right
games for the group. Prizes were distributed to the winners. Following the games members
exchanged New Year gifts from their Secret Santa. The Gala ended with an elaborate dinner at Luigis.
Dinner and exchange gifts were coordinated by Mrs. Shobha Karuvakkat, which was enjoyed by all.
3. NBA Bhajana. WF sponsored two bhajanas, one on October 11, 2014, and one on Jan 10,
2015.
4. Lalithasahasranama recitation- restarted practice lessons.
5. Stretching Exercise. Introduced stretching exercise to the group. 30 minutes stretching
exercise will be done prior to the start of the regular meeting.
6. Donation to Charity. Collected 170 dollars during Onam for donation to Sabari
Balasramam at Aranmula.
As is reflected above, in just a short time, the Womens Forum has become a force within NBA,
creating an empowered space for education, socializing and support. None of these events would be
possible, nor their success, without the hard work, enthusiasm and commitment of over 30 WF
members. We look forward to an active 2015.

OUR UNFORGETABLE
CHAR DHAM TOUR
S. Ramachandran Nair, MD
Staten Island, New York
The term char dham refers to four dhams
(places of abode). These are the Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badarinath and Kedarnath. We were not
allowed access to the last one because of road
conditions. We traveled in three buses a group of
about fifty people mostly Malayalees living in
USA.
My wife Suprabha(Omana) and I arrived
from JFK in Delhi on September 13, 2014. The
next day and onwards for the next two weeks,
our tour leader and spiritual guide was Swamy
Udit Chaitanya. We hit the road running on the
14th with a visit in Delhi to the Akshardham,
which is considered one of manmade wonders of
the world. This is also called Swaminarayan
Akshardham known for its architectural splendor,
and spectacular viewing in color at night. We
proceeded to Haridwar on the 15th and we had
aarati at har ki paudi, literally meaning the foot
steps of Hari, the Lord. This is a famous ghat on
the banks of Ganga. On the 16th we traveled to
Janki Chatti. The roads were what we call hairpin bends literally with the mountain precipice on
one side where we could not see the bottom.
These bends were at times so acute that the bus
had to be put into reverse to make them. The very
tenuous barriers were broken every so often for
reasons that we did not want to think about.
Some parts of the road appeared nearly
impassable from recent land slides on the side of
the mountain. Needless to say, we had an expert
UK (Utterkand) Gover nment bus driver and our
lives depended on him for the left side and on
God Himself for the right side! The scenery
everywhere would convince you how this part of
the world is called Deva Bhoomi. We reached
there at night and experienced some difficulty
with the stay at night. The accommodation was
part of government guest houses and not the best
in terms of comfort. But it was only a night, and
we were on a pilgrimage, and faced this without
much of a problem. Also the choice of traveling

61 of 132

up the narrow passage to Yamunotri, a distance

of seven kilometers, had to be made riding on
the back of a mule, carried on a palanquin, or
literally walking. Some of us decided to go up on
the mule and walk down with Swamiji, others
both ways on the mule and the remainder being
carried up and down on the palanquin. The mule
riders are always accompanied by a helper(Fig.1).

As the name indicates, Yamunotri is the

source of the Yamuna river and the temple there
is famous. We were already up at a height of
10,700 feet and some of us had to be medicated
for altitude sickness. However, the weather
continued to cooperate and Swamiji wasted no
time in reminding us how lucky we were. Before
darsan at the temple, we took a dip in the hot
springs, and the water was just about as hot as
you can tolerate. This was an enclosed area

with water full of natural elements able to help

relieve arthritic pains (Fig.2).
We had darsan at the temple and reached
back at Jan ki Chatti without incident. We then
left for Uttarkashi on our next round winding our
way to Gangotri where we took a dip in the
chilled waters of Ganga River. We stayed there
for two nights of the 18th and 19th (Fig.3).On the
morning of the 19th we visited Tapovan Ashramam and the Soumya Kasi Temple. The surroundings of the ashram were so peaceful and very
auspicious by the rare tall devadaru trees. One
could sit in the same place where Swami Chinmayananda took diksha from Swami Tapovan. I
recalled in my mind the memory of Himagiri
Vihar written by Swami Tapovan. I was introduced to this great work of Swami Tapovan by my
guru Poojya Swami Vidyananda Theerthapadar
of the Vazhoor Theerthapadashramom.

September 20th saw us leaving Uttarkashi for Badrinath, the last lap of our pilgrimage of
the Char Dham tours. We went via Srinagar
where we stayed. The next day we traveled to
Badrinath and passed through Rudraprayag. In
Rudraprayag our bus paused to take in the breathtaking view of the confluence of the river
Mandakini originating from Kedarnath and
Alakananda. After this point it flows on as
Alakananda. At Karnaprayag, Alkananda is
62 of 132

joined by Pindari river originating in the glacier

at Bageshwar. One can distinguish this from the
clean waters of the joining river. We reached
Badrinath on the evening of the 21 st passing an
area 7 km away from one of the protected
National Parks of India valley of flowers. This
area is rich in spectacular abundance of naturally
growing flowers.
At Badrinath, on the morning of 22nd, we
witnessed the ice-capped Neelkanth mountain
peak which turns golden with the early morning
sun rays before our eyes. Within a short time with
the arrival of the full sun, it turns white!(Figs.left
side). We then prayerfully sat on the banks of
Alakananda in bone-chilling cold and did
Shradha karma for our ancestors. We came back
to the guest house, had breakfast and then visited
the village. We walked towards the utbhavam
of Saraswati river and witnessed bhim pul the
big massive rock that Bhima moved to make a
bridge for Panchali. From there we walked to
Vyasa Guha. Vyasa divided the Vedas into four
sections meditating in this location. Visiting this
place was a divine experience which words
cannot describe.
It was lunch time when we came back,
and in the evening we took part in Vishnu
Sahasranamam chanting at the Temple.
On the morning of 23rd of September, we
left Badrinath to proceed all the way back to
Rishikesh a distance of 300 km going downhill.
This part of the journey was long and arduous
with winding roads. However, we were traveling
towards more level grounds from a height of
more than 10,000 feet, and this was comforting.
Generally the altitude traveling is never done at
night, but in reaching more level grounds we had
to travel into the night. Also the air conditioning
got turned on as the outside temperature started to
rise and the heavy climb was over. We stayed at
Rishikesh that night and the next day was spent in
sightseeing in Rishikesh. We visited Vasishta
Guha 22 km back along the route to Badrinath.
We walked over Lakshman Jhula an iron
suspension bridge across Ganga that was
supposed to be used by Lakshmana. This took us
to September 25th. This day marked the day we
visited Daksha Prajapati temple where Daksha
Yaga was performed and Sati burned herself
according to Siva Puranam. This was followed by
a visit to the beautiful Anandamayi Ma Ashram,

and took the ropeway to the Chandi Devi Temple.

We went back for lunch and in the afternoon did
some shopping on our own.
The next day the 26th we left on our tour
of Vrindavan in Mathura. Mathura, the birth place
of Lord Krishna is located 140 km south east of
Delhi and 60 km north west of Agra. This was an
experience in itself. The Shat Shikhar Temple in
Vrindavan hosted us to a luscious evening of
Raslila dance and recreation of the very
embodiment of Radha and Krishna in a girl and
boy dressed in that uniform that we would pay
obeisance to. The next day we visited the birth
place of Lord Krishna which is now a temple.
Then we visited the Goshala where more than
five hundred cows are cared for in a very clean
environment. This was started by a westerner
from Texas forty years ago recognizing the sad
plight of these sacred cows. We had the good
fortune to meet with this person with a heart of
gold. We spent two more days in Vrindavan and
visited several temples. The spectacular Prem
Mandir devoted to Lord Krishna was quite a sight
in the day time and some of us went back for the
night lights. On our last full day in Vrindavan
(28th), we also took part in feeding several women
with domestic issues and giving them sarees and
money. This was a regular event at the Shat
Shikar Temple. On 29th we reached Delhi and on
September 30th we took a flight to Kerala.
When we were testing the lower reaches
of the worlds tallest mountain at 12,000 feet, one
could not but wonder at the awe of it all, and
realize that the Grand Canyon pales in
comparison. No wonder that the natural beauty
and tranquility of the area attracted great souls
like Swami Tapovan and others to meditate and
contribute so much to the benefit of all of us. I am
sure I would have left out so many details that I
failed to notice and yet so obvious to some others
going through this same once in a life time
experience. The interdependence of the humankind was also obvious during our trips. When we
were at Yamunotri we could see the happiness on
the face of the local workers coming out of a bad
season and ready to help us with the mule rides
and the palanquin. While in Vrindavan, we
realized that we were walking on the same soil
that Lord Krishna once walked in the previous
Yuga hundreds of thousands of years ago.
However, the many small children born in that
63 of 132

area were also eagerly looking forward to

welcoming us! The entire trip was a blessing
from Bhagavan. Most sightseeing becomes just a
memory soon after the trip is over, and this one,
therefore, was special and will last a lifetime.

MAHABHARATA: A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

B. Gopinadhan Pillai

Mahabharata is the greatest Epics of the

world both in its contents and size. It consists of
over 1, 00,000 couplets. Indeed it is the longest
literary work ever written in any language and it is
eight times longer than the Iliad and Odyssey put
together.
Vedas and the Upanishads are written in
Vedic Sanskrit. The main feature of Vedic Sanskrit
is that it gives great importance to the accent and
in the course of time the importance of accent is
voided.
Sanskrit written without attaching
importance to accent is called classic Sanskrit.
Mahabharata is written in classic Sanskrit.
Mahabharata is regarded as the storehouse of political wisdom, the repository of
philosophical doctrine and the treasury of
religious thoughts exercising tremendous
influence on major literary works of all different
Indian Languages. Classic literary works such as
Kalidasas
Shakunthala, Kumarasambhava,
Reghuvamsa, and the dramas of Bhasa such as
Dutavakya, Karna-bhara, Pancharatra, and
Urubhanga are all based on the stories from
Mahabharata. Ramayana and Mahabharata are
the two gems of Indian literature and the
foundation of Indian culture. A complete picture
of the then prevailing society, literature and
culture can be found in these two epics. The
main theme of Mahabharata is the rivalry of the
cousins Kauravas and Pandavas and various other
kings.
Bhagavd Gita is an integral part of
Mahabharata found in Bhishma Parva. It is the
essence of all the Vedas and Upanishad. The
famous teachings of Lord Krishna to Arjuna
contained in 700 verses (701 according to some
versions as the 13th Chapter has an additional
verse which starts with a question by Arjuna) are

74 of 132

divided into eighteen chapters. Krishnas advices

removed the despondency of Arjuna and enabled
him to do his duty without looking for its result.
These teachings are not only relevant to Arjuna,
but also are relevant to everyone anywhere at
any time to overcome the difficult situations in
their lives.
Maharshi Sri Krishna Dvaipayana Veda
Vyasa known as Vyasa is the author of
Mahabharata. He was born to Maharshi Parasara
and Satyavati. It is believed that the composition
took place before 1000 B.C.
The story of Mahabharata has been
narrated through eighteen books called Parvas
and a supplement, known as Harivamsha. These
are:
Adi Parva: The story begins with the account of
genealogy of Bharatas, the history of Chandra
Vamsha, the origin of Pandavas and Kauravas.
The ancestor of the royal house of Kuru is
Shantanu, who married to Ganga and got a son
Devavrita who later came to be known as Bhisma.
Shantanu married Satyavati and got two sons
Chitrangada and Vichitravirya. Chitrangada was
killed in a combat with a Gandharva of the same
name through his greater prowess. Vichitravirya
got two wives Ambika and Ambalika but who also
died without having any progeny. With the help
of Vyasa, the widows of Vichitravirya got two sons
Dhritarashtra on Ambika and Pandu on Ambalika.
A third son Vidura was born to Vyasa on the maid
of Ambika. Dhritharashtra who was blind by birth
married to Gandhari and got hundred sons and a
daughter known as Kauravas. Pandu who was
pale by birth married to Kunti who gave birth to
three sons Yudhishthira, Bhima and Arjuna.
Pandu got two more sons Nakula and Sahadeva
on his second wife Madri. Kunti had occasion to

serve the great Maharshi Durvasav in her younger

days. Pleased with her devoted service, Maharshi
blessed her with a boon to invoke any gods she
like and beget sons on them. Out of curiosity to
test the Mantra she invoked Sun god and got a
son Karna before she was married with Pandu.
Sabha Parva: The dice game between Shakuni, on
behalf of Duryodhana, and Yudhishthira. Shakuni
cheats and defeats Yudhishthira in the game and
lost everything including his wife Draupadi.
Vana Parva: This describes the exile of Pandavas
in the forest and Krishnas visit to Pandavas and
incites them to fight.
Virat Parva: This describes the life of the
Pandavas in disguise in the kingdom of Virata.
Udyoga Parva: Krishnas effort of reconciliation
between Kauravas and Pandavas to avoid the
war.
Bhishma Parva: It describes the long preparation
of the war and famous teachings of Sri Krishna to
Arjuna known as Bhagavad Gita or the Celestial
Songs.
Drona Parva: The killing of Abhimanyu and Drona
and conclusion of the fifteenth day of the war are
described in this Parva.
Karna Parva: Bhima kills Dussashana and Arjuna
kills Karna in Karna Parva.
Shalya Parva: This deals with the war and
execution of Shalya by Yudhishtira and Sahadeva
kills the venomous Shakuni. Duryodhana takes
refuge in the lake and hides himself under water
through his magical power. Bhima strikes the
deadly blow with his mace on the thigh of
Duryodhana and kills him.
Swastika Parva: It describes the tragic story of
the killing of the five sons of Droupadi by
Aswathama.
Stri Parva: The ladies of Kauravas visit the battle
field and lament near the corpses of their
husbands.

Shanti Parva: The story of Karna is being

revealed. Yudhishthira decides to expiate his
fratricide by leaving the throne and going to the
forest. He is dissuaded from doing so by Bhishma
at the instance of Krishna.
Anushasana Parva: The main event in this Parva
is Bhishmas expiry.
Ashramavasika Parva: This gives the description
of the Vanaprasthasrhrama of Dhritarashtra and
Gandhari after fifteen years of their life with
Pandavas.
Mausala Parva: The Yadavas fight themselves
and every one dies. Balarama had set himself to
Yoga, changed himself to Adisesha and proceeded
to the ocean. Having controlled all his sense
Krishna laid himself down in high Yoga. A hunter
of the name Jara mistaking him as a deer shot an
arrow on his feet. When he came near to fetch
his prey he realized his mistake. The Lord
comforted him and left the world.
Mahaprasthanika Parva: It describes Pandavas
going to heaven. The five brothers and Droupadi
died except Yudhishthira.
Svargarohana Parva: Yudhishthira refuses to
enter heaven if his brothers and his dog are not
allowed with him.
Mahabharata is the most significant book
from
Indias
religious,
social,
political,
geographical and cultural life. Vyasa has stated:
Dharme charthe cha mokshe cha
bharatharshabha
Yadihasthi thadanyatra yennehasthi na thath
krachit
(Adi Parva Ch. 62/53)
O best of Bharata race, whatever about Dharma,
Artha, Kama and Moksha, that is contained in this
Bharata, may be met with elsewhere; but
whatever is not in it, is not to be found
anywhere.

Respect
Rajesh Kavully
Have you ever wondered yourself "who am I?"
Not the body you see thru your naked eye
Mind, body, soul, conscious and ego, Oh my!
God and heaven, Is it really up above the sky
Searching for the mighty truth and purpose
Is there a way to find out who is virtuous
When our religion is suppose to be righteous
How did we become so corrupt and impious
Instead of penetrating truth from ancient literatures
Why didn't we honor and utilize our old scriptures
Every religion wrote it thinking only of their culture
Why don't we combine all and build a better future
God is as real as you and I, but not a person or object
Infinite energy that is keeping us alive in all aspect
Why bicker at the variation and destroy our our intellect
Open your mind and live a life full of morals and respect.

A new center for treAtment of

Autism spectrum DisorDers (AsD) in KerAlA, inDiA
Simmi Santha
A great need to support families and
children with ASD has been identified in the state
of Kerala, India, and responding to this need,
Mrs. Simmi Santha, the first recipient of Reeta
Peshawaria Menon fellowship award, is setting up
a center to provide services to individuals and
families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Simmi has been awarded the fellowship award for
field testing and completion of a manual for
parents and caregivers of children with autism
spectrum disorders.
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a
neurodevelopmental disorder, currently affecting
around 1 in 68 children born in the United States
as per CDCs Autism and Developmental
Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network. It is
characterized by significant delays in speech and
language development, difficulty with social skills,
repetitive behaviors, and sensory sensitivities in
some cases. Each child or individual with autism
is very different but they have some things in
common with each other.
In the area of social interactions children
and individuals with ASD:

May look away from people

May appear to ignore what people are
saying
May move away from people

In the area of communication children and

individuals with ASD:

May remain silent

May talk to objects
May repeat what they are saying
May say the same things over and over

In the area of play, children and individuals with

ASD:

May not be able to play with toys as they

were designed

May not be able to pretend with friends or

with toys

May only be interested in one thing (i.e.

trains, balls, or string)

May only do the same thing over and over

(i.e. line up cars, turn wheels)
In addition children and individuals with ASD
may engage in unusual behavior such as:

May like too much order or sameness

May dislike change

May be attracted to spinning or rotating

objects such as wheels, fans, etc.

May exhibit unusual facial and bodily

movements like grimacing, jumping, hand
flapping.

May laugh inappropriately and frequently

May become upset for no apparent reason

May show unusual response to sensations

May appear to be indifferent to pain, heat

or cold
Some people with autism have average or
above average mental functioning. Other people
with autism have below average mental
functioning and we often refer to these
individuals as having multiple disabilities or
having developmental delays (DD) and autism or
having mental retardation and autism.
Individuals with autism have abilities that
are different from other individuals. It is
important for parents, siblings, caregivers, and
professionals to assist individuals to overcome
areas of weaknesses by providing her/him the
right kind of support while celebrating the areas
of strength. The most prevalent and effective
therapy which is evidence based follows the
principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
Reeta Peshawaria Centre for Autism and
ABA services was conceived and set up by Mrs.
Simmi Santha, a professional who has been
specializing in the field of developmental
disorders, and autism spectrum disorders for the
past 20 years in India, USA, and currently in

102 of 132

Canada. This center is named after Simmis late

professor, Dr. Reeta Peshawaria Menon. Dr.
Reeta Peshawaria Menon was a Clinical
Psychologist who worked in the field of
Intellectual Disability. Her special interests were
in ABA, ASD, Cognitive Behavior Therapies
(CBT), Managing Challenging Behaviors, and
working with Families, especially Parents of
persons with Autism, Intellectual and
Developmental Disabilities. She had contributed
42 research and scholarly articles, 6 Chapters in
Professional Books and 13 Books on Intellectual
Disability, Adaptive Behaviors and Strengthening
Families. India Vision Foundation has instituted
an annual award named Reeta Peshawaria
Fellowship Award for promoting research and
studies in Applied Behavior Analysis. The
National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped
offers Reeta Peshawaria Oration Award every
year for outstanding contribution in the field of
Intellectual Disability. PARIVAAR, a national
Federation of Parent Organizations gives away
National Award for the Best Parent Organization
named Reeta and Premlata Peshawaria Award.
Reeta was the Junior National Tennis Champion
and won Inter-varsity Trophy during 1970 jointly
with her famous elder sister Dr. Kiran Bedi.

Simmi is supported in her project by

Dr.Nicole Luke, and Dr. Desh Keerti Menon.
Dr.Nicole Luke, Behavior Analyst, based in
Toronto. Dr. Luke holds a degree in Applied
Behavior Analysis from Columbia University,
New York, and has been working with children
and families diagnosed with ASD and other
developmental disabilities for more than twenty
years. Dr.Desh Keerti Menon, a Clinical Psychologist based in UK has been active in the fields of
Mental Health, Disability Rehabilitation and
Intellectual Disability, a professional career that
began in 1971 till he sought retirement in 2011.
The center will start functioning as of June
4, 2014, and is currently based in Pattanamthitta
District, Kerala. The scope of the center is not
limited to the state of Kerala as Simmi is already
providing consultative services to centers in the
states of Orissa, and Jharkhand. She will also be
travelling to Salalah, Oman this summer with the
intent of extending services wherever there is a
need.
Individuals who are interested in more
information or joining the cause can e-mail Simmi
at simmi.rpc@gmail.com. You can also find more
information about the center on face book at
https://www.facebook.com/indiaautism.
