University of Maryland Increases Minority Enrollment 8.7%


COLLEGE PARK, Md. The University of Maryland reports minority enrollment increase.
The university has taken a significant step forward, President Loh said. Minority enrollment
has increased by nearly nine times more than the overall increase in student enrollment this fall.
Results show the largest increase of minority students were American Indian with 29 percent.
Minority enrollment figures are listed below:

Faculty and administrators of the university have worked hard to achieve this increase in
minority enrollment. President Loh encourages continued progress. This is only the beginning,
President Loh said. The university strives to further increase minority enrollment in the future.

UMD Author Suggests Solution to Test-Obsessed Society
Proposed elimination of non-performance based testing
Do answers affect actions? Private thoughts invaded and life paths affected by your test
answers. F. Allan Hanson, professor of anthropology at the University of Maryland, suggests
non-performance based testing is invasive and unnecessary. He argues that societys obsession
with testing has gone too far. He advocates for elimination of various test forms including:
intelligence, aptitude and behavioral. Hanson also detests lie detectors and drug tests.
His book Testing Testing: Social Consequences of the Examined Life, unpacks the
possible negative effects of tests that measure a persons intelligence or predict future behavior.
Hanson said these test forms focus more on learning private traits of a persons life than actual
knowledge. People are examined and evaluated less for qualifications or knowledge they
already possess than for what the test results can predict about future actions or potential
behavior, Hanson said.
Negative testing effects
The intention behind testing is in question. Hanson said these test forms begins to
categorize peoples lives and actions based on their results.

Hanson said that tests measuring performance are most useful. He argues that elimination
of non-performance test forms is possible and some universities have already begun the process.
