Americanwiregauge(AWG),alsoknownastheBrown&Sharpewiregauge,isastandardizedwiregaugesystemusedsince1857
predominantlyinNorthAmericaforthediametersofround,solid,nonferrous,electricallyconductingwire.Dimensionsofthewiresaregivenin
ASTMstandardB258.[1]Thecrosssectionalareaofeachgaugeisanimportantfactorfordeterminingitscurrentcarryingcapacity.
Increasinggaugenumbersdenotedecreasingwirediameters,whichissimilartomanyothernonmetricgaugingsystems.Thisgaugesystem
originatedinthenumberofdrawingoperationsusedtoproduceagivengaugeofwire.Veryfinewire(forexample,30gauge)requiredmore
passesthroughthedrawingdiesthandid0gaugewire.Manufacturersofwireformerlyhadproprietarywiregaugesystemsthedevelopmentof
standardizedwiregaugesrationalizedselectionofwireforaparticularpurpose.
TheAWGtablesareforasingle,solid,roundconductor.TheAWGofastrandedwireisdeterminedbythecrosssectionalareaoftheequivalent
solidconductor.Becausetherearealsosmallgapsbetweenthestrands,astrandedwirewillalwayshaveaslightlylargeroveralldiameterthana
solidwirewiththesameAWG.
AWGisalsocommonlyusedtospecifybodypiercingjewelrysizes(especiallysmallersizes),evenwhenthematerialisnotmetallic.[2]
