"PARENTAL ALIENATION"?
Most of us have seen a friend or family
members marriage go bust in a bitter divorce.
Sometimes the couples children are victims
in their parents ongoing conflict long after
the break-up. One parent, often the primary
caregiver, may influence the kids to take sides
and subtly turn them against the other parent.

father, but positive ones of their mother.
Undermining the kids relationship with the

other parent, even unintentionally, damages
childrens emotional and psychological wellbeing and is contrary to the Family Law
Act. This phenomenon is called parental
alienation and may lead to children not
wanting to see or have anything to do with
that other parent. When a childs previously
close relationship with both parents turns
sour with one parent without good reason,
thats a hallmark of parental alienation.
Colin thus asked the court for a custody

reversal order and other orders to help
resolve the problem.
Our BC Supreme Court recently had to

deal with parental alienation. Colin and
Claire (all names changed) had two kids,
Mary and Becky, born in 2000 and 2002.
The couple separated in 2008 and divorced
three years later. Both parents were intelligent
and capable individuals who loved their
children, and they agreed to equal parenting
arrangements. The court subsequently gave
them joint custody and joint guardianship of
the kids and ordered a three-day alternating
parenting schedule, later changed by Colin
and Claire to a five-day alternating schedule.
These arrangements worked well initially,
but over time the kids became increasingly
reluctant to spend time with their dad. One
example: in late 2011 when Claire dropped
Becky off to see Colin, Becky ran back to her
moms car, buckled herself in and refused to
come out for half an hour despite her dads
pleading. By 2013, when Colin was to pick

a product of parental alienation their
negative feelings and rejection of their dad
was significantly out of line with their actual
experience with him. Both Mary and Becky
suffered from emotional and mental health
problems the older girl from depression and
suicidal thoughts, her younger sister from an
anxiety disorder and anger issues.
The focus in such cases is on the best
interests of the children long-term. The court
intervened in an effort to undo the girls
alienation from their dad, to foster their
future relationship with both parents and to
minimize emotional damage.
Colin got sole guardianship, interim
custody and primary residence of the two
girls for the time being, and Claire was to
have no direct or indirect access to them.
Claire, Colin and the children also had to
enroll in a family reunification program for
a year (the programs director would make
regular progress reports to the court).
Parental alienation situations are complex,
and each case requires a unique solution. Its
important you act quickly and get legal and
other help promptly if youre caught up in
such a conflict-ridden situation.

Critical Mass Bike Ride

Local volunteers are again organizing a Critical Mass
Bike Ride coming up in Nelson, and the big bike ride this
year has the theme: People power a clean energy future!
Bikes Not Pipes is taking to the streets at noon in front
of Nelson Civic Theatre on Front Street Saturday, May 2
for the second annual Critical Mass Bike Ride. The ride
will go down Baker Street through Nelson and wind up
with a rally at Lakeside Park shortly after 1 pm.
The volunteer Bikes Not Pipes group is asking everyone to bring signs, noisemakers, loud voices, music and
banners, and dress up to make the ride another great and
exciting event. One of the slogans for the Critical Mass
Ride is Be Radical. VOTE! The federal election is scheduled for October 19, but could come much earlier. We are
encouraging everyone to vote.
Cycling and environmental activists have been holding critical mass bike rides around the world to push for
more attention to healthy, non-fossil fuel transportation, like bikes.

Jumbo Update Spring 2015

Recently I learned the following from my government
contact person. All avalanche experts from government,
the proposed Jumbo Resort and the Ministry of Transportation have submitted their findings to the Environmental
Assessment Office (EAO). The use of outdated avalanche
maps caused the confusion concerning the contentious
relocation of the day lodge foundation.
Th EAO has completed its analysis of the avalanche reports
and is using them to decide if there is a substantial start to
the resort and then possibly give the permanent certificate.
The EAO may release their decision(s) by the end of April.

The Google Science Fair is an annual online science
competition open to students or teams of students aged 13

It is with great sadness
we announce the passing of Sam,
beloved husband, father, grandfather
and great-grandfather.
Sam was a WWII veteran, serving on
the Prince Henry, a troopship involved in
transporting men to the beaches of Normandy for the D-Day invasion. After the
war, Sam trained as an electrician in Calgary and began his career with West Kootenay Power and Light working his way
up to Supervisor for the Kaslo District.
Sam was an involved community member. He was the Chairman of the Kaslo
Hospital Board and was instrumental in
getting the new hospital built in the early 1970s. He served as Alderman on the
Village of Kaslo Council.
Sam had many varied interests. He was a
founding member of the Creston Boxing
Club. He was an avid sherman with his
family and friends. Music was his passion
and he played guitar, mandolin and
saxophone. He enjoyed playing at dances
and family gatherings. Sam loved all
sports, especially Major League Baseball.
He valued his family, friendship, hard
work, education and being a responsible
citizen and community member. His
dream of retiring in the beautiful Creston
Valley came true in 1985 and he enjoyed
many years of raising Herefords and
having coffee every morning with his
buddies at the local coffee shop.
Sam was predeceased by his son Gregory; parents Antonio and Antonietta;
siblings Rosie, Frank, Ralph, Robert,
Victor, Louie and Guido; in-laws Titus,
Aldina, Joyce, Agnes, Fred and Verna.
His grandchildren will miss their cool
grandpa. Much love from Derek (Jenn),
James (Leah), Kathleen (Leigh), Greg
(Katie), Kevin (Shelley), Erika (Alex),
Ryan (Jordi), Lauren (Matt), Heather,
Angele (Drummond), Colette, Sheldon;
and great-grandchildren Chloe, Adam
and Tyson. Sam will be missed by his
sisters Lucy (Art), Olga, Mary (Silvano);
brother Ricky; sisters-in-law Muriel
and Barbara; and his many nieces,
nephews and cousins.

Jeff Faragher holds a Master Degree in Music Performance from McGill University and has pursued

Aldo Parisot and YoYo Ma. Jeff is a prodigious talent
with an innovative spirit. Rather than a career in a major
orchestra, Jeff has chosen a life in the Kootenays where
he is free to explore the full range of musical possibilities.
These include the position of Music Director of The Symphony of the Kootenays.
Alex Nichol spent 25 years as an orchestral musician
with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Halle Orchestra of Manchester, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra before moving to the Okanagan where he and his wife
established Nichol Vineyard Winery. With retirement in
2006, his focus has returned to music-making.

The Old Castle Theatre
Shari Ulrich returns to the Old Castle Theatre for a rare
solo concert on Saturday, May 2. I have loved the Castle
Theatre since the first time I played there with a reunion
tour of the Pied Pumkin shortly after Dean and Lowell
took it over, and am always thrilled to get to return. Castlegar plays a huge part in my musical history.
Shari is a two-time Juno Award winner and inductee
into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, but is probably
best known in the Kootenays as part of the fabled and
beloved Pied Pumkin. Her career as a singer-songwriter
and solo artist was launched in 1978 following touring
North America with the Hometown Band. Her latest
release Everywhere I Go, on Borealis Records, was engineered by her daughter Julia Graff. It is Sharis eighth solo
album and her twenty-first including her work with the
UHF (Ulrich Henderson Forbes), BTU (Bentall, Taylor
Ulrich) and the Bluegrass Supergroup The High Bar Gang.
The album garnered her the 2014 Canadian Folk Music
Award for Songwriter of the Year in Ottawa this winter.
