Thoughts: What did you do? Problems

encountered? Successes? Feelings?
Ideas for next time?

This was my first day training since I arrived

in the academy. It was really tough due to
the fact that we didnt actually do any
technique training nor fighting, the coach
David explained to me that on Saturdays
they usually do physical training to get
people into shape so that they can have
more stamina and resistance when fighting.
So we went ahead and did around 4 cross-fit
WODs which were extremely difficult. We
ran about 5km, you had a time limit to
complete the 5km however when the time
was up we had to move on to the next
activity. People who did not finish the 5km
were punished with 30 bars. Luckily I was in
shape and did manage to complete all of the
WODs in the time frames.

Today we did some ground work and

practiced our grappling in the floor. We
practiced kneeling submissions did a lot of
flexibility and stretching. We had to work out
for approximately 20min before starting the
ground training. 20 min in which we ran and
did one short cross fit WOD that involved a
circuit of 20 bars and 20 burpees followed by
20 crunches. The submissions, which we
practiced, were mainly arm based and neck.
However the fun part of Mondays since Ive
been told is that we can train without the Gi,
in regular cloths. I really like this because it
resembles a real street fight and I found this
day to be really helpful.
Today in difference with yesterday the Sensei
enforced us to practice with a Gi, people
could choose to wear only the top half and
this would not matter since the submissions

we practiced did not involve Ju Jutsu floor

completion. But actual street fights. We also
did a lot of practicing on how to get around
the guard of the opponent, what I mean is
past their legs and to total upper body
control. After the class we could ask the
sensei any questions about anything, which
we did not understand during the class or
continue practicing with a Uke (a training
partner) if we wished. I really enjoy Ju Jutsu, I
think that it helps me to liberate all of my
stress and it is a healthy routine.

I learnt that all Wednesdays are meant for

stand up fight. So we basically warmed up
for 20min the same as the other days and
started practicing out stand up fighting
immediately. David, the sensei, mainly
focused on hip movement while performing a
Mawashi, a basic Muay Thai kick which
involved getting all of your upper body
twisting in order to deliver a more powerful
kick. So for about half and hour we were set
on with a partner to practice our upper body
mobility, without actually kicking just
practicing the movement which the kick
involves. Afterwards we were told to put on
our sparing gear and basically spared until
the end of the lesson. I find that this class
has really helped me since most fights
usually start standing and then move on to
the floor, I will continue to practice this kick
on my own until I fully get the hang of it
since it can be a devastating kick when used
in a real fight.

Thursdays we practice standing up

projections. This means projecting your
opponent onto the ground in order to gain
submission. This class was really physical
since you cant actually teach projections
without actually launching the individual to
the floor. I found this one of my favourite
days. We had to practice, after warming up,
landing for about 30 min until the three

people who were new to the class me

included completely got the hang of it. If you
land wrongly during practice you can
severally injure yourself this is why practicing
the landing was necessary. This I have to say
was one of the problems which I
encountered, getting the landing right. Next
Thursday I will make sure that I practice the
landing again until I perfection it.

When I got to the class the sensei asked me

why I would be skipping the Saturday
classes. I had to explain to him it was
because of the CISV training which takes
place Saturday from 9 to 12 in the morning.
Therefore it interferes with my Saturday Ju
Jutsu training. Again like last Monday we
practiced submission techniques without the
Gi, using the individuals own cloths, it was
really interesting because we were taught
different ways in which you can choke
someone form behind and even if they dont
want to give you their neck you can perform
a cross face which will result in even more
effective results than ta regular choke. I got
home really tired since I had also gone to the
Gym prior to my Ju Jutsu training.

Today we did not due any tactical training

and technique training; we focused more on
physical training. We did a whole cross fit
WOD, and the people who managed to finish
were given the remaining time until the end
of the class to practice previously taught
techniques. Like I had mentioned before I
stayed behind after finishing the WOD, which
consisted of 20 bars, 20 weighted front
squats, 60 crunches and 30 push-ups. We
had to repeat that 4 times, to practice my
Mawashi kick. I also really enojoyed the end
because one of the black belts helped me
and taught me new techniques which the
sensei had not got to yet in this point of the
year.

We switched it up this week, because
yesterday we did not do ground work we

decided to work on ground technique today.

We mainly focused on getting the guillotine
choke to the neck correctly done form many
different positions. However the one, which I
found most challenging, was form the sitting
position due to the fact that I did not have
much mobility, but in the end I managed to
get it correct. The one which I found more
easy was when the attacker was coming in to
tackle me and they placed their head
through the outside of my body it was easy
to get the choke in place and execute the
guillotine perfectly. A big problem, which I
faced today, was the fact that I forgot my Gi
at my house so I couldnt get all of the
competitive Ju Jutsu chokes involving my Gis
help, like in the sitting guillotine.

We carried on with stand up fighting but in

difference to the other weeks we did more
handwork. We mainly practiced evading
punches and throwing one counter punch.
The technique was complicated because the
timing was crucial and during the first 20min
of training I could not get the right way round
so I did struggle. However with more practice
I did manage to evade punched better than
before. I think that next time I will wear
heavier gloves because this would also help
me to get the counter punch quicker.
This is the last week of the month which I will
be attending Ju Jutsu so I found myself really
sad in the beginning of this class. We got on
pretty quickly with the class by only doing a
10min warm up and then to tackling
techniques. We worked on leg work while
tackling someone, I learnt that the best way
to avoid a choke while going in for a tackle is
to place your chest against the other persons
chest, besides this also gave me more thrust
and power to knock my Uke off his feet. After
practicing this tackling techniques the sensei
gave us 2min rounds until the end of the
class to just fight and spar, each tackle
counted as a win and each guard pass
counted as a win also. We were not allowed
to do submission until the final 10min of the

class. For this we were allowed to do

anything in order to obtain a win and the
only way we could win was by making the
other person tap out. This to me was one of
the best classes due to the fact that we were
allowed to put in practice all of the
techniques which we had previously learnt
and apply out own personal fighting
knowledge.
This class we practiced how to execute
different Kimura techniques, and one really
complicated one involving the use of leg and
shoulder. I think that the guidance of the
black belts and the sensei was crucial in this
class because the last shoulder submission
could have been really dangerous since if
you applied a little bit of pressure it would
have easily dislocated the shoulder or
caused a major injury. I spoke to a girl who
had been training for about a year and she
told me that one time they accidentally
broke her hand, in my personal opinion this
sort of things will always happen in close
contact martial arts. And I think that it forms
part of the training experience.
We practiced projections today and mainly
projections involving using the other persons
arm a lever. I think that this was a really
important class because they also taught us
how to counter a projection move. So the
first half of the class involved in actually
doing the projection to the Uke and the other
half involved in countering the projection and
leading into a choke. I had to leave early this
class to I only got to counter the projection
about 4 times before I had to leave. I had to
leave early because I had to study for an
exam.

For the final day of the month the sensei

made us warm up and practice stand up
fighting, we only warmed up for about 10min
and then starts paring with the previously
taught techniques. It was a really fun day
however I did receive some good punches

Meeting

Thoughts: What did you do?

Problems encountered? Successes?
Feelings? Ideas for next time?

Today I went to the CISV program

presentation, I went there with the aim
of inscribing myself into the seminar
program which will take place sometime
I the summer of 2015. I was successful I
doing this and managed to also get
introduced into a program aimed at
teenager called the Junior Branch I
found this really interesting and also
decided to place myself in the board of
directors of the JB. I am really anxious to
start the JB meetings.

Today was the first JB board of directors

meeting, what I found most interesting
with this was the fact that the people
involved in the board of directors are
usually between 14 and 21 years of age.
Therefore I really felt that the power was
delegated towards us, and really liked
the idea. The board of director consists
in two NJRS, which are the head of the JB
and then the rest of the JB board of
directors. To make things clear one of
the NJRS Diego Santos, which also
happens to be a classmate of mine,
mentioned that too many people had
subscribed themselves into the board of

directors and therefore the people who

initially do not attend the meetings will
be kicked out. So I made sure that I
would attend every board of directors
meetings.

Directive
Board of
the JB
Meeting

This meeting was basically a follow up

from the previous meeting. We has
planned more JB activities and we also
got more explanation on the JB calendar
for the year, there was mention of the
Andinos 2015 camp taking place in
Ecuador however the place it would be
taking place in was not decided yet. We
also socialized between the members of
the JB more and played name games to
memorize the name of each JBer. In the
end though the terms of the JB and also
some key CISV terms were explained
with great detail and I managed to
understand more clearly the concepts.

Whole JB

integration
activities.

For this meeting it was not only the

board of directors but the whole JB
which took part in the activity planned.
The event took place in Pula Martinezs
house which happened to be in my
residential estate so I only had to walk a
couple of streets to get to her house.
There we made socializing activities
which we had previously planned with
the board od directors and also made
sure that each JBer knew how the JB
works and all of the different functions
which the JB has. We as the board of
directors managed to solidify the bond
between JB members with integration
activities such as the news paper dance
off or simple discussions. It was a
chance for us as board of directors to
show leadership, and it was also a
chance for us to get the message out to
other people about upcoming JB events.

Today in this meeting we discussed

about how other JBs in the Andinos
region have managed to create a
product, which sold and helped them to
get funds. This is why in this meeting we
discussed how we could raise funds and
therefore the two NJRs presented to us
the idea of making hoodies for the JB
and we all agreed that it was a good
idea. We were then divided into planning
groups and then we set forth to decide
on designs for the hoodies. We had to
make different hoodies, one for CISV
Ecuador, on the whole JB and another
for the board of directors of the JB. So
we basically decided in our groups upon
a design and then presented this design
to the NJRs. At the end we were again
presented with the Andinos camp and
were asked to confirm, I personally did
confirm my assistance because I had
previously discussed it with my mom.
Today I had to wake up early because
we had to meet in a church I Quito in
order to get to the place were we would
be doing social work. When we got there
we waited for all of the people who were
going to help out to get to the church
and then departed to Sambisa were the
Agasajo Navideo was going to take
place. I felt that the activity was a real
success because of the fact that we
managed to bring happiness to many
people in need we helped out all day
and with the help of extreme response
we were able to create a very successful
event in which more than 300 people in
need were attended to.

The
Andinos
Camp

For fiestas de Quito in December me

and the rest of the directive board of the
JB organized an activity in the house of
one of our members called Julia
Madrian, her house we planned an
activity in which the whole JB was
invited and they could bring in anyone
who they wanted. It was an
championship involving an Ecuadorian
traditional activity called 40, this game
lasted for about 5 hours since there
were many people inscribed in the
tournament. We managed to strengthen
the bonds between the people of the JB
with this activity and also got the first
picture of the whole Junior Branch of
Ecuador.
In this workshop we went to Juan David
Uribes house in Pifo, we organized
ourselves in order to first go to the
training site in school Terranova and
attend the regular CISV training
program. After the training we went to
the house in Pifo and the pre-Andinos
workshop started. In the workshop we
worked mainly with the theme by which
the Andinos camp was going to base
itself which was conflict resolution. We
did many activities involving conflict
resolution and discussions between the
JB members. I felt that it was a major
success due to the fact that most of the
JB members who would be attending
Andinos attended the camp and we
really got a feel for what the Andinos
camp was really going to be like and the
sort of activities which we were going to
in the Andinos camp. I think that now
that I have taken part in this particular
workshop I am more prepared for what
is to come in the Andinos camp.
The Andinos camp to me was one of the
most wonderful experiences in my time
in the JB. It was a get together of Peru,
Ecuador and Colombia. For the first day
of the Camp we mainly got to know one
another and made many name games in

which the names of the people we did

not know were learnt. Then we got onto
some activities like lifeboat just to name
one. It was a really interesting day the
rules of the camp were presented to us
and the main things, which were we
hoped to achieve in the camp, were
made clear. Besides from this we were
assigned rooms and were presented
with the schedule of all the activities,
which were going to take place. I really
enjoyed the ay in which e were
presented with the rules because of the
fact that the rules in the camp were
delegated to some extent onto us. We
were the ones who decided upon some
of the major rules. During the second
day we started off by doing the activities
which the NJRs had planned previously
and the idea of the regional projects was
presented to us, we were split up into
groups and therefore we set out to plan
various ideas for the regional projects. It
was extremely interesting. In the third
day only the people who truly wanted to
take part in the planning out of the
regional projects were assigned a time
to work and plan on them. I felt like the
Andinos camp was extremely useful in
my understanding of the Junior Branch
and also in fully understanding the
structure of the Junior Branch and how
this works in conjunction with CISV.
Besides this I felt like the regional
projects, which were proposed, were
good and all of them had the
possibilities of having good outcomes
and positive impact on the communities
of all three countries. I personally will be
signing myself up for the next Andinos
camp, which will take place in lima,
Peru.
