HU ISEM 500

PROJECT 2: Free For All (100 Points)

Voice Annotated Discussion of Project 2, Duration = 15 Minutes, URL for Viewing:

http://harrisburgu.adobeconnect.com/p5cj1re0qa8/

This project will give you an opportunity to further extend your planning project by
investigating tools and conducting research on topics of your interest.
PART A: Hands-On Experiments with Computer Aided Planning Tools and Self
Assessment (50 Points): This team project will give you some insights into the IT
planning and also the overall topic of AI and Expert Systems.

Self Assessment (25 Points): Some interesting computer aided IT planning tools
are becoming commercially available. You will be given complete access to one
computer aided planning tool (PISA) that you will use to Self Assess your plan
developed in Project1. You need to find and use 2-4 additional computer aided IT
Planning tools that can be used to develop the IT plan that you have developed by
hand in Project 1.The number of tools depend on the size of team (for example,
team of 3 will use PISA plus 2 others). Try searching for IT planning tools or
technology planning tools, enterprise planning tools, etc. Compare, contrast and
evaluate these tools by comparing it against PISA. Your deliverable is a self
assessment form that will be given to you.
Design of a Simple Planner (25 Points). Use your knowledge and experience of
IT planning tools to design a simple computer aided planning tool that can be
used by a small company to plan its IT systems (applications, networks,
databases. whatever). The idea is to use your AI and Expert systems knowledge
to design (not implement) a simple expert system for some aspect(s) of Project1.
Your deliverable is a design reprsesnted as a Powerpoint game.(See Attachment A
for details).

PART B: Open Ended Investigation (50 Points): You can choose, individually or as a
loosely coupled team, an area of further investigation and interest. You can either build
a prototype that gives some insights into an applied project or develop a research
presentation on a selected topic (a team may do mixture). You have two major choices:
Build a simple prototype
Research a topic of your interest

Build a Simple Prototype: This should be related to your CPT assignment and may
become your capstone applied project. It may be:
Implementation of the Planning Tool you developed in Part 2A in HTML5
Design any advisor, e.g., a Travel Advisor or an ISEM Advisor that can help a
student to generate complete his/her studies in 2 years.
Implementation of something completely different such as gamification of a
business process, simulation, or a decision support tool. You can use simple tools
such as Powerpoint for gamification.
Develop a simple website by using MSWord or develop a simple database by
using MS Access (this not open to people with good technical background)
Anything else
Research into a Topic of Your Interest: You may conduct research on any topic discussed
in this course for more insights and may focus on any of the following for a possible
thesis topic (this is just to give you an idea):
Ethical issues and plagiarism (why bother, what type of policies are needed to deal with
it)

IT strategies in modern enterprises

Highlights of major IT announcements in 2014 and their possible impact on
enterprises
Trends in digital and next generation enterprises in any of the business or
government sectors
Trends in ERP systems
ICTD (ICT for developing countries)
Knowledge management applications in different domains
Decision support systems or executive support systems in modern enterprises
Project management (not open to ITPM students) ,
Systems engineering and systems development in modern settings
Globalization
Smart Enterprises
AI for Business
Business Analytics
Emerging technologies (e.g., Google Glass) with possible business and
management implications
Any other topic area within the general scope of this course or your CPT
assignments (make a suggestion)

Your deliverable is a presentation (about 5-10 slides) that should outline the problem you
have studied, why it should be solved and what are the latest solution approaches. Your
slide deck should be gamified with animations and voice annotations that contain the
following information:
Introduction and problem statement

Quick literature survey: what are other developments in this area, how does this
work fit into related work (e.g., what are related aspects of your CPT
assignments)
Your approach, what would you like to do (very high level, 2-3 sentences)
References: You should use refereed articles from the HU library to do a
literature survey of the topic (see attachment B for info about the HU Library).

Extra Credit (30 Points): Primarily intended for students who want to improve their grade.
Develop a business gamification by using powerpoint or HTML5 as a gamification platform. You
can choose any topic within the scope of this course. This 5-6 slide gamification should serve as
an interesting tutorial on a topic that maybe boring. Please use voice, animations and control flow
features of the platform as much as possible.

ATTACHMENT A.: Designing a Simple Expert System for IT Planning

Overview
Your firm wants to develop IT Planning tools that can be used to support and promote the IT
planning consulting services. You are responsible for building a tool (Advisor) that can help a
customer plan a network, computing system, business applications, or a security system.
Specifically, the company wants you to use your knowledge of IT and AI/Expert Systems to
develop only one out of the following possible advisors:
- Advisor for recommending the right business application software
- Advisor for recommending the right local area network (wired) for a site
- Advisor for recommending the right wireless network for a site
- Advisor for recommending the right computing platforms for a site
- Any other advisor of interest to you (e.g., an office planner)
The Advisor is an expert system that suggests a plan based on a set of factors (questions). The
factors may be the company size, type, applications being supported, physical site plan, etc.
Potential users of the Advisor are corporate IT planners trying to build a small company. You
should assume that the users do not know much about technology but know about their business
and are literate about general IT principles. Your deliverable is a 2-3 pages design that shows:
One para on the advisor with a list of key inputs and outputs
One high level flow chart that describes the overall flow of the advisor
Show the knowledgebase and the AI techniques used (e.g., the rules, fuzzy logic, case
based reasoning, etc)
