I.

WARM UP

Aim: to motivate and arise students interest


Procedure: The teacher writes a word on the board and asks the students to think about other
words, related to the buildings, that have in their structure one of the letters of that word. The
students come to the board and solve the crossword.
Means of instructions: - board

Time: 5 minutes

CHECKING HOMEWORK

Aim: to check pupils previous knowledge


The teacher checks the pupils homework and corrects the mistakes if necessary.

INTRODUCING THE NEW LESSON

Aims: - to present the new items


- to encourage students to participate in oral conversations;
Procedure: The teacher asks and writes on the board the following question: Where were
you yesterday? Under it she writes the answer: I was at school. She asks the same question to
different students in the class and writes the sentences on the board. Then she elicits the two
forms of the verb: was/were, when they are used as well as the negative and interrogative
forms.

THE NEW LESSON

Activity 1
Aims: - to practise was/were
- to practise reading
Procedure: The students receive a handout containing different exercises. They solve the
first exercise in which they have to complete the blanks with the correct form of the verb to be
in the past. The students read aloud the complete sentences and the teacher corrects them
where necessary.

Activity 2
Aims: -to practise vocabulary related to buildings
-to practise the verb to be
Procedure: The students work on the second exercise from the handout. They are given two
pictures of the same city. A picture shows the city nowadays and the other one shows the city
50 years ago. The students read the comparison between the old and the new city and they
have to choose the correct form of the verb to be. When they finish they report to the teacher.

Activity 3
Aims: -to check the understanding of the text
Procedure: The students solve exercise 2 from the handout. They have to read the given
statements and based on the description from the first exercise they have to decide which
statements are true and which are false.

Time: 3 minutes
Activity 4
Aims: - to form sentences using the vocabulary
- to practise speaking
Procedure: The teacher initiates a chain question exercise starting from exercise 4. The
teacher asks the first question to a student. S/he answers it and then asks the second question
to another student

Activity 5
Aims: - to form sentences using the vocabulary
- to practise writing
Procedure: The teacher divides the students into groups of four. They receive a handout
containing two pictures of the same city. One picture shows the city nowadays and the other
one in the past. Each pair has to compare the images following the example from the previous
exercise. At the end each group presents their comparison

V.

REINFORCEMENT

Aims: - to check the new items

Procedure: The teacher divides the students into pairs. In each pair one student will ask the
question (A) and the other one will answer (B). The students receive a handout containing
information about famous people who changed the world. They have to ask and answer
questions as in the given example.
A: When was Christopher Columbus born?
B: He was born in 1451
A: Where was he born?
B: He was born in Genoa, Italy.
A: What was his job?
B: He was an explorer.

Procedure: The teacher thanks the pupils for their collaboration; she praises active children
