BUNCHES IN BRAZIL

Spring 1978

BUNCH NEWSLETTER

'v

March, 1978
Faithful Friends:

The Lord has been so good to us. It's hard to believe that we are
back home in Brazil. Just a few days before we left the States I
thought I would be needing surgery and that we would be forced to
spend another six months there. Only a miracle could have improved

the situation in such a short time to the point that the Doctor gave
the go-ahead to return. The many prayers were answered and He
continues to bless us abundantly. How true is His Word, which to
... "Be anxious in nothing; (help thou my unbelief!) but in every
thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests
be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all
understanding shall guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ
Jesus." (Phil. 4:6-7) All Praise to Him!
We want to express our special thanks to all who participated in
the "sending service" at Sea-Tac on New Year's Day. We were really
blessed by that expression of love. We also appreciate what the
Issaquah Family has done to get word out on our needs. The Lord
has blessed us with a lovely home in what we trust will be a very
fruitful part of the city. We pray that it will work out to finance the
house in the States through God's people there. Thank you again for
your prayers and help.
We have been here over two months now and are still getting
settled. Life can be rather complicated at times and we have faced
some difficult tasks already. With God's guidance we know that all
will work together for good.
One of the highlights of our return was the time we spent with
the Christians in Uberlandia. It was so good to see the tremendous
growth that has taken place and to participate in that growth as we
went down to the creek at our property and witnessed six new
births. We all celebrated the Lord's Supper under the trees planted
by the water.
It may be hard to believe, but in the two months in Brazil I
have spent the equivalent of more than five 40-hour work weeks
traveling by bus and car! I pray that it has been spiritually rewarding
for those who have crossed my path. One young man who has done
some work at our house has shown interest in the Scriptures. I have
him doing a study in Mark and pray that his openness will blossom
into a decision to follow Christ.

Pray with us that many will respond to the simple New Testa
ment message as Sandy and I and Bruce and June Colson labor
together in Cuiaba, the Capital of Mato Grosso.

Child Chatter
Hello everybody. How are you doing? Are you fine? I moved
into a pretty house. It's blue. We have a lot of rooms. I'm starting to
read Portuguese. There's this book that I like reading in it. We have
two hammocks. It looks like the States here . . . and a little bit like

it. I live in Cuiaba. And my school is right down the road. It's really
close. I got a pretty teacher. I got some friends. One friend always
runs if I run and she walks if I walk. We always have to wait for each
other. When we walk I start running but she doesn't see me so she
doesn't run. But sometimes she sees me running. We have a tank that
we can swim in. And we have a little place to
put the hammocks and where the hammocks are
we can put water on the floor so we can slide.
We like to swim because of the hot weather.

Our water

Today I was walking home with a coat and it

was hot, do you know why? ... everybody was
looking at me. They thought I was silly because
I had a coat on when it was so hot. My brother
wants to talk. Before my brother talks I want to
say this: I had a loose tooth that I pulled out.

Here comes Corey . .. I fly on a airplane to

Brazil. I ride on a trike. I got a whole gob of
toys. I got a net in my room so no bugs get me. I got a bathroom.
And I got a whole gob of chairstwo chairs. I work today. My
daddie skipped. My daddie get our surprise. Us played three little
pigs. Us color on 'Family Night.' Jesus found us a nice house. Are

you well? Come and see us, good-bye ... I can see you tonight.

Hi, we finally made it, thanks to our Friend Jesus and all of your
many prayers on our behalf. It's nice to be back in Brazil but we do

miss all of you and I want to thank you for your help while on fur

nice not to be living out of suitcases anymore. The Lord hja blessed
us with good health and our spirits are high as we look forward to

Summer 1978

BUNCH NEWSLETTER

Summer, 1978
Dear Friends:

"For other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is
Jesus Christ." I Corinthians 3:11

Sometimes I feel more like a building inspector than a missionary. The

people to whom the Lord has called us... are people of faith. I have never yet
met an atheist in Brazil, though they must exist. I also have yet to discover a

person who doesn't have a spiritual life. All are constructing some kind of
spiritual house. Most of the materials they are using are drawn from the Word of
God. Such strong bricks as "love your neighbor as yourself" and "do not steal,
kill or commit adultry." However, the problem with most of this construction is
that it won't last. The building may even at times be beautiful, since some of
God's best materials went into it. But, it is inevitable that most of these

buildings will collapse. Why? Because care was not taken in selecting the right
foundation.

With many people here I have used the illustration of the race. The

contestants are registered and sAon they are running toward the finish. If
someone comes out of the stands or over the fence and begins to run alongside

of the others, and even completes the race, what will be his reward? Nothing!
... except perhaps being arrested. Those who will be recognized at the end are
those who had their name written down at the start. Jesus is "the Way and the
Truth and the Life." It is only by being "born again" in the power of His Spirit

that we have a right to "run the race" with others who also have their citizenship
in heaven.

We thank you for the prayers that

have helped us to get established and for
me to get through the bout with
pneumonia. A special thanks to the
Colsons who helped us get the word out
oh their ham radio.

,
Just three days out of the hospital
.I'had the privilege of baptizing Maria.
She is a radiant new Christian and

helped greatly during the campaign.

Bruce and June help us keep in touch with

famUy by shortwave radio.

We invited Gary Burreil, fellow

missionary from Goiania and Ulissis, a

fine Brazilian preacher from Pires do

Rio, Goias, to help us "reach out" to the people here. The first four days we ''
preached and showed films m my area then we went to the side near the Colsons.
Several hundred attended the meetings and we each had about 90 people show
enough interest to leave their names and addresses.
Since the rallys, we have been busy following up with other meetings,
home visitation and Bible studies. We both began with meetings in Community
Centers but I have met with real opposition and have not been allowed to use
the center for several weeks. The Lord has provided the use of a home for
regular evangelistic meetings on Saturday nights and we trust that we will soon
see the first fruits of our labor.

I am calling and leading Bible Studies six nights a week and we have moved
"family night" to Thursday afternoon. It opens more possibilities for us as a
family and gives me another night to call. Monday night has been reserved for
.Sandy and we spend quality time together that our witness would be re-enforced
by the example of our Christian family.
Praise God, and thank you for being used of Him to maintain us on" the
field.

A Note from Sandy

We do appreciate you and the many prayers that you have said on our be
half. We gain strength from them and feel encouraged because you care. The
Lord is watching out for us: When Jim developed
a high fever, the Lord provided just the right people
to help me get him to Emergency and into the
hospital which isn't any easy task. The right doctor
was found that had studied in the U.S.A. and im

mediately he had things in control and happened

to be on duty when we arrived at Emergency. God
also provided Maria, my helper, to watch the chil

dren while i stayed with Jim in the hospital and

the children were well taken care of. We were so

thrilled with Maria's decision to be baptized and

she just radiates. Maria has gone back to Araguari

using her to witness to her family and friends. The
Lord provided Ana to take Maria's place and we pray that we can help her find

Jesus in the same beautiful way that Maria found Him. Mistie and Corey grew to
love Maria dearly since she worked for us for
over two years and they, too, miss her. Mistie
has done well her first term back in her Bra
zilian school and she has Winter Vacation the

month of July. The second term will start in

August and goes to December. We're happy
that we have placed her in a Brazilian school
and at the first PTA meeting Jim was elected
Vice-President. Mistie has made many friends
and many of them are coming to our Sunday
School that we started in our home. Every
Sunday morning before the class begins Mistie
and Corey go out in the "highways and by
ways" and call the children in. We've had a
good bunch of children that are very attentive
and we pray that the little seeds that are being
planted in these young lives will germinate and
bring forth fruit. All of the children are from
poor homes and have it pretty rough. Pray that
God will light the "spark" that will never go
out in these "little people" that are BIG in
God's eyes.

About 25 neighbor children attend

Sandy's weekly Sunday School in
our home.

Child Chatter
Hello, everybody. I'm going to talk about stuff here. Maria, she already
went to Araguari. We had "family night" one night. We went riding our bikes

together. I had tests last week. I got

number 8 on my test. We did on the
other next "family night" go to a
movie. It was about "Ben Hur." Oh,
and there was a man there in the

movie, he said he had seven wives.

Do you know what else he said? He
said to Ben Hur not to treat his
horses like animals because the

horses are his children. Oh, we have a

little black doggie. Her name is Cin

derella and she's a girl. She likes
playing with balls and people. She's Mistie, through the Christian symbol in our
fun to play with. Oh, we started Sun gate. She's off to her school you can see in
day School at our house. One day in the distance.
Sunday School there was 25 kids. And one day
came 24. All of them were my friends. At the end
we color and then pray and sing. Corey went on a
trip and I stayed here with daddie. We went on
dates . . . five dates. Now Corey's going to talk ...
Good-bye.

Hi! I got friends. I play, play all day. I got a

little doggie. I go to Uberlandia on the bus. I got a
plug here and when I get hot I turn the fan on.

Fall, 1978
Dear Friend,
'"Thou therefore, my child be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same
commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also." II Tim. 2:1-2
Leadership Training is a key to church growth. However, in order to have any

kind of a training program you first need some dedicated, spirit-filled Christians. At
last writing we had one, and she moved back to her home town where she continues
to be on fire for the Lord. However, that ieft us with zero. We came here to raise up
the body of Christ and to entrust His Word, ".. . to faithful men, who shall be able
to teach others . .We concluded that prayer was the necessary catalyst which we
needed, in abundance, to bathe the work we were doing. We have invited different
supporting churches each month to meet the challenge by praying fervently for the
outreach in Cuiaba. In the just over three months since this began we have seen 34
buried with Christ and raised to newness of life. Praise the Lord for the POWER OF
PRAYER.

Now we are seeking to raise up a few faithful men, to equip them, and show
them their marching orders. God, through prayer, is giving us those men and as you
can see from the photos, they are al
ready leading out, preaching, testifying
and baptizing.
Felizberto, one of the first to accept

Christ, is ^ alcoholic. He has not had a

drink since "June. Re won't even drink
coke. His testimony has had a real im
pact and he baptized his brother-in-law
in August. One of the keys to Feiizberto's rapid spiritual growth has been

the strong commitment of his wife who

Our men are calling with me and each Sunday morning we have a Prayer and
Leadership Training meeting for them. In the afternoon we gather at the river for
baptisms and then meet together in homes for the Lord's Supper and sharing service.
We have Wednesday and Saturday night meetings which are evangelistic as well as
edifying. Sandy has started regular women's meetings and at her first gathering a
young couple (she, the daughter of one of our Christian women) found Jesus and
were baptized as a wonderful conclusion to that first encounter.

In the recent Evangelistic Rally, Raimundo took the lead as Evangelist and

Felizberto and others shared in prayer and personal testimonies. Your prayers again
were central. Satan does not like what's happening and we have seen how he works

to destroy our witness. Thursday the rally got started with a fair group of a couple
hundred. Friday we were rained out. Saturday about everything possible went
wrong, with the sound system completely failing several times. Sunday night when
we arrived to set up there was no electricity. We confronted Satan with prayer and
continued to set up by car lights . . . with two or three minutes to go the power
returned and we had a fantastic meeting. Fourteen adults gave their names and five
have been baptized as a result, with more to come. After the meeting we thanked
God for the victory and moments later the lights went out again. They had never
flickered during the film of Christ's death and victory over the grave and the power
ful preaching and testimonies. Your prayers have influence even here on the bottom
half of the world. The Lord IS raising up leaders for His church in the interior of
Brazil.

A Note from Sandy

The Lord is blessing the whole bunch of us because you ^
care and we feel the results of your faithful praying for
our family and work. It's exciting to see the hand of
God moving even in the little things . . . Corey and
Mistie are without colds, worms and lice for the time
being! The "Birthday Season" Is upon us and Corey
will turn five, Oct. 25 and Mistie, eight, Nov. 10. It's
amazing how time flies because Corey was only three and a half months and Mistie
three years old when we arrived in this beautiful country. I feel that our adventures
here have brought our children closer to Jesus because they have seen Him work in

our church work and He's guiding my
hand in working with the children and

^women. I've stopped my Sunday

School in my home for the time being
so that I can help the new Christian
women start two new S.S. in the area

where we are working which is a

couple of miles from our home. The

first S.S. is going great and the chil

have shown such enthusiasm in teach

to leave them and help train others

ing these children and that the children will
continue to be as eager for God's Word as

they've been since the beginning. Our women's

meetings have been well attended with the
women using what they learn to share their
faith with others. Already we have two ladies
that would like to follow Jesus and be baptized

but they're holding back a little, waiting for

their husbands to make the same decision with
them. We've seen that it is much better for both
husband and wife to be immersed at the same

time for a stronger impact in the family and for

their witness to others. We've already seen that
where we have a couple united in Christ... we
seem to have faster spiritual growth in the fam
ily and a better witness to their relatives and

neighbors which opens up new avenues for

Evangelism. In closing I would like to ask for

your help: the families that we are working

Hi, I had a good birthday. It was fun. I went to the airport with daddie for a
date. I got a lot of birthday cards and I like them. Now I'm going to talk about my
school: I passed at my school because I got good grades ... so now I'm just here
playing. We took a trip to Uberlandia again and we went by bus and daddie got sick
there. We had Thanksgiving there and we had a lot of food to eat but there was a
lot of flies there, too. Now I'm going to talk about Christmas: We've got three

boxes with decorations in them and we're going

to put them up. Daddie's going to try and find
a tree. We're going to make cookies and stuff to
give to the people that daddie preaches to, the
Christians.

We

have Christmas because it is

Jesus' birthday and it's good to be nice to other

people. Bye-bye and have a good Christmas.
Now Corey is going to talk ... I got a birthday
and I went on a date. You know something, I

the restaurant. I liked all the birthday cards I
got at the Post Office. We already did a paper
Christmas tree and we're going to eat Christmas
dessert and Christmas food and we're going to
put Christmas stuff all over the living-room.
And daddie's going to get a Christmas tree. It's
Jesus' birthday, that's vvhy it's Christmas. Byebye, we going to eat. ' - ^
