WhatisAkshayaTritiya?
TheholytextMadanratnaexplainshowthethirdday(Tritiya)ofthebrighthalfof
Vaishakha acquired its name thus. Lord Krishna saids to O Yudhishthira, the
offeringsmadeandtheoblationsofferedinthesacrificialfire(havan)onthisday
nevergoinvain.HencesageshaveimpartedthenameAkshayTritiyatothisday.
Everythingdoneonthisdayforthesakeofdeitiesandancestorsispermanent.So
AkshayaTritiya,isaHinduandJainholyday,thatfallsonthethirdTithi(Lunar
day) of Bright Half (Shukla Paksha) of the Vedic month of Vaishakha. It is an
auspiciousdayoftheappearance(birthday)ofLordParashuramawhoisthesixth
avatar(incarnation)ofLordKrishna.OnthisdaySrilaVedaVyasadevaspokeand
LordGaneshbegantowriteMahabharata.ThemeaningofthewordAkshayais
infinitethatwhichneverrecedes.InJainandHinducalenders,somedaysofthe
monthareabsentincountingandsomedays(tithiasit'sknowninlunarcalendar)
comeextra,butAkshaytritiyaisonedaywhichisnever"absent"fromthelunar
(moon)calendar.
TheDayofAkshayTritiyaisworshippedandisauspiciousinJainismbecauseitis
saidtohaveestablishedtheveryfirst"aharcharya"amethodologytoprepareand
servefoodtoJainMonks.WeawesomeHindus,traditionallycelebratedthisdayas
theappearancedayofLordParashurama.AccordingtothePuranas,onthisdaythe
TretaYugabeganandtheRiverGanga,descendedtothisplanetfromtheheavens.
The word "Akshaya" means the never diminishing in Sanskrit and the day is
believedtobringgoodluckandsuccess.Ifyouperformcharityonthisdayyouwill
beblessed.Thisdayisconsideredauspiciousforstartingnewventures.Anyventure
initiated on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya continues to grow and bring
prosperity. Hence, new ventures, like starting a business, construction etc. is
initiatedonAkshayaTritiya.
Fasts are kept on this day and pujas are performed. In charity, rice, salt, ghee,
sugar,vegetables,tamarind,fruits,evenclothes,aredonated.Articleswhichgive
protection from the sun like an umbrella, a pair of slippers, etc. should also be
donatedincharityonthisday.LordVishnuisalsoworshippedonthisday.
WhatworkisrecommendedandwhatsprohibitedduringAkshayTritiya?
It is most beneficial for performing meritorious (Punya Karma) deeds such as
recitations (Japa), penance (Tapa), donations (Dana) ritual bathing (Snaana),
sacrifices (Havan), burnt oblations to fire (Homa). But initiation / conducting of
activitieslikewearingsacredthread(Janeo/Upanayanam),endingofafast,house
constructionandenteringthereof,travelingandplantationisprohibitedincertain
communities,whilemostlookforwardtostart/restartrelationships,purchasesand
commitmentsonthisauspiciousday.Tosome,it'sbeneficialforspiritualactivities
andnottheworldlyactivities.
Aspirants are cautioned against using this Tithi blindly for initiating and
conductingalltypesoflifeactivities.AuspiciousnessoftheTithisforspecificactivity

dependsuponsimultaneouspresenceofPanchangamShuddhi,MuhurtYogasand
hostofotherelementsofVedicAstrology.
Startinganewactivityorbuyingvaluablesonthisdayisconsideredtobringluck
and success. The religious merit that is acquired by giving gifts on this day is
considered inexhaustible. Many purchase new gold jewellery on this day. Most
jewellery stores stock new jewellery models for this occasion with "Lakshmi
inscribed" gold coins, diamond jewellery and golden dollars with the pictures of
manyDeities.
SinceIndiansalwaysconsiderthefirstdayofanytimeperiodtobeauspicious,the
scripturesprescriberitualslikeritualisticbathing,donations(daan),etc.onsuch
days. The ritual performed on this day encompasses a bath with sacred water,
ritualistic worship (puja) of Lord Vishnu, chanting, a sacrificial fire (homa),
donationsandofferingstoancestorswateroblations(pitritarpan).Thescriptures
recommendariteforthedeparted(shraddha)withouttheuseofriceballs(pinda)if
feasible,oratleastanofferingofsesameseeds.
Significanceof'AkshayTritiya'
Acombinationofthefrequenciesof'LordBrahma'and'LordVishnu'comefromthe
regionofSupremeDeitiesi.e.Swargaloka(theheavens)toEarthduetowhichthe
'sattvikta(modeofgoodness)'ontheEarthincreasesby10%.Donotemuchofthe
informationbelowismeantforthesubcontinent.
1. Meaning: If the Deity that bestows constant happiness and prosperity is
worshippedonthedayof'AkshayTritiya'withthefeelingofgratitude,theDeity's
graceneverwanes.OneshouldworshiptheDeitywithgratitudeon'AkshayTritiya'
foracquiringconstantgrace.
2.Worshipof'Mrutika(Soil)': Wecanacquire'Dhanya(grains)Lakshmi','Dhana
(wealth)Lakshmi'and'Vaibhav(glory)Lakshmi'dueto'Mrutika(soil)'whoalways
bestowshergrace.Thedayof'AkshayTritiya'isthedayofworshipping'Mrutika'

3. Make a ditch in the soil and sowing: Akshay Tritiya comes just before the
monsooninIndia.Thereisanintimaterelationbetweenthebeginningoftherainy
seasoni.e.'MrigashirshaNakshatra'andthisday.(Intimaterelationmeansaclose
relation with a pure or virtuous purpose.) Fields should be ploughed on the
auspiciousdayof'GudhiPadwa'(whichwason21 st March2015)anditshouldbe
completedby'AkshayTritiya'.(Ploughingincludescleaningoftheploughedfields
andthelayersofsoilmixedwithfertilizersistobeturnedupsidedown.)Ontheday
of 'Akshay Tritiya', the soil in the fields should be worshipped with gratitude.
Thereafter,ditchesshouldbedugandtheseedsshouldbesowninthesechannels.If
thesowingofseedsisstartedontheauspiciousdayof'AkshayTritiya',suchseeds
giveagoodharvestandthereisneverashortageofseedswhichresultsinsplendor.
(Theseedsusedarethegrainskeptasideforfuturesowingaftertakingoutthe
grainsrequiredforone'sconsumption.)Inthepastyears,therainfallusedtobe
quiteheavy.Onceitusedtostartraining,itusedtogetdifficulttomakeditchesin

thewetsoiloffertilelandandstartsowing;therefore,itusedtobeeasiertosow
seeds in the cultivated dry land before the onslaught of the monsoon. On the
auspiciousdayAkshayTritiya,i.e.justbeforethestartofthemonsoon,workrelated
tosowingusedtobecompleted.Nowadays,therainfallislessandsowingisnot
doneasperthescienceleadingtolandsbecominginfertileandthereisdeclineintheyield.)

4.Plantingoftrees:Onecanreceiveanabundantyieldoffruitsiftheditchesinthe
soilaremadeontheauspiciousdayof'AkshayTritiya'.Eventhemedicinalplants
/herbsthataresownontheauspiciousdayofAkshayTritiya,growinabundancei.e.
thereisneverashortageofmedicinalplants.
5. The Importance of worshipping the picture of 'VaibhavLakshmi' with Lord
Vishnu,onthedayof'AkshayTritiya': Onthedayof'AkshayTritiya',aruleror
those who have the responsibility of taking care of the subjects, should perform
'puja',withgratitudeanddevotion,tothepictureof'VaibhavLakshmi'withLord
Vishnuasithelpstomakethesubjectshappyandprosperous.FromtheVedicverse
MataPitaGuruDeva Mother Lakshmi (the Divine energy {shakti} of Lord
Vishnu) is first invited and then Lord Vishnu is invited as the worshipper gets
maximumbenefits.

Thedevotee'sdebtstowardsGodandone'sancestorsarereducedtosomeextent
whenoneperforms'TilTarpan'(offeringofblacksesameseedswithwater)tothe
Deitiesandone'sancestorsonthisday.Blacksesameseedsisasymbolofmodeof
goodnesswhereas'jal(water)'isthesymbolofpure'bhav(spiritualemotion)'.Dueto
thetransmissionofthemodeofgoodnessonthedayofAkshayTritiya,onefeels
positivetotheextentof6070%anddistressfeltduetoone'sancestorsis3040%;
therefore,'TilTarpan'onAkshayTritiyahelpstoreducethedevotee'sdebttowards
Godandone'sancestorstoacertainextent.Whenadevoteeperforms'TilTarpan'
sincerely,honestlyandwith'bhav'(feeling,emotion,mood),theDeitiesandone's
ancestorsbecomeverypleasedwithhim/herandblesshim/herforhis/herspiritual
progressandreducehis/herworldlyproblems.Canafemaleperform'TilTarpan'?
Absolutely.Performinganofferingof'TilTarpan'meanstooffertotheDeitiesthe
'bhav'ofgratitudeandsurrenderintheformofsesame(til).Thereshouldalsobeno
ego(aham)that'IamofferingsomethingtoGod'.Whileoffering'til',havethe'bhav'
that'Godisgettingeverythingdonethru'me'asitwillnotincreasetheegoofa
devoteebutwillincreaseone's'bhav'.Tooffer'TilTarpan'meanstoofferthe'bhav'
ofgratitudeandsurrendertoGodintheformofblacksesameseeds.
HowtoperformtheTilTarpana:FirstinvitetheDeities.Takeacopperorbrass
orofany'sattvik'metalplate(thari).Pourcleanwaterinthisplate.RememberLord
BrahmaandLordVishnuandmentallyinvitethemtocomeinthatplate.Howyou
goaboutdoingthis?MentallypraytoLord'sBrahmaandVishnuIhumblyinvite
youbothtoenterintothisplate.Thereafter,havethe'bhav'thattheDeitieshave
cometherethroughtheir'Subtle'form.Hold'til'inyourrighthandwiththe'bhav'
thatthevibrationsofLord'sVishnuandBrahmaarethereintheKalaTil(Black
sesameseeds).Thenhavethe'bhav'thatanofferingofblacksesameseedsisoffered
atthefeetofboththeDeities.FirstastheTilareoffered(atthefeetoftheDeities

whohavearrivedinasubtleform),thevibrationsofthemodeofgoodnessin'Til'
transmittedfromtheDeitiesisabsorbedtoagreatextentandwiththeofferingof
water,'bhav'ofthepersonmakingsuchanofferinggetsawakened.Asones'bhav'is
awakened,oneisabletoimbibemorevibrationsofthemodeofgoodnesswhichhas
beenabsorbedinthe'Til'fromtheDeities.ThisshowsthatGodisyearningforthe
'bhav'ofadevotee.When'bhav'andegoareofferedtoGod,Hegenerouslybestows
Hisgraceuponthedevotee.
Thevibrationsofthemodeofgoodnesscomesfromthehigher'lokas(regions)'onthe
dayofAkshayTritiya.Many'jivas'(being/soulofalivingorganism)comenearthe
Earth from 'Bhuvaloka' (Bhuvarloka is a planetary system above the earth. It
occupiesthespacebetweentheearthandthesun.Itisinhabitedbymunis(sages)
andsiddhas{perfectedbeings})toimbibethatmodeofgoodnessvibrations.Mostof
these'jivas'areancestorsofhumanbeings.AstheancestorscomeneartheEarth,it
ispossiblethatahumanbeingcanhavemoredistressonthedayof'AkshayTritiya'.
A human being is indebted to his/her ancestors. Shastras expects that a human
beingshouldtrytorepaythisdebt;therefore,'TilTarpan'hastobeofferedonthe
dayofAkshayTritiyasothattheancestors'journeyafterdeathbecomessmooth.
Using black sesame seeds in the ritual means invoking the deceased ancestors
(Pitars)trappedinthe Martyaloka(Hell) withthehelpofthe rajatama (modeof
passion)frequenciesemittedfromtheblacksesameseeds.Therecitationofmantras
intheprayerhasaneffectontheblacksesameseeds.Thedormantrajatama(mode
ofpassion)energyinblacksesameseedsisawakenedasaresultofthesoundenergy
generatedbytherecitationofaparticularmantra.Thisenergyisemittedintothe
environmentinthespiral(vortex)formofrajatama(modeofpassion)vibrations.
At that time, according to the invocation made in the prayer, subtle bodies of
particular Pitars are attracted towards these vibrations and enter Earth's
environment. In this process, with help of the rajatama (mode of passion)
frequenciesemittedfromtheblacksesameseeds,reachingtheplaceoftheprayer
ritualbecomeseasierforthesubtlebodiesofPitars.
BlacksesameseedsareshoweredattheplaceoftheprayerbytheYajman(host).
Duetothefrequenciesof Pitars gettingattractedtowardstheblacksesameseeds,
theplaceoftheprayerbecomeschargedwiththePitarfrequencies.
The desire sheath present around the subtle bodies gets activated due to the
frequencies emitted from the black sesame seeds and the Pitars get satiated by

black sesame seeds charged with mantras (Tilodaka) has special spiritual

along with a prayer to Lord Vishnu for making the ancestors' further journey
smooth.
Thevibrationsofthemodeofgoodnessinthesubtlebodiesoftheancestorsincrease
due to 'Til Tarpan' and they get energy to travel to the higher 'loka (region)'.
Distressofahumanbeingduetohis/herancestorsisreducedby5to10%.'Til'has
theabilitytoabsorbthevibrationsofthemodeofgoodnessanddestroy'RajaTama
(modeofpassion)'.Theblackcoveringonthesymbolicsubtlebodiesofancestors,
whohavecometotheplatethroughthesubtle,isremoved,dependingonthe'bhav'
ofthedevoteeperformingthe'TilTarpan'andthevibrationsofthemodeofgoodness
intheirsubtlebodiesincreaseswhichgivethemnecessaryenergytogotothehigher
'loka'.Byoffering'til'toDeities,adevoteefirstgetsthevibrationsofthemodeof
goodness and if his/her 'bhav' is more than 40%, God creates a protective cover
aroundhim/herthroughthesubtlevibrations.Thus,thedevoteedoesnotfaceany
distress while performing 'Til Tarpan'. Distress due to an ancestor faced by a
devoteereducestotheextentof510%by'TilTarpan'.
ImportanceofmakingofferingsonAkshayTritiya
When an offering is made to a deserving person, the benefits one accrues are
spiritualprogressandgoingtothehigherregions.Makingofferingsisavirtuousact
andthustheofferingmadeonAkshayTritiyaneverwanes;infact,oneprocures
morebenefitsoutofanofferingperformedonAkshayTritiyathanmostotherholy
days.Asplentyofvirtuesaregainedbythedevotee,sinscommittedbyoneinone's
previousbirthsarereducedandone'svirtuesareincreased.Thiscanhelpthe'jeeva
(embodiedsoul)'toattaintheheavens;butadevoteejustdon'twanttogotoheaven
bygainingvirtuesasone'sgoalistoattaintheSpiritualWorld(Vaikunthaloka).A
devoteeshould,therefore,makeanofferingtoadeservingperson(SatpaatreDaan).
Here,'satpaatredaan'meanstomakeanofferingtosuchactivitiesinvolvingnot
onlyspiritualpropagationbutalsoactivitiestowardstheprotectionofonesNation
andDharma.
