Dear Editor,

My name is Mary Pruitt, I am a recruit to the mission field in the Philippines. I will
be working with Charles and Roberta Selby in Aparri. I first met the Selbys when i was
a member of the Traveling College of Puget Sound College of the Bible in 1973-74. I was
very impressed by their work and now they have asked me to come and work with them. I
will be leaving in April.

The first year I am there I will be doing the work of Ann Tolliver who will be coming
home on furlough. After that I will be getting more into the specialized area of

Children's work, with the possiblity of an orphanage in a few years.

I am a graduate of of Puget Sound College of the Bible (1975). I was a member of the
Traveling College, now the Traveling Christian College, and traveled for nine months

visiting different mission works in Asia.

I am a member of Central Church of Christ, 1440 S. Oakdale, Medford, Oregon

I have been a member here for 16 years. I became a Christian when I was 13 years old. T
am now 25. In this time I have learned to trust God for everything. I have been inter
ested in missions all of my life and have always wanted to be a missionary. I know the
Lord has a lot of work He wants me to do and I know that I will not be happy unless i am
doing it, no matter where it is.

I don't know how much of this you will want to print in an article.

Use whatever you need.

I am enclosing a brochure also.

I really enjoy getting the Horizons Magazine and reading about the work the Lord is doing
in other-countries and right here at home.

Thank you for this service that we can all

benefit from.

In Christ's service.

Mary Pruitt.

Please send along with this form copies of recommendations from churches which will encourage
other churches to support your missionary work. There are churches which will not allow a
visiting missionary to speak unless a church recommendation can be shown. Since it is impos
sible for any one person to know all Christians in the world, this recommendation by a respon
sible New Testament church is a vital help in persuading others of your worthiness and the value
of your mission. Mission Services stands ready to help you inform HORIZONS readers about
your church recommendations. Since the church is sending you to the mission field (Acts 13:1-3)
and will help provide the necessary needs on the field, naturally the church should share the
credit in your missionary ministry. One of the ways that the church can do this is to share their
conviction regarding your missionary ministry with others. Certainly, their words will help
convince others regarding the worthiness of your work. Please help MISSION SERVICES to
spread your news through HORIZONS, Packets and Slide library by sending your church recom
mendations as soon as possible. Thanks. Send what you have now, and the others later.

Recommendations by Christian Leaders: (List names and addresses here and enclose a copy of
each letter, thanks.)

We are already deeply committed in missions,

having given more than $20,000 to outreach

causes last year as compared to $37,000 spent
locally. Yet we are going to increase our com

mitments to provide Mary's living link to $200

per month and we hope to do even more. We
are asking other congregations to join us in
providing the $200 service link and outgoing
funds, a small investment we believe will bring
a large return.

These people here are really wonderful and I love them, i hope that soon I will be able to

this work.

I would love to be teaching again but right now all I can do is pray &try to

l^rn the language. Yeaterday I had to teach the Ladies Fellowship. I was scared to death

iD^ausg I had never been to one of their meetings, and didn't really know what I was doing.

\
(continued from front page)
We are studying Out of Mark and so ! studied the lesson many, many times and then justpray-

ed that God would lead me in the giving of the lesson.

I stood on the poomise of the Spirit

giving me 'the right words to say. i really felt unprepared because I didn't quite know what
to do. But, praise the Lord, He gave me the right words and relaxed me so t wasn't nervous
and we had a great lesson. He taught, me through the ladies and I was able to teach them. I
just thank God for being in control of that for me. That was my first real experience in
teaching adults. It wasn't half as bad as 1 thought it would be. But only because I turned
it over.to God. By myself. I would never have been able to do it. Thank you Lord foryour ,
help.

Right now, I am living with the Selbys but when Ann leaves on furlough I wlI I move into her
apartment. I- .enjoy being with the Selbys and we have a lot of fun together. They are pood
hard workers for the Lord and the people here really love them. The Christians would do any-,
thing for them and so would some of the non-Christians that they know, because of the love
that shines out from them, the love of God.
I hope that I can have as much of God's love .
for these people as they have. I really feel at.home here, felt like 1 was coming back home
when ! arrived, although I was a little scared and wonderina what I- had gotten myself, into.
But i praise God for removing those doubts and for bringing me to- this place. I do miss all
OT you and think of you often, even though I feel at home here.
I really miss ail my babies

I have not tied any trouble sleeping at night, most of the time there is a nice

breeze. An advantage of living on the coast. But it isn't always blowing, like last night,
and most of the day yesterday. If nothing else I should lose some weight by just sweating

it off. During the Spiritual Retreat and the VBS Clinic I ate most of my meals in t.hp dining

if you have alot of rice to take out some of the salty taste.

We have quite a va

But'they do

have Chinese cabbage and it makes good salad.

It has been wonderful to see my old friends again, that 1 met here on Traveling College.

Many are no longer here but I have seen some because of the Retreat

there are many that I do not know It is wonderfpl.^,to know they are my brothers and sisters

some of the older, men nd women would come and sit in on the

classes.

f%ny have heard the gospel in these three weeks.

This A.M. several more left to teach in other VBS camps. Pray
for them and for more victories. Some are aettina into non-

Christian homes, but Satan is also trying to discourage and

cause trouble. Keep praying. In one place, they had III , but
there were 4 there to teach.

In one barrio where they have no

church, but some students from the high school ahve become Chris
tians and the pricicpal of the school, who is Roman Catholic,
said he wished they could find someone to come and be there all
the time to teach, the Good Mews.

because they are ready!

Pray for a prea char there

The girls stayed in the nome of non-

Christians and had a great influence on them.

I am very happy to announce the arrival of tv/o more chi ldren, bringinn the number of .chi Id-'^"
ren to four. Mlchaells andjiinda's two brothers have joined us, from Nanila, where they "
were 11ving with;anotber. grandmother.

1 praise God that we are able to have them here and

teach them the Word of God. Elmer, age 6 and Ariel, age 10, came to"join us In the middle
of June.' SI nce,.tnen they have really blossomed out, becomlna very act! ve,, .normal children;"
Because they are normal we have the regular problems that come with raising,.children, but '
nothing' that the Lord has not been able to work out. Because these boys had bee.n living'"'
in Manila they are Taoolag, which Is "a d If ferent dial.ect from the one spoken In Aparri'.
This has caused some trouble.in communication, but Praise the Lord, He Is working, that out.

At first Ariel v/as very reluctant to try to learn llocano and English, and v/gs not gnjoylng^
school because of the lack of friends and understanding.

But throuoh prayer and eoCourage-

ment he is now trying very hard to learn and has friends and likes school... Praise the Lord!-

Eimer Is in the kindergarten and is learni.nn quickly the llocano and Enollsh. .1 praise God
for this because it makes it much easier for^ me to communicate with them. 1 praise God'for":h.
His help to me as I am learning to speak and understand llocuno. I still.'have m'uch to ieaf'n'

They are all very sweet and wonderful chl Idren, each an Individual and norma.l . We al I'praJ--'
ised and thanked the Lord as Mjnda gave her life over to Jesus Christ, accepting Him'as her^
Lord and Savior and being buried with Him in Christian vaptism on July 31 .;,,-,Ve,,ha;.b. been

praying for her and were..very happy for the decision she made.
all about, bringing the lost to Jesus Christ.

That is what'this'W6r is

I praise God fo.r my partner, Tessle Masigia,

who is very diligent in teaching the Bible to the children, having a devotion and study time
almost every day. The children love this time-and look forward to it each day. It is also
wonderful to hear them singing praises to God as they do their work or are playfi.hg';H'(Please

continue to pray for Tessie, myself and for the children.

Because of the smailness of the place where we are living, and because it will be some time
yet before we are able to build on the property in Lal-lo, about 10 miles south of Aparri,

we.are trying to purchase or rent the property right next door so that we may expand and
bring in more children. I v/ould ask your prayers for this. Negotiations are going on right
not and it seems that v/e will at least be. able to rent it. There is an old hpuse on. the

property that we may be able to use, or If not we will put up a building, tefnnprary' or per

manent, depending on how we get the property.

know the love of Christ.

Then we will be able, to ehlp more chlld'rWn''

We have been in contact with the Department of Social Service's

Development (welfare) and they are very excited about the plans for a home because there is
none in Cagayan Province & all children must be sent to Manila. Theyare wiTIIng to"help~
us any way then can and have sent people to contact us. Please keep all of this in your
prayers.

It is exciting to see the work of the Lord!

I am kept very busy in the office, keeping the books and talking with the students, evangel
ists and any others that come in. I praise God for this opportunity to be able to share
the Joys and problems of those that comein, praying together and rejoicing together. Some
times I do get very tired of being in the office but the Lord always helps me with that, by
showing the need for me to be here or giving me a briak away.

The first part of Sugust the Traveling Christian College visited here for one week.
time we traveled to the two Christian High Schools.

At that

I prai s God that 1 was able to accom

pany them, this being my first time to visit the schools.

I spoke at the Induction of the

officers at the Northern Isabela Academy and just enjoyed the fellowship at Southern Isa-

bela Academy.

It was a wonderful trip, dlsolte bridges being washed out and getting stuck

in the crddk and having to wait two hours at one of the ferries because a truck was stuck
