Deputy Mayor and Executive City
Councillor of Finance, Economic Affairs
and Vienna Public Utilities

Dear readers,
Vienna is growing. By 2029, its population will have passed the threshold of 2 million. This is welcome news given that population growth
initiates dynamic business development and progress in society. At the
same time, it brings challenges and requires investments in fields like
infrastructure, education, housing or healthcare.
The statistics compiled by Municipal Department 23 are a key resource
for political decision-makers as they identify major developments and
take the necessary political measures.
But the present figures also prove that we are on the right way:
Vienna is the most liveable city in the world. It scores top marks in
international rankings for quality of life, innovative spirit and economic
performance. We will continue to follow our targeted strategy for the
citys development, making sure its excellent services are accessible to
everyone who lives here.
Vienna is attractive for tourists as well. Over 12.7 million overnight
stays in 2013 mark a new record high.
Vienna is productive. The good availability of highly qualified labour, a
high female employment rate of 79.5 %, reliable labour market stability, scientific know-how and above-average labour productivity make
the Austrian capital a particularly attractive business location.
And Vienna stands for transparency. Nowadays it is imperative to
make data generally accessible and understandable. Just as the citys
budget, which is available online at www.offenerhaushalt.at, Vienna
in Figures constitutes a valuable step towards transparent information
management.
I am confident the current issue will make interesting and enjoyable reading.
