Sample Letter of DirectionRemediation Letter

Date:
Dear:
I wish to confirm our recent conversation during which I told you that it was with
considerable reluctance that I recommended you for re-employment at (Name) School for
the next school year. Because I did recommend your re-employment, the superintendent
in turn recommended your reemployment to the board and your contract has been
renewed.
I have reviewed your teaching performance with you and the deficiencies which
prevented you from being an effective teacher. I also reviewed in our conference my
expectations for your improvement next school year. Your continued employment with
this school system is dependent upon the improvement of your performance as a teacher
in all areas of your responsibilities.
You have been furnished copies of the Georgia Teacher Observation Instrument (GT01)
for each observation I made of your performance, the annual evaluation summary report,
and the professional development plan for your improvement. I also gave you copies of
three memoranda I placed in your file concerning problems involving you during this
school year. These notes are dated ____________, ____________, and ____________.
In our conference two days ago, I pointed out to you that my concern with your teaching
performance began three school years ago and that concern has grown during each of the
following school years.
I will summarize in this letter the problems we discussed in our recent conference. These
problems are:
(1) Instruction. From my observation and the observations of others who have
reviewed your teaching at my direction, it is obvious you do not prepare
sufficiently for the entire class period. Your instruction must improve the
following school year or your contract will not be renewed again. I have pointed
out the significant areas of concern on the GTOIs furnished to you as well as in
the summary evaluation instrument and your professional development plan.
(2) Classroom control and management. When I have been present in your class
to observe your teaching, my presence apparently produced classroom control.
However, when I am not present, you seem to lack any effective control over your
students. It is my impression that you have an excessive number of discipline
problems. I am informed that when I am not present some students are
completely inattentive to your teaching and talk among themselves. On occasions
when I have been in the corridor outside your classroom, I have heard you

virtually shriek at your students. Some students have walked out of your
classroom without consequences. As I have informed you, one parent complained
to me that you have physically grabbed and shaken her child or squeezed his arm.
I am aware that students do not appear to respect you and even have called you
names to your face. At the end of the day, your classroom is in total disarray,
indicating very poor discipline and classroom control.
(3) Teacher/faculty and administration relationships. I find it very difficult to
understand your attitude toward other faculty members. When asked to perform
tasks necessary for the smooth operation of this school, you have been rude and
insulting to other teachers as has been reported to me. Often you fail to carry out
your supervisory duties. You will not accept any constructive criticism or
authority. You do not seem to be open to discussing ways of improving your
performance and responsibilities. When I have discussed with you some of these
problems you have become very defensive and angry and have accused others of
either being the cause of your problems or having similar difficulties.
(4) Other problems. You have ignored simple requests I have made of teachers
such as not eating and drinking in the classroom in front of students when
students are forbidden to do the same. Although this request may seem
unimportant or insignificant to you, it does indicate a difficult attitude and lack of
willingness to serve as an appropriate role model for your students.
I want it perfectly clear that I consider you to be in a probationary status for the balance
of this school year and the following school year. Unless I see substantial improvement
in your performance and attitude, I do not intend to recommend you for re-employment
next year. In fact, if your performance does not begin to improve immediately to the
point that you have become an adequate classroom teacher early next school year, I will
give consideration to recommending that your contract be terminated before the end of
the contract period.
If I did not consider that these problems you have were capable of remediation, I would
not have recommended you for re-employment. It is my intention to assist and direct
you in such a manner that you become an effective classroom teacher. To that end I am
directing you to accomplish certain specific goals. I am directing you to do the
following:

Successfully complete all items contained in the professional development

plan prepared for you and demonstrate you have mastered those areas where
you were observed to be deficient.

Eliminate those deficiencies noted in the evaluation of your general duties and
responsibilities.

Be in your classroom on time and ready to instruct at the beginning of each

period. Instruct or involve your students in learning activities for the entire

period. Maintain order and discipline that are appropriate for the students you
are teaching. Do not permit students to leave your classroom without
permission. Do not permit general conversations among students unrelated to
the subject matter being taught or any other distracting conduct or behavior. I
am not suggesting to you that your classroom should be rigid and dictatorial,
but I am suggesting that the students who are in your classroom should be
attentive to the purpose for which they are present. I do expect the students in
that classroom to be on task and behaving whether or not I am present
observing your teaching. I also expect the room to be reasonably orderly at
the end of the school day.
I expect you to respond positively to constructive criticism and direction. I
consider it to be a breach of your professional ethics when your relationship
with this staff and other faculty has become so adversarial.

I wish to emphasize that I believe you have the capacity to be a competent teacher
with this school system. If I did not think so I would not have recommended for reemployment, although your present teaching performance does not justify my
recommendation. I do not want hard feelings with you as a result of this letter and
my previous conference. Instead, I want you to receive this letter in the spirit in
which I have written it. I seek your improvement and thereby your continued
employment.
I ask that you respond to this letter within five days advising me of your willingness
to cooperate with me in improving your performance as a teacher. You may make
any other comments you wish to make regarding the content of this letter.
Very truly yours,

Principal
