Dear Parents / Carers of children in Year 2,

Welcome back to the last term of Year 2. This term will have a focus upon preparing for and completing
statutory assessments, otherwise known as SATs tests in order to help inform an overall judgement of
your childs attainment at the end of Key Stage 1. To help your children complete these statutory
assessments and also their progress (and therefore overall attainment) we would like every child to read
daily. Children reading purple level or above should have a strong focus on comprehension during their daily
reading session. Most of the school reading books have question and activity ideas at the back to help with
this. We would also be grateful if you would continue to complete the weekly comprehension homework
activities as these provide greater experience of written comprehension questions. A similar emphasis in
the statutory tests is placed on mental maths. Therefore helping your child workout and recall key
mathematical facts at home for a short amount of time, on a regular basis will help them. Although all
children have to be tested, they will be conducted in the normal classroom environment, under normal
classroom conditions.
Our English lessons this term have begun with the poems The Owl and the Pussycat by Edward Lear and
The Further Adventures of the Owl and the Pussycat by Julia Donaldson. The children have tried really
hard to learn one of the poems by heart and will also be attempting to write their own adaptation of the
Julia Donaldson version. We will then be focussing on revision of key features of information texts and
understanding of characters in stories in preparation for writing assessments. The focus in writing will be
around writing correctly punctuated sentences (full stops, exclamation marks, speech marks, commas to
separate adjectives in a list) and using a variety of language in sentences including adjectives to describe
nouns, a variety of conjunctions (and, but, or, because, when, that, if, after, before) and connectives (Then,
Soon, Next, During, Later, After that). Maths lessons will continue to have a focus on mental strategies
and quick recall of multiplication and corresponding division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
Our theme for the first half of term is Wind in the Willows during which we will focus on habitats.
After half term we will begin a new theme called Bucket and Spades in which we will learn about the
seaside and in preparation for this theme we will be visiting Fleetwood museum just before the half term
break.
PSHE will give the opportunity for the children to consider and reflect on a number of issues from trust &
independence to personal organisation
Please make sure all PE kit is named and in school all week.
As previously mentioned, we appreciate the support you give your child at home. We cannot
emphasise enough the importance of regular reading. If your child is reading their books
quickly and you have talked about their book and asked questions, there are other reading
activities you can do in order to continue to promote regular reading. Some include visiting
the school or local library and reading a wider range of text types, online reading including Bug Club and
other websites and reading books from home. The phonics homework will be sent out every Friday, due in
on Wednesday. Manga High will remain the main maths homework.
There will also be a piece of research homework about an animal to support our Wind in the Willows topic
and also help provide additional content for your child to write a piece of information about an animal.
If you have any questions or feel you have a particular expertise or interest in any of the above topics
please let me know. We hope you have found this information useful and please do not hesitate to contact
us if you have any queries.
Mrs Southgate, Mrs Ormerod and Mrs Hocking.
