Students will learn which states make up the western region of the
united states along with their capitals

This activity will be used as a modification to class learning for students with attention disabilities
who need tactile and visual learning. Students will work together in a small group to identify
states located in the west. Identifying states and capitals will begin with a review of states already
learned. Students will review state names, locations and capitals of previously taught regions
before adding new states. Students will use a blank map of the US and a word bank to locate
each new state. Once locating each state correctly at least three times students will add capitals.

Students will be able to correctly identify states in western region of the United States. Students
will be able to identify state location and capital.

Students will be given a blank map of the northeast states and will work together to identify where
each state belongs. After correctly identifying each state students will participate in a memory
game to learn and recall states and there capitals. They will also work on identifying where each
state, previously learned, is located.
Additional materials you will use and how will you use them.
Students will have pens, markers or highlighters, individual blank paper map of the US and a map of
the west and students will take turns using the smartboard to participate in a map matching game
and amemory game to learn state capitals.
Evaluation Strategies
Informal evaluations will be made during this lesson but a larger assessment will be given
throughout and at the end of the unit. Students will be informally asked to fill in blank maps trough
out the unit to progress monitor learning and to help students study. The final assessment will
require students to correctly locate and identify capitals in all fifty states.
