The Reign of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Ill, 1950-67 Extract A: His Majesty's contribution to Islam and the 1959 Constitution. The Sultan turned his attention to providing Brunei with a modern form of government. In 1953 he appointed the Brunei Constitution Advisory Committee (Tujuh Serangkai) to help to prepare the new Constitution. The Constitution of 1959 contained details of how Brunei should be governed. The Sultan remained the supreme executive authority. 5 The Sultan also made an important contribution to Islamic administration. He formed the Department of Religious Affairs in 1954. Extract B: Economic Development and Political Development of 1962. During the period 1950 to 1967, there were many. important events and developments in Brunei. The oil and gas industry developed and prospered. This was Bruttei's most important economic resource. It-helped to provide the funds for 19 developing the’infrastructure and social services which improved the well-being of the people of Brunei, In December 1962 there was a rebellion which was quickly put down.
