INSTRUMENTS
Measurements: Soil Suction, Water
Potential

WP4C- Water Potential Meter- The WP4C can be

used to measure the water potential of any porous
material. It's typically used to analyze soil, soilless
substrates, plant material, and seeds, but it has been
used to measure a variety of unusual things, including
apples, bricks, oil, and insect carapaces.
Hyprop- Generate detailed moisture release curves

on undisturbed soil samples in a standard 250 mL

sample ring, typically within a few days. HYPROP
also determines unsaturated hydraulic conductivity
values for the soil sample.

Vapor Sorption Analyzer- the Vapor Sorption Analyzer

(VSA) brings click and read efficiency to soil water
characteristic curves. In 24 to 48 hours, the VSA
generates up to 200 data points (water potential vs.
water content) for both adsorption and desorption.
The VSA works in the dry (-10 to -475 MPa) range.
You can create automated soil-water characteristic
curves and generate all the correlations with clay
activity, surface area, and swelling potential. With the
new static feature, you can hold humidity constant
and look at the way soil takes up water into its crystal
structure (2:1 clays) and monitor water content
change over time.

To measure water potential, you place the sample in a

round sample cup (4cm in diameter and 1cm tall) and
set the cup in the lexan sample drawer. You slide in
the drawer and turn the knob to seal the chamber.
After about 5 minutes, the WP4C will beep and show
your final water potential reading.

TrueDry CV9- Measures the moisture content of

nine soil samples with just four minutes of hands-on
work time. To start a measurement, place up to 9 soil
samples in TrueDry's rotating tray, close the lid, and
select a program. TrueDry lets you select the drying
temperature and time (or alternatively, allows you to
dry to constant weight). As the sample dries,
TrueDry monitors the weight automatically, cycling
each sample onto a high precision electromagnetic
balance for repeated weight measurements. The
enclosed sample chamber protects the sample from
ambient temperature and humidity effects.

CANOPY
MEASUREMENTS

The Spectral Reflectance Sensors (SRS) are two

band radiometers designed to measure the
Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)
or Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI). The
SRS are designed for long term field
deployment to continually monitor changes in
NDVI or PRI related to canopy growth,
senescence, stress, and productivity.

Manual Dendrometer D1
AccuPAR LP-80
The AccuPAR LP-80 is an easy-to-use,
lightweight, portable, and rugged ceptometer
designed for rapidly quantifying light
transmitted through the canopy and leaf area
index (LAI). All values are measured and
calculated on the fly providing immediate user
feedback. Onboard storage of values recorded
in the field allows for rapid analysis back in the
lab.

The D1 Dendrometer is a simple tool that allows you

to manually measure changes in the circumference of
tree stems over time. The D1 is designed to be
installed, left in place, and periodically visited to
record changes in the circumference resulting from
tree or stem growth.

Automated Dendrometer D6
The D6 is an automated, weatherproof sensor
that provides continuous high-resolution
measurements of tree or branch
circumference. It is designed to be attached to

tree boles or branches and logged continuously

for long term data collection.

this system that helps you nail two tough

components: storage and deep percolation.

Infrared Thermometer
The infrared thermometer monitors surface
temperature by measuring the thermal energy
radiated from any surface within its field of
view. Highly Accurate, Meticulously Calibrated
Has an accuracy of 0.2C when the target
temperature is within 20C of the sensor body
temperature.

irrigation systems rely exclusively on soil moisture

sensors. However, soil moisture sensors can't tell you
how much of the present water is actually available to
plants. This system uses an MPS-2 matric potential
sensor to measure plant available water so you know
