2015 is a very special year for

Alvarez. Our brand will celebrate
its 50th anniversary, a landmark
occasion which not only inspires
us to review our history, but also
to look to the future and imagine
Alvarez in another 50 years.
The acoustic guitar has stood the
test of time. Through ever-changing
music landscapes and cultures, and
developments in digital devices for making
and listening to music, the acoustic
guitar has, in design, remained close if
not exactly the same as when C.F. Martin
invented the x-brace system for steel
string guitars back in the 1850s.
Of course there has been continuous
development in manufacturing as luthiers
and guitar companies try to perfect the
acoustic guitar and its production, but
in overall concept the acoustic guitar
remains the same as it always has been, a
wooden soundbox, with a neck, headstock,
bracings, and strings that has helped
artists express their feelings and influence
ours for decades. It is the songwriters
canvas, the musicians friend, the
instrument you can play softly in the dead
of night or make it shout and scream if you
so desire. So heres to the acoustic guitar in
general, as well as Alvarezs 50th birthday.

We have some very special instruments

launching this year with our 1965 Series,
and of course the Grateful Dead Series;
its their 50th too. But our standard
line has also improved, with a focus on
the quality of the finish. Its thinner and
shinier, helping to project tone even
further, and make our guitars look
even prettier.

50 YEARS OF
ALVAREZ GUITARS
1965: A YEAR OF TRIUMPHS AND MILESTONES.
ALVAREZ ARTISTS
The year the Beatles released their groundbreaking Rubber Soul

album, the year that The Sound of Music released in theaters
and became an instant classic, and the year that saw Edward
Higgins White become the first American to walk in space.
Over the last 50 years, Alvarez and Alvarez Yairi guitars have
been played by artists of every genre, from folk and blues to
Rock and Heavy Metal. Bob Weir and the late Jerry Garcia of
the Grateful Dead each have signature models, and Bobs WY1
has become one of the most popular handcrafted guitars in the
world, played regularly by Joe Bonamassa and Ani DiFranco.
And it was a year of conflict and tragedies. Martin Luther King

led protests throughout the south to champion the civil rights
movement. The first US combat troops arrived in Vietnam. We
lost Winston Churchill and TS Elliot.
ST. LOUIS, 1965: A YEAR OF INSPIRATION.

Frank Sinatra had just played the Peabody Opera House. The
magnificent St Louis Arch had just been completed. And in a
quiet part of the city, a company called St. Louis Music had a
vision. A vision for a line of guitars that could reach out to the
musical revolution sweeping the world and inspire a generation
of new players.
This new line of instruments would become Alvarez Guitars.
A PARTNERSHIP
Just a few years later, Alvarez would form a momentous alliance that
would take every aspect of the brand to new heights. Thenowner of
Alvarez, Gene Kornblum, fused his mastery of marketing and guitar
knowledge with the transcendent luthiery of Kazuo Yairi, of Kani,
Japan. This union created a culture of constant improvement at
Alvarez, one that still exists today.
Its a partnership that has born many successes over the years.
St. Louis Musics ability to put fine instruments in the hands
of the worlds greatest players has made Alvarez a globally
recognized brand, while the craftsmanship and design of Kazuo
Yairi has defined the brands quality for many years. Until his
passing in March of 2014, Kazuo would personally sign the neck
block of his Alvarez-Yairi instruments. His son now carries on
that tradition, and the Master Luthiers taught by Kazuo and
his contemporaries continue building amazing guitars. We will
miss Mr. Yairi greatly. He was a driven and charismatic leader
and in this, our 50 anniversary year, we remember him with
fond memories and great thanks.
Other artists that have brought Alvarez to their stages are Paul
McCartney, U2s Bono, David Crosby, Johnny and June Carter
Cash, and Carlos Santana.
And while those amazing talents humble us by choosing our
guitars, were also driven by the thousands of everyday players
that pick an Alvarez for their unique musical experimentation
and growth.
ALVAREZ BEYOND
For Alvarez, the years to come are a promise of further
innovation and excellence. Our design team are constantly
honing the specs of our guitars, committed to delivering
instruments that dont only look and sound great, but also offer
a wide variety to consumers, and at a very accessible cost. In the
last few years alone, the brand has won many awards around
the world and continues to garner recognition as a leader and
pioneer in the industry.
The 50th Anniversary of the brand will see the release of
some stunning commemorative models, each featuring tightly
grained, seasoned woods, hand cut Abalone purfling, Acacia
back and sides and our wonderful Shadowburst finish over the
shimmering Sitka.
This exciting new range can be found on page 30.
Looking ahead, into the next half century, it will be a time filled
with new music and artists. Alvarez has always been, and
will continue to be devoted to those creators and players, and
providing them the finest instruments we can craft.

The 650 uses B-BANDs patented electret film technology replacing the Piezo
materials found in other acoustic guitar pickups. A Piezo pickup tends to
import a sound of its own into the electrified tone, which is often described
as quacky or synthetic You dont get this with B-BAND technology which
works in much the same way as a condenser microphone, allowing for
accurate reproduction of the instruments true voice.
The SYS650 is a dual pick-up system incorporating one UST (under saddle
transducer) and an AST (acoustic soundboard transducer) placed under the
soundboard, the amplified sound can be blended between the two pickups
to find subtle changes in response for lead, picking or rhythm work.

The SYS650 has a fully chromatic, precision tuner with backlit LCD screen;
3-bands of rotary EQ and a notch filter that helps eliminate feedback while
minimizing degradation of the overall sound.

achieve accurate reproduction. This is a single pick up system with an added
feature on the console for Presence to help you find the sound you need
when playing live.
SYS550 also has a 3-band EQ and backlit chromatic tuner, notch and
master volume.

Every single Alvarez instrument,

irrespective of its price point is
inspected and adjusted in St. Louis.
We know how important it is for a guitar
to not just sound right, but to feel right too
and play perfectly straight out of the box.
Alvarez instruments go through an
advanced set-up process that includes
a full fretboard level and dress, filing of
nut slots and multiple neck/truss rod
adjustments. Every fretboard is oiled,
every note is tested for clarity and bridge
saddle measurements are taken to make
sure your guitar feels and plays just right.

50 YEARS OF
THE GRATEFUL DEAD

A freshly formed band of rock and blues musicians were looking

for a new name. Guitarist Jerry Garcia happened upon the littleknown phrase grateful dead in a dictionary, a preciously brief
moment, but one that would influence entire generations of
rock and roll fans.
Grateful Dead enthusiasts will love the official artwork, applied

to the cedar tops by an innovative screen printing process, and
all guitarists will appreciate the fine construction, playability
and tone of these instruments.
The Grateful Dead went on to have one of the most storied

careers in all of rock and roll. They produced dozens of albums
and played thousands of shows around the globe, supported by
a legendary following of loyal fans that continue to celebrate the
band to this day. In 1994, the Grateful Dead were inducted into
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

To commemorate the bands

50th Anniversary, Alvarez is proud
to present the Grateful Dead Series,
limited edition, signature guitars.

Each model features a solid A grade western red cedar top, screen
printed under a flawless satin finish. Other appointments include
custom mother of pearl inlays, a rosewood fingerboard and bilevel bridge and 12th fret lightning bolt inlay. Both models are
constructed using the Alvarez FST2M hand finished, forward shifted,
scalloped bracing system for optimal performance and response.
Each Grateful Dead Series guitar is very slightly unique due to
the screen printing process developed to apply the artwork.
This process allows the color and grain pattern of each top to
contribute towards the aesthetics. Since every piece of wood is
unique then the look of each guitar is, too. The printing process
also gives the Grateful Dead series a cool vintage vibe and the
color of the solid western red cedar top is allowed to be part of
the artwork, again adding individuality, making each one of these
guitars a unique, and special instrument.

images, the designs have been
applied using a custom screen
printing process. Thanks to Mother
Nature, each guitar top varies slightly
in both grain and color, making every
Alvarez Grateful Dead guitar a unique
instrument.
SIGNATURE 12th FRET INLAY

The Lightning Bolt is a Grateful
Dead icon, and a design used on Bob
Weirs WY1. The Inlay is made from
premium Mother of Pearl.

Like the artwork applied to the top,
the guitar itself is meant to be full
of surprises. We could not resist adding
