hello!

When we started this long journey of degree project we were told to choose something that we felt strongly about, and I couldnt help but thinking about these two
women my mother and grandmother, who have been really influential on my life

And when thinking about them, I thought about how they have this incredible skill that Ive just envied for most of my life

thats
me

Now, probably like most of you, I was taught cursive in the 3rd grade. (click, thats me, all toothy and in the front)

With the huge increase in technology when i was a kid, cursive wasnt a priority for my teacher

While its not been a priority in most schools across the country

cursive is still
in these states,
yay!

(click)

cursive is still specifically included in the standards of these 25 states, but still thats 25 states that have dropped it

without an emphasis on handwriting, adults end up with writing like this (Sorry Nick)

33% of adults cant even read their own writing

But most of us by this age have forgotten how to write in cursive.

Decline of cursive has started with this generation and is only getting worse

But its not everyone,

Survey has shown that 25% of people prefer to write in cursive

*out of 483 people (in case someone asks)

There are positives to learning cursive

cursive stimulates brain synchrony

coordinates the right side of the brain (visual)

with the left side of the brain (verbal or linear)

develops fine motor skills

How can design display and increase

cursives relevancy in modern day?

All that background brings me to my question, which is

How can design display and increase cursives relevancy in modern day?

Project Objectives

within this larger picture it comes down to two objectives

Project Objectives
educate people on the merits of using cursive

the first being to educate people on the positives of cursive

Project Objectives
educate people on the merits of using cursive
to encourage people to be active in using
cursive in their daily lives

and the second being to encourage to use cursive in their daily lives

When I started this project this was my game plan

it came out to 4 sections that looped into each other

loops &
curves
cursives connection
to modern day

and so it then became Loops and Curves

loops+curves are what make up cursive

Loops&Curves is made up of these three things

educational book

practice journal

instagram account

1st: Education Book

This book covers a variety of sections on dierent cursive related topics

Cursive has an impact of much of our memories. Grandmas recipe cards are frequently written in cursive and recipes are a way to recreate a moment with the people we
love

Cursive has also shaped our national history. many of our historical documents are done in cursive and

with its loss, whole generations wont be able to read them

This book also covers the current state of aairs with cursive in our countrys educational system

And this book ends with a message to keep practicing cursiveleading into my next book

2nd: Practice Journal!

Studies have shown that Millenials like to be included, they like to participate

This book is meant to have a fun, humorous tone with prompt that will encourage practice

It should be something that the user can really own by the end of it

and a way to have fun while they practice

And after practicing, is there really anything that my age group loves more than sharing their accomplishments with the world? The Hashtag!

3rd: Social Media

reach a larger audience and a way to get people to start sharing

would have prompts similar to journal, enticing imagery

regrams are a way to reward people to practice and also a way to show that other people are working and practicing too

Keeping this skill alive has an easy fix, research has shown that 15 minutes/day is enough to learn and improve

and you can incorporate it into any part of your day: grocery lists, notes to self, or sit down and actually practice

keep writing!

pick up a pen, you can be the one that helps save cursive
