Cherokee pitching duo

combines on no-hitter
Senior Quinn Taylor and sophomore Jarrad Delarso
join forces to toss teams first no-hitter since 2009
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
When Cherokee sophomore
Jarrad Delarso stepped onto the
mound for his first varsity baseball appearance at home in the
sixth inning of April 15s game
against Shawnee, he knew he was
walking into a tight, 1-0 game,
and his team was relying on him
to get the finals six outs to close
out the win.
However, what he didnt know

was he needed six outs to close

out the Chiefs first no-hitter
since 2009.
I actually had no idea, he
said.
Delarso came through for
Cherokee, keeping Shawnee hitless and stranding a pair of
baserunners to close out the nohitter and give Cherokee the 1-0
victory.
After finding out about the

However, look at the same 22
individuals not even an hour
later as they left the school, and
one would see only citizens of
the United States of America, albeit smiling ones.
The smiles came as family
and friends watched as those
from different lands came to-

gether for an official naturalization ceremony in which 22 individuals took their oath of allegiance and concluded their journey to becoming U.S. citizens.
The ceremony also served an
instructional purpose, as for the

The Evesham Township Municipal Building, court, library

and Police Department Headquarters all share the same building at 984 Tuckerton Road, but
now residents have yet another
purpose to add to the list of uses
for the complex that of a safe
transaction zone for those looking for a place to safely conduct
transactions with individuals
theyve met online.
Specifically, individuals can
now officially complete such
transactions in the lobby of the
Evesham Township Police Department, according to a recent
police announcement.
The department announced
the designation of its lobby as a

safe transaction zone after the

Evesham Township Council officially adopted the measure at a
recent meeting.
According to police officials,
the police lobby, as well as the entire municipal complex parking
lot, is well-lit and monitored by a
state-of-the-art surveillance system, making the area already well
equipped to help protect citizens
from the robberies, thefts and
scams that have been associated
with online transactions.
One such incident the ETPD
noted in its announcement involved an investigation in Georgia in which a man was charged
in January with the deaths of a
couple who were allegedly lured
to the suspect after he responded
to the couples Craigslist advertisement seeking a Mustang con-

vertible. In that instance the couple, in their 60s, were shot in the
head.
Police
Chief
Christopher
Chew, when originally presenting
the idea to council, said many
other police departments were
adopting similar measures.
A lot of police departments,
what theyre adopting is, making
it the police departments headquarters parking lot, or in the
lobby, so people donthave the
fear of being robbed, assaulted or
taken advantage of, Chew said.
During that presentation,
Chew also noted other incidents
across the county where individuals have been robbed or killed,
and he said the Evesham department had already been receiving

Marc Morgan is Officer of the Month

Evesham Township Police Department has named Patrolman
Marc Morgan as Officer of the
Month for March.
Morgan has been a member of
the Evesham Police Department
for six years. He is being commended for his actions during a
dangerous situation, his proactive enforcement and outstanding
police work.
On March 16, Morgan responded to an apartment fire at 100 Conestoga Drive. Morgan quickly
made sure that all the surrounding apartments had been evacuated then proceeded to the location
of the fire and extinguished it before it had a chance to spread and
cause further property damage.
Morgans quick actions led to the
safety of the residents and mini-

mal property
damage.
On March
22,
Morgan
conducted a
motor vehicle
stop where the
driver
had
only provided
a name and
date of birth
MORGAN
for confirmation of his license.
Morgan reviewed the biographical information that was attributed to the driver and observed several inconsistencies
and believed that the subject was
not providing accurate information. The driver was transported
to police headquarters to contin-

ue his investigation to ascertain

the drivers true identity.
Morgan contacted numerous
state and local police departments, and, through his extensive
investigation he was able to positively identify the subject and determined he was a wanted person
out of Gloucester County for burglary.
Morgans intuition, perseverance and ability to conduct a thorough investigation led to positively identifying the subject and taking a wanted person off the
streets.

in our opinion

Enough regulation already!

We should promote innovation, not curb it

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

Dan McDonough Jr.

ix years ago, in 2009, a man had

a vision of changing the way a
long-standing industry operated. He felt the way the industry was
run wasnt the most efficient, wasnt
the most effective, hadnt adapted with
the times and didnt provide consumers with the best experience at the
best price.
Today, that mans company, Uber, is
well known and is in cities across the
country.
The company uses the person-to-person model to offer taxi-like services to
people through a mobile app. Users
download the app, select a car in their
area they want to use for the ride and
pay for the fare. The fare is listed based
on the trips length, and no cash is
needed while taking the trip.
Uber is catching on like wildfire
from users, who enjoy its accessibility selecting a ride with a few taps on
the phone instead of calling a taxi
company and waiting long times for

the drivers arrival and also its

cheaper price.
Uber also provides jobs to drivers
who are looking to earn extra money.
But this could all come crashing to a
halt, Uber says, if a New Jersey bill is
passed that would put onerous regulations on the company.
The legislation would require ridehailing companies such as Uber to display a Motor Vehicle Commission
marker when drivers are searching for
fares and would require background
checks for drivers, safety inspections
for vehicles and higher insurance regulations.
An Uber spokesman said the company already provides more insurance

than taxi companies do, and said if the

bill is passed, the company might be
forced out of New Jersey, resulting in
the loss of more than 5,000 jobs.
A similar bill in Kansas was struck
down by Gov. Sam Brownbacks veto,
and we couldnt agree more with his
reasoning:
Kansas should be known as a state
that embraces economic growth and
innovation. The jobs created by this
new industry can bring opportunity to
many Kansas families. An open and
free marketplace often results in higher quality products at a more affordable price.
New Jersey, similarly, should be a
state that embraces economic growth
and innovation. Uber found a way to
compete in the transportation market.
Good for them. They should be praised
for that, not overregulated to the point
of extinction.
If taxi companies cant compete, too
bad. Thats called business.

Fourth graders learn

from ceremony, too
FOURTH
Continued from page 1

studying the history of immigration to the United States and the

naturalization process as part of
their social studies curriculum.
As the ceremony got underway,
Keith Dorr, a supervisory immigration services officer from the
Department of Homeland Security, who has children in the district, welcomed the citizens-to-be,
as well as the students.
Dorr explained that, although
some of those present were finally becoming citizens of America,
the country had already been
their home for many years, as immigration precedes naturalization.
I want to make one thing very
clear about these people, none of
them are brand new to this country, Dorr said. Theyve all been
here a very long time, some of
them over 30 years, a couple of
them close to 40 years. This is
their home.
Two such people Dorr spoke of
were Massimo Epifanio and
Rosanna Scotto, a couple from
Italy who moved to America 14
years ago and now live in Evesham where their multiple children attend school.
Epifanio said the two can feel
American now, and had trouble
finding the words to his feelings
on finally becoming a U.S. citizen.
This is something new for us.
Its very, I dont even know how to
express myself, its very exciting, Epifanio said.
Scotto agreed, and said it was a
happy day for the two of them
and their children.

They are very excited, Scotto

said.
They all said congratulations.
Another Evesham family who
officially become citizens at the
ceremony were Alvin and Maribel Pale and their son Stephen, a
Cherokee High School senior,
who originally came to the United
States from the Philippines about
nine years ago.
Stephen said he felt good about
his official status as a United
State citizen and the many opportunities it offered to him as opposed to being merely a resident.
I can vote now, and thats really cool, so Im just waiting for the
next election and Im going to
read up on my politicians and see
who I like and make a vote because I know thats a really big
deal, he said.
Alvin echoed his sons sentiments and described it as a dream
come true to experience all the
great privileges of being an
American citizen compared to
the difficult living conditions of
the Philippines.
Once you become a part of
this country and have the privilege of working and just having
that opportunity to earn and provide for your family, you can see
your kids growing up and maturing in the knowledge and value of
having that privilege, Alvin said.
Maribel said she was touched
by something said by President
Obama in a video the crowd
watched during the ceremony.
He said that this is now our
home, a place that we can honor
and love and serve, and I just love
that feeling that now its not only
that I get to live here but I can
serve this country and love it like
my own, Maribel said.

No-hitter was first since 2009

achievement, Delarso said it was

awesome to be a part of the nohitter in his first home appearance. While the atmosphere was
different from what Delarso experienced in the past, he hasnt experienced any nerves on the
mound.
Pitching is the same throughout, he said. You always want to
attack the hitters.
Delarso came into the no-hitter
after starting pitcher Quinn Taylor kept Shawnees bats quiet for
the first five innings. Taylor allowed four walks, but managed to
get out of a pair of jams early in
the game, striking out six hitters.
The key for Taylor was being
able to keep hitters off balance
with four different pitches. Taylor
mixed up his four-seam fastball,
two-seam fastball, curveball and

changeup to keep Shawnee at bay.

Taylor feels he has improved
greatly from his first appearance
of the season during a spring
break trip to South Carolina,
where he struggled in two innings against Marist (Ill.) High
School.
In my last start in Myrtle
Beach, I shied away from (the
two-seam fastball) and my
changeup, he said. I threw just
a fastball and curveball and didnt
have much success. I said to myself I was going to go out, not be
afraid and use it all.
The downside of the four
walks was Taylors pitch count escalated early. After Taylor threw
72 pitches in the first four innings, head coach Marc Petragnani decided the fifth inning
would be his last one, regardless
of whether the no-hitter was still
intact.
We talked before the fifth inning that it was going to be his
last inning regardless, Petrag-

nani said. Most people didnt

know there was a no-hitter going,
so it wasnt even a debate. It was
too early in the season to pitch
him any further than that.
Even though Delarso and most
of the team didnt realize a no-hitter was still going, Taylor said he
knew all along. However, he was
more concerned about his team
going for the win than trying to
complete the game himself.
We were only up 1-0 and I had
94 pitches. I just wanted to see us
get the W, Taylor said. Im glad
(Jarrad) got that for me.
Petragnani felt the no-hitter
was a testament to Cherokees
strong pitching staff. He said the
teams pitching has been key in
the Chiefs early season wins.
We have a deep staff, he said.
We had a few guys returning and
a couple new guys in Nick Snyder
and Jarrad who have added to it.
They have to keep us in games
right now because our offense
isnt where it needs to be.

requests from residents wishing
to use the facility as a safe place
to conduct their transactions.
We get routine phone calls
from people asking if its OK to
use our facilities to do it safely because we have state-of-the-art surveillance outside, police cars, we
have a great police presence that
people feel comfortable doing the
transaction, Chew said.
However, according to Chew,
while the police department
lobby can be used to conduct
transactions, members of the department will not be involved in
the transactions or be available to
act as witnesses.
Chew said members of the department cannot administer legal
advice regarding the transac-

tions, and they will not be able to

settle any disagreements that
might arise as the transactions
take place.
The announcement also lists
restrictions on certain types of
transactions, baring those involving weapons, drugs or drug paraphernalia.
Police officials ask that any residents who wish to use the police
department lobby in a transaction first contact or notify the departments front desk.
The lobby of the Evesham Police Department is open from 8
a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through
Friday.
Police officials said they also
encourage those residents wishing to use the safe transaction
zone after hours or during Saturdays and Sundays when the lobby
of the department is closed to use
the complexs parking lots, which
are under video surveillance.
