General Instructions:1. All questions are compulsory.
2. There are 10 questions in total. Questions 1 to 4 carry two marks each, questions 5 to 8 carry
three marks each and questions 9 to 10 carry five marks each.

1. What do you mean by permittivity of a medium?
2. Can we ignore the quantization of electric charge? If yes, under what conditions?
3. Two point electric charges of unknown magnitude and sign are placed a distance d apart. The
electric field intensity is zero at a point, not between the charges but on the line joining them.
Write the essential conditions for this to happen.
4. Define the term electric flux. How is it related to electric field intensity? What is its SI unit?
5. Five thousand lines of force enter a certain volume of space and three thousand lines emerge
from it. What is the total charge in coulomb within this volume?
6. Determine the electric potential at the surface of a gold nucleus. The radius is 6.6 x 10 -15 m and
the atomic number
Z = 79. Given charge on a proton = 1.6 x 10 -19 C.
7. How many mega coulombs of positive /negative charge are present in 2.0 mole of neutral
hydrogen (H2) gas.
8. Two pith balls each weighing 10-3 Kg are suspended from the same point by means of silk
threads 0.5 m long. On charging the balls equally, they are found to repel each other to a
distance of 0.2 m. Calculate the charge on each ball.
9. State Gausss theorem. Apply this to calculate the electric field due to an infinite plane sheet of
charge.
10. Define electric potential. Derive an expression for the electric potential at any general point at
distance r from the centre of a dipole or short electric dipole.

What do you mean by electric charge? State its any two properties.
The electrostatic force of repulsion between two positively charged ions carrying equal charges
is 3.7 x 10-9 N, when they are separated by a distance of 5 x 10 -10 m. How many electrons are
missing from each ion?
What are electric field lines? State any two properties of these lines.
A short electric dipole has dipole moment of 4 x 10 -9 Cm. determine the electric potential due to
the dipole at a point distant 0.3 m from centre of the dipole situated (a) on axial line (b) on
equatorial line.
What are conductors and insulators? Why insulators were called dielectrics and conductors nonelectrics?
An early model of an atom considered it to have a positively charged point nucleus of charge up
to radius R. The atom as a whole is neutral. For this model, what is the electric field at a distance
r from the nucleus?
A cylinder is placed in a uniform electric field E with its axis parallel to the field. Show that the
total electric flux through the cylinder is zero.
Three charges, each equal to q are placed at the three corners of a square of side a. Find the
electric field at the forth corner.

9. What do you mean by electric dipole moment? Give its SI unit and direction. Derive relation of
electric field due to an electric dipole on its axial line and equatorial line. Write relation between
the both and interpret the result obtained.
10. Define electric field. Give pictorial representation of uniform and non-uniform electric field.
Derive an expression for the torque acting an electric dipole placed in uniform electric field.
What will happen to the electric dipole when it placed in non uniform electric field?
