Edwards, Hannah M. "Daybook Journal." Literacy of an Art Gallery (2015): n. pag. Print.
These journals are an account of my personal experience of studying an Art Gallery at UNCC. In
these journals I discuss the atmosphere and the artwork itself. Each day I was in the Art Gallery I
focused on a different aspect of the gallery. During my observations I noticed who came to the gallery
and what I thought brought them there. I also discussed what I thought about certain pieces in the
gallery and what I thought they represented. This can contribute to my topic that art should be in
education because this gallery is at UNCC which teaches students here the different meanings behind
the artwork and that art isnt always about talent but the message itself. My journals are reliable
because they are personal observations of what happened while I was there.

Goodale, Gloria. "Obama's Call to Arts." The Christian Science Monitor. The Christian Science
Monitor, 16 Jan. 2009. Web. 20 Apr. 2015.
This article is what I am using for my interview because it shows all of Obamas comments on
why he thinks art should be taught in education. Obama plan for increasing funds for National
Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is to increase the partnerships between school and art programs,
creating an artistic corps, and to support the importance of art education publicly. Obama states that
when he was a kid everyone had access to art, even the people that lived in a poor community. He also
mentions that students who are engaged in art are more likely to be more focused on school and
learning. Obama states that art is what makes America what it is today and expresses how it became
what it is today. The Artists Corp would send people talented in art to schools in need to help boost art
education. Obama says that he believes that art could the solution to all the public schools who face
challenges and budget cuts. He believes that creativity and modernization is the key to the success of
our future. This article about Obamas opinion supports the idea that art is an important aspect in the
future of education. This article offered a solution to the lack of art education, Artists Corps. This idea
actually sounds like an innovative idea that could work well in the future. This article was a good
source because it was written by a current and up to date newspaper that covers all controversial topics.

Lynch, Grace H. "Eat Smart for a Great Start Newsletter." PBS. PBS, n.d. Web. 14 Apr. 2015.
This article explains how art helps the development of children as they get older. The article goes
in depth of each skill that is influenced by art. The first skill that art teaches children at a young age is
motor skills, which allows a child to grasp and move things with their hands to create art while they are
working on their movements. Art allows children to learn about the colors they see all around them and
use descriptive words about the shapes and textures they see in their environment. Decision making is a
key development in children who are being taught art because it teaches them to be a more creative
thinker and to try to solve problems in different ways by making their own decisions. Children can also
learn better if they create a visual for themselves so they can interpret it based on what they created
instead of reading it from the text. The next skill art helps develop would be inventiveness because it
allows children to express their feelings and create things on their own without other peoples help, it
give them a sense of independence. Art teaches children about the diversity of the world that they may
not understand by reading. Studies show that children who take art are more likely to do better
academically in other subjects. This article shows the benefits of teaching art in schools and it supports
the idea that art should taught in schools to help students excel better in the future. This source is of
excellent quality because PBS is a well-known kids organization that focuses on the development of
children.

Sammy. "I Believe in Art." This I Believe. N.p., 2 Feb. 2011. Web. 9 Apr. 2015.
This essay mentions how the authors family used art to make their own decisions as children
instead of having to follow a parents guidelines. It explains how art doesnt have to be perfect or even
good, as long as it expresses feelings and a gives a sense of freedom by creating something that you
like. Art teaches children that they dont have to be the best at what they do, as long as they enjoy it and
try their best then they dont have to be perfect. The author concludes her essay by saying that it was
the ability to express herself that showed her that her art was good enough for herself and art made her
who she is in the present. This essay was useful because it showed a personal experience on how art

affected the authors life and it shows that art is proven to help further the development of children. The
quality of this essay was good because it was a person account of the impacts of art in their life even
though the author may not have any credentials but This I Believe is a site for inspiring essays.

Simpson, Judith. "Connections to the World: Visual Art in Urban Schools." The Journal of
Education 188.1, Mentoring Issue: Major Themes (2007): 41-53. JSTOR. Web. 14 Apr. 2015.
This article begins by stating how there is a correlation between academic advancement
and art. It explains how teaching is focused more on basic skills instead of art in larger cities to
save resources like time and money, whereas in some urban schools who still practice art are
expanding. Art has a way of expressing culture and its history through objects and images. It is a
way to help others understand the reasoning behind past events through self-expression. Simpson
states that students are able to understand easier if they help in the process of creating a product.
By helping they are able to make a connection to the information they are given. Art allows
children to be influenced and create their own interpretations and ideas based on what they saw.
Schools do not see the value of visual arts and are starting to take it out of their curriculum which
could highly alter their students learning potential. Visual arts help children with impairments
that dont allow them to fully comprehend what is going on around them. Visual art helps them
learn how to read better, organize their thoughts and ideas, and write descriptions of what they
see. High school students who took art classes learned how to properly express their ideas and
that art can affect how they view themselves. The article also highlights how schools treat their
art programs and barely give them any recognition. They view it as an extra class that is not
needed that students take when there is nothing left to choose from. Simpson concludes by
explaining that if teachers want their students to achieve success and do well in school then they
must learn how incorporate art into their teaching so that students can experience hands on
techniques. This article emphasizes how art affects a students education and why some schools
are taking art out of their curriculum. It supports the idea that teaching art in school can cause a
school to flourish in its academics and future of education. This article was of excellent quality

because I found it through a database called JSTOR and it lists the references Simpson used to
write this informative piece. The article had facts that fully supported my topic on why art should
be taught in schools.

Smith, Fran. "Why Arts Education Is Crucial, and Who's Doing It Best." Edutopia. George Lucas
Education Foundation, 28 Jan. 2009. Web. 14 Apr. 2015.
Smiths article states that art itself isnt what help students but art education because it helps
them find solutions to problems. Smith talks about how art education help improve grades in all
subjects and also helps with things like concentration and motivation. In order to help raise test scores
schools want to spend less time on subjects they deem as unimportant, such as art and science. This
article also mentions how some schools that are bringing back arts are receiving high results that they
hope will influence other schools to start bring back art into their curriculum. Some states have
mandates that say they will implement art in their schools, which they do, but they get around it by
decreasing the class time spent on art so they can focus on other subjects. There are many districts in
the United Stated that are fighting to have art brought back into schools. For example, Minneapolis and
Chicago are partnering with arts and cultural resources to incorporate new art programs instead of
something short term that could be removed because of the budget. This article shows that art
education is a useful topic for students but schools do not think it is as important as subjects like math
and reading. Multiple states approve of art in schools and are trying to bring it back, which goes along
with my topic of why art education is necessary. The quality of this article is excellent because the
author cited the sources within the text and showed statistics as evidence on why art education benefits
students. Smiths article is supported by the George Lucas Education Foundation and Edutopia which
have reputable creditability.

Thompson, Christine Marme. "Teaching Art In Elementary Schools: Shared Responsibilities.." Arts
Education Policy Review 99.2 (1997): 15. Academic Search Premier. Web. 14 Apr. 2015.

This article by Thompson states how a school district restored its art teachers but the way they
completed this was by having the teachers that currently worked there to add art as one of the
subjects they taught even though they arent trained to teach it. Both teachers teach art in
different ways but the author hints that classroom teachers are more capable of relating art to real
world problems and about current subjects they are teaching. Elementary school teachers say
they support art in education because it helps the self-esteem of students and gives them a sense
of gratification that was not found in other subjects. In order to have classroom teachers teaching
art there must be guidelines they have to follow in order to separate their role as a classroom
teacher and art teacher. Art should be a type of expression for children to use in order to share
their thoughts and emotions. As art education becomes more recognized educators anticipate
that children will see art as a fun experience with more meaning that describes their experiences
instead of a chore they are forced to do. Thompson concludes by stating how classroom teachers
can teach art in a different light that may have more impact than an art teacher but an art teacher
can teach their ideas if they receive more time in the curriculum. This article goes into detail
about how art should be taught in schools and what impact it has on a students future. If art
education is reinstated then there must be a new way to teach art that will allow students to
connect it with current and past experiences that may be known around the world or personal.
This article was excellent quality because I found this article from google scholars, which is a
highly reputable source that is used by most education institutes. Thompson is an associate
professor and the chair of an art education program which males her reliable and the article has
all its sources cited so that we know where all Thompsons information came from.

"Why Art Education?" National Art Education Association. NAEA, n.d. Web. 14 Apr. 2015.
This article shows how art affects individuals and society because it represents work, language,
and values. Art teaches students how to complete a job and the satisfaction of completing something to

the best of their ability. Completing art creates a visual representation of all the hard work that they
went through and shows that they were committed to their work. Art is a visual representation of words
which affects how we view things and form opinions. Being able to understand images is part of human
literacy and without it, it is hard to fully comprehend the idea. By analyzing an image it allows a
student to help develop their linguistic skills. Art teaches values about life, the past, and the present
which shows students the importance of other cultures and how a persons life is centered on their
values. A persons values can alter how they view images and ideas in addition to how they choose their
personal morals. NAEAs article was informative and highly promoted the idea that art teaches people
about life skills instead of just learning the basics of art. This article was reliable but the quality wasnt
as good as the other articles because it didnt have an author but it is supported by a well recognized
organization that supports art education around the United States.
