Waitemat Good Citizens Awards

(Held every two years)


(Waitemat is made up of many communities Parnell, Newmarket, City Centre, Grafton, Newton, Eden Terrace,
Freemans Bay, Arch Hill, St Marys Bay, Ponsonby, Herne Bay, Grey Lynn and Westmere).

Awards Criteria and Information


A.

Objectives:
1. To recognise (often unnoticed) voluntary efforts, which benefits individuals and/or
communities within the Waitemat Local Board area.
2. To maintain a quality awards scheme to which people aspire.

B.

Description:
Waitemat Good Citizens Awards:
These awards had been established to recognise and reward:
Individuals who volunteer their time for community benefit
Children and young people who volunteer their time for community benefit
Not-for-profit organisations who volunteer their time for community benefit and/or provide
a platform for individuals to volunteer their time.
The awards will be given to individuals and groups whose contributions have been recognised to
benefit the communities within the Waitemat local board area.

Categories:
(More than one award per category can be awarded at the Boards discretion)

1.

Individual Award
For individual contribution through voluntary work.

2.

Children and Young People Award (24 years of age and under):
For children and young people who have contributed their time to make a positive
difference in the community through voluntary work.

3.

Community Group Award


For contributions made by local groups through their voluntary work, or through the
opportunities they provide to volunteers in their organisation.

Eligibility:
1.

Persons being nominated for an individual or children and young people award must
currently reside within the boundaries of the Waitemat local board area or volunteer to
benefit the communities within the Waitemat local board area.

2.

Community organisations or groups being nominated for an award must either be located
in the Waitemat local board area and contributing to developing the community or
located outside the area but supporting initiatives that help develop the Waitemat
community.

3.

The Awards will recognise volunteer contributions and impact made by individuals,
children and young people and community groups during the period 1 January 2013 up
to 30 April 2015.

Nomination Procedure:
1.

Nominations will be invited through the local print media, social media networks,
eBulletins, word of mouth and direct local stakeholder communication to seek recognition
of volunteers who have given outstanding service to communities in the Waitemat Local
Board area.

2.

Nominations must be made through a completed official nomination form either online or
printed and must be received by the Waitemat Local Board Office by 5pm on 20 May
2015.

3.

Any significant change or amendment to the nominee information provided in the


nomination form should be advised to the Waitemat Local Board office immediately.

4.

The consent of the nominee is not necessary at the nomination stage.

5.

All nominations received will be sent an acknowledgement.

6.

Closing date for nominations will be 5pm, Wednesday, 20 May 2015.

Selection Procedure:
1.

Shale Chambers (Chair), Pippa Coom (Deputy Chair), Greg Moyle (Member) and Deborah
Yates (Member) of Waitemat Local Board, plus two community based leaders chosen by
the Board and a representative from the Waitemat Youth Collective, will comprise the
Waitemat Local Board Good Citizens Awards Selection Panel.

2.

The Selection Panel will review all applications received and make decisions on the
recipients of awards by 28 May 2015.

3.

Following decision-making, all recipients and their nominators will be notified in person or
writing by 2 June 2015 and invited to the Waitemat Local Board Good Citizens Awards
ceremony to be held on 17 June 2015.
