Multi-Genre Reflection

1. Who is your audience? Why did you choose this audience?

My audience is women ages sixteen and up. I chose this audience because I feel like
they are the most prone in becoming a victim of sex trafficking. Pimps prey on young, pretty,
defenseless women. If women are more knowledgeable about the problem and ways they can
protect themselves from falling into the victim role, then the world will be a better place. If
there is less victims, then the pimps dont have as much income coming in.
2. What is your purpose/argument?
My purpose is to educate society about the problem of sex trafficking. Most people
dont realize that it is a problem here in the United States. Throughout my research I found out
that the Super Bowl is one of the largest sex trafficking rings. Most people dont know that,
because it goes unreported. If society is aware of this problem and knows of ways they can
prevent it and help those that may fall victim to it, then we are taking baby steps in making this
world safer. I also am researching the different ways the government officials are being
involved and what actions they are taking to protect the public.
3. What sources did you use to help you fulfill your purpose/make your argument?
I used various sources in order to accomplish my research. Three of the most relevant
sources that I incorporated the most in my research was Sex trafficking in the US from the
Polaris Project, All We Want is Love: Ending Human Trafficking and Sex Slavery, and The
Super Bowl is Single Largest. by the Huffington Post . The Super Bowl is the largest sporting
event that involves human trafficking (Huffington Post) was so surprising. Most people dont
realize that this is a problem. It goes behind closed doors. This group aims to fight the
injustice of modern day slavery. Education allows people to understand what slavery really is.
(All We Want is Love) This website talks about how they help the victims and talk about

different ways to get involved in the organization. The pimps lie and threaten women and
children in order to get them to do what they want. They make up lies about how they can find
them high paying jobs and that they will be taken care of. (Polaris Project) This website talks
about how the pimps lure their victims. It also crunches the numbers of how much a pimp
makes a year.
4. Why did you choose these two genres?
I chose to make a PowerPoint, conducted an interview with Jillian Mourning, and make
a skit that ties both of my other genres together. I chose to use visual and linguistic modes of
communication to appeal to the readers. The PowerPoint explains the history of sex trafficking
as well as information about the pimps. It includes three different organizations that are linked
to sex trafficking and how they are trying to liberate the victims and educate the public. I
decided to hit a personal note, when I interviewed Jillian Mourning. She was sex trafficked
herself and was able to give me some insight of her story and what her organization was all
about. She also expressed her views about how the FBI could do better at protecting women
and catching the pimps and buyers.
5. Where would these genres exist? How would your audience gain access to them?
These genres can exist in magazines, school books and lectures, and on billboards. They
will be able to gain access to the genres from a computer.
6. What modes of communication did you rely on most heavily?
I relied on visual, spatial, and linguistic modes of communication. The pictures and
words are spaced nicely and have some sort of order. There are pictures to catch the readers
eye. I used many types of words that can make a connection with the reader. I bolded some
words, and made some fonts bigger than others.

7. How did you appeal to your audience?

Ethos: I use a number of reliable sources for my research such as the Huffington Post and
Polaris Project.
Pathos: I appeal to pathos through my text style and pictures. I use numerous fonts, pictures,
and word choices that enable the readers to connect with what they are reading. Some of the
pictures can hit home to some readers, because they are touching, for instance, the pictures on
the slide about the organizations have deep pictures. I also use a personal interview from a
victim of sex trafficking.
Logos: I use different facts and statistics throughout my research and e-portfolio. I structure
my research and essays in MLA format. I have opening, body, and conclusions in my
midterm/research.
8. Explain the timeliness of your piece: why did this particular audience need this particular
message conveyed in this particular way, now?
This particular audience needed this message conveyed so they can be educated on the
problem and know how to get out of a shady situation if they are to get involved. They are able
to see warning signs and be proactive in protecting themselves as well as other people that
might be at risk. They are also aware of how our government is taking action in preventing this
problem.
9. In the end, how successful do you feel your genre pieces would be with your target
audience?
I feel like these genre pieces will be pretty successful with my audience. There are
different types of genres which appeal to the audience visually and emotionally. I think my
readers will like how I presented my final research through the three different types of genres I
chose. They are all displayed differently but they connect with each other.
