PROJECT SYNOPSIS
Project Supervisor: Dr. Aashish Malik
Supervisor Signature:
Tentative Title: Design And simulation of Li-ion Battery pack
Objective
The project aims at developing a highly effective battery pack combination to achieve the desired
power and resolving the negative issues like heat, etc. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries provide an
attractive alternative to other battery chemistries in part due to high energy storage density and
competitive cost. So developing a battery pack of high performance and of compact size that
could be best suited for wide range of applications.

Methodology
The first phase project starts with generating a general equation for Li-ion batteries combination
i.e. in series/parallel connection. The second phase is all concerned with designing and
simulating the Li-ion batteries, and then we will look out for the solutions to resolve the thermal
issues at the time of charging /discharging. This will be done by analyzing the battery pack in
ANSYS FLUENT and then simulating it so as to get high performance. Then the third phase is
building a prototype to demonstrate the theoretical results using mobile batteries since mobile
batteries are cheap and compact in size.

Literature Review
Compared to alternative battery technologies, Li-ion batteries provide one of
the best energy-to-weight ratios, exhibit no memory effect, and experience
low self-discharge when not in use. Though Li-ion batteries provide high energy
density at low cost, but are limited in application because of the high heat generation rates
coupled with the adverse effect of temperature on battery life as pointed out by XIAO HU, in
Designing Batteries For Electric Vehicles. In a battery pack Li-ion cells are to be stored close
together and provide high electric power, which can lead to temperatures that degrade the battery
life. Traditional cooling systems, such as an air-cooling system with an electric fan, are not
attractive solutions due to the bulkiness and additional power. All these battery packs are
designed to work under a range of temperature of

-200 C to 5 00 C. Much of the emphasized

works have used Model order reduction technique for studying the thermal behavior. Clearly,
there is scope here for a great deal more research .

Current Status/development
1) A lot of work has earlier been done on Li-ion batteries. So to understand the scope we are
reading the published works.
2) Testing the combinations of batteries to generate a general function for series or parallel
connection of Li-ion batteries.
