Lesson: Henna Tattoo Art and History Project

PASS Objectives: ART Standards 1,2,3 and 4


WORLD HISTORY Standards (These will be based on what chapters you use this
lesson with.)
Students will be taught facts of the historical and cultural significance of Henna tattoo.
OBJECTIVE
Students Will: After viewing the presentation on Henna Tattooing students will engage
in a hands on project on Henna Art.
MATERIALS
Teacher:

Handout on Henna Tattoo history and cultural issues.


Slide presentation of Henna tattoos.
Software for word processing, PowerPoint, etc.
Overhead projector, (Infocus Machine)
Paper worksheets for drawing of hand designs.
Felt Markers for student use.

Students:

Pencils as needed for initial drawing of designs (if wanted).

SET UP AND PREPARE

Make enough copies of all handouts before introducing the lesson.


Be sure to have any additional materials (worksheets) available.
Motivate students the day you introduce the activity.

DIRECTIONS
Part 1: Introduction
Step 1: Introduce the activity by tying in the Henna lesson with either current chapter of
next chapter of World History.
Step 2: Explain briefly to students what their requirement will be in regards to the art
work and how you will be grading it.
Step 3: Explain to students that there will be questions on the taught material on an upcoming quiz or test.

Part 2: Presentation
Step 1: Using the PPT presentation provide the students with the back-ground
information on the history and cultural use of Henna Tattooing.
Step 2: Using the handout have students look through and discuss any significant items
and examples. Remind students that all work should be school appropriate.
Step 3: After the presentation pass-out the work sheets and allow the students time to
attempt their own designs using any patterns seen around the room and examples
provided in the hand-outs.
Step 4: Walk around the room taking note to make sure that all art-work is school
appropriate and provide reinforcement and positive feed-back to students.
Note: Take up pens and hand-outs prior to end of hour and prep class for the next days
work.
Part 3: Research and Preparation
Step 1: make sure to read through the brochure and the slides. Consider what questions
you may want to ask along with what questions you feel your students may ask based on
the provided information.
Step 2: Encourage students to consider what their design work will be for day two at the
end of day one.
Step 3: Determine if you want students to take home the hand-outs at the end of day two
or will you retain them.
Part 4: Assessment
Using primarily an effort based assessment of their drawings determine if students
attempted to recreate a useful design. Grade them on participation.
Using the hand-out and slide information prepare a study guide for students on the
information you wish to assess their understanding of. You may wish to allow them to
have the hand-out during a quiz. This would allow you to ask for constructed answers
based on designs presented in the hand-out.
NOTE: You may find afterwards that you need to modify the lesson for further use or
allow students to take the work-sheets home to do.
