DISCUSSION
This experiment occurs to determine the mass transfer coefficient. For this experiment,
we used the liquid-liquid extraction column to get the raffinate, extract and feed solution.
Then we titrated the sample with 0.1M NaOH and 0.025M NaOH. The mass transfer
coefficient value when titrated with 0.1M NaOH is 0.5741 kg/min while the mass transfer
coefficient value when titrated with 0.025M NaOH is 0.9928 kg/min.
The result shows when the concentration of NaOH decrease, the mass transfer rate
increase. So, we can say that the mass transfer rate will differ due to the concentration of
NaOH increase.
The value from this experiment might be different with the theoretical value. This
maybe because of parallex error occur during the experiment progress. First of all, the
position of the eye during taking the volume value at the burette and measuring cylinder, the
eye position must be perpendicular to the burette and measuring cylinder.
Besides that, the error might be caused by impurities at the beaker, measuring cylinder
and conical flask. To avoid the error occur, all the apparatus we use must be clean by using
distilled water.
During titration the error must be occur to get the pinkish-purple color. The color
might be not constant because to get all the same color is not as easy as pie. When the color is
not constant, the value of mass transfer coefficient will be different from the theoretical value.
