This en- ‘sures thatthe timber'e moisture content vill tnd to incroase over its lifespan, reduc ing the risk of fissuring due to drying, ‘The fabrication process adopted for the double-curved beams also has the advan- tage of inlrocucing glue planes close to the surface in both directions. This tends to ‘slow dowm changes in moisture content of the section, making it less sensitive to oycl= cal changes in the external environment both reducing the risk of fissuring, and limit ing creck dept to the outer layer af timber. Inthe end, this form of double lamination | ‘was adopted evan for the planar ourved el ‘ements to enhance their durability and re sistance to fisuring, In timber design the connoctions are typi- cally the system's most critical elements, {and this was certainly 1ue of this project. ‘The nature of the structure meant that con- noctions had to be continuous, transferring principal loads in the strong direction for timber (axial and bending forces in the d- rection of the grain). However, due tothe structure's geometrical complexity, eccan- trcities were inevitable, and these tended to introduce additional secondary torsional and bending forces, The classic connection dltail involves slotting a vertical etoel plato into the timber section and linking the two vat a grid of 16 mm diameter transversal pins. This approach had to be adapted to incorporate to plates in order to generate the push-pull necessary to wrensfer the sec ‘ondary torsion and bending forces. This technique required high-precision fabrica- tion so that the pre-diled holes forthe pins in the timber aligned perfectly with those in tho twin plates.
