Drainage and Flooding

Hydraulic modeling is at the core of drainage
and flood risk assessments, and Innovyzes
comprehensive portfolio of modeling packages
represents the leading solutions for this work.
The InfoWorks product suite is founded
on strong modeling expertise developed in
Wallingford, UK, and its products excel as
both stand-alone and workgroup solutions.
InfoWorks ICM SE (Sewer Edition) builds
on the long heritage of the recently retired
InfoWorks CS (Collection Systems), offering
fast and robost full hydrodynamic simulation
in the urban environment.
The cutting-edge InfoWorks ICM (Integrated
Catchment Modeling) builds upon InfoWorks
ICM SE, providing truly integrated all-source

catchment modeling in one solution, while

adding a whole new level of capabilities to
redefine the process of hydraulic model build
and simulation. Within InfoWorks ICM the
advanced InfoWorks 2D engine is included
as standard. InfoWorks ICM Suite provides
even more modeling power with the historical
and real-time data management capabilities of
ICM TSDB and the economic evaluation of
flood risks with ICM RiskMaster.
In addition, InfoWorks RS (River Systems)
has established itself as one of the foremost
river modeling solutions in the world, with the
option of adding the InfoWorks 2D engine to
provide very fast, accurate and detailed surface
flood modeling of flows through complex
geometries.

InfoSWMM & H2OMAP SWMM suites equip

engineering professionals with fully dynamic
urban drainage network modeling based on an
improved version of the US EPA Storm Water
Management Model (SWMM). InfoSWMM
provides these capabilities as an Esri ArcGIS
extension and has the option of an additional
2D module (InfoSWMM 2D) plus InfoSWMM
SFEM for automated sewer flow estimation,
while H2OMAP SWMM operates as a standalone geospatial application.
InfoSewer & H2OMAP Sewer suites provide
very powerful steady-state and quasi-dynamic
design and analysis of sanitary, storm and
combined sewers. InfoSewer provides these
capabilities as an Esri ArcGIS extension, while
H2OMAP Sewer operates as a stand-alone
geospatial application.

Real-time flood forecasting has become an

increasingly standard requirement around the
world, with improvements in computing power
now able to support the running of very large,
sophisticated hydraulic network models in a
timely manner. Critical real-time operational
forecasting, early warning, and emergency
management for unparalleled decision-making
capability is now made possible using ICMLive
in combination with InfoWorks ICM, or
SWMMLive in combination with InfoSWMM
(and H2OMAP SWMM).
Innovyzes FloodWorks combines InfoWorks
RS unprecedented simulation capabilities with
up-to-the-minute telemetry to provide flood
forecasting and essential warnings for river
systems to both system operators and the
public.

any aspect of the models performance

INTEGRATED ALL-SOURCE CATCHMENT MODELING

InfoWorks ICM (Integrated Catchment Modeling) builds on the capabilities of InfoWorks ICM SE
by enabling the dynamic integration of one-dimensional (1D) hydrodynamic simulation of flows
and two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic simulation of surface flooding in the urban environment
and river floodplain. It provides a powerful solution for simultaneously modeling below-ground
and above-ground elements of catchments to accurately represent all flow paths and improve
understanding of the processes occurring in the holistic environment.
APPLICATIONS
Flooding and pollution prediction under
complex urban and river interaction
Assessment of future catchment needs as a
result of growth or climatic changes
Irrigation and drought management
Hydraulic analysis of wastewater treatment

GREATER EFFICIENCIES WITH REMOTE

SIMULATION
InfoWorks ICM Remote Simulation allows remote agent
machines to simulate models, allowing engineers to return
to the task of modeling without affecting their computers
performance. This is increasingly valuable as engineers
need to evaluate a large number of scenarios within complex
environments, with the benefit of the latest 2D simulation
techniques.

Sediment transport and water quality modeling

and pollution control assessment
UNPRECEDENTED MODEL CREATION
InfoWorks ICM gives engineers the ability to create a
single model that contains the salient features existing in
an environment with a single, unified hydrology. Manholes,
pipes, and inlets can be combined with natural and manmade channels to create a model in which the catchment and
the floodplain are one, as they are in real life. The additional
ability to model objects such as bridges, sluices, weirs and
pumps allows the creation of models that are more complete
and more accurate than ever before.

CUTTING EDGE SIMULATION TECHNIQUES

Full two-dimensional (2D) surface flood modeling can
be employed across both the wastewater and river
components of the model, providing more precise modeling
of flows through complex geometries.
Water quality and sedimentation studies can be carried out
across both 1D and 2D areas, allowing users to assess the
fate of pollutants entering the catchment from both wash
off and point sources. Users can model dissolved oxygen,
nitrite, nitrate, pH, salt, water temperature, coliforms and
more.
The linking of 1D river channels and 2D floodplain is
carried out by means of lateral banks. The flow can pass
between these two components at any location along the
river, allowing real life conditions to be more accurately
modeled.

INFOWORkS ICMExCHANGE
A full-featured programmers toolkit, ICMExchange enables
users to directly import and export InfoWorks ICM data in
a variety of formats (e.g., Oracle, SQL, Geodatabases) as
well as interface with the powerful InfoWorks ICM simulation
engine to create their own custom solutions. It also streamlines
the creation of custom applications and interfaces that enable
users to view or modify data for evaluation and comparison of
various modeling scenarios.

Drainage and Flooding

Suite
REAL-TIME DATA AND EVENT MANAGEMENT PLUS ECONOMIC
EVALUATION OF FLOOD RISkS
Planning, designing, operating, optimizing and sustaining safe and reliable drainage systems is
faster, easier and more accurate, with the expanded suite and advanced functionality of industryleading InfoWorks ICM. The new InfoWorks ICM Suite for comprehensive integrated catchment
management is now available via three targeted products: InfoWorks ICM, ICM TSDB and ICM
RiskMaster and provides a complete set of superior modeling tools to address all aspects of
integrated catchment management.

ICM TSDb
A powerful and comprehensive time-series
database, ICM TSDB lets utilities archive, analyze
and aggregate real-time and historical data,
including radar images and meteorological
forecasts, into user-defined actionable information.
They can then use this data to drive simulations
of past and future events for optimal management
of urban and rural catchment systems. This
critical software tool will allow utilities and river
authorities to not only productively learn from
past events, but effectively monitor, forecast and
better react to future events. These capabilities
facilitate a new level of vulnerability assessment
and collection system protection while reducing
or eliminating property and environmental damage
and safeguarding public health.

POWERFUL DECISION-MAkING SUPPORT

ICM TSDB delivers a powerful combination of 2D rainfall
data and time-series data, along with a suite of analytic and
visualization tools that monitor the performance and capacity
of collection systems. This gives users a comprehensive,
real-time view into current system operations, enabling them
to make informed, timely decisions.

REAL-TIME OPERATIONS INTELLIGENCE

Despite the widespread availability and use of 2D rainfall
and time-series network data (e.g., rain gauge, level gauge,
flow gauge), collection system models are not continuously
updated with real-time field and radar data. This generally
confines the applications of these models to offline analyses.
While such analyses can provide useful information for
network design and long-range capital planning applications,
they lack the predictive accuracy critical to operational
and emergency event management. ICM TSDB (Time
Series Database) provides accurate network performance
and operational information from real-time data, enabling
engineers and operators to quickly and reliably assess the
integrity of the network and respond to potential overflows,
flooding and other non-routine events.

REAL-TIME DATA DRIVEN SIMULATION

ICM TSDB extends the utility of smart network modeling to
encompass real-time field and radar data-driven simulations
and predictive forecasting capabilities. It brings all relevant
data from disparate sources into a single system readily
available for detailed analysis using InfoWorks ICM. This
enables operators to detect problems before they become
events, and gives them crucial time to react and reduce or
eliminate their impacts. Such advanced capabilities greatly
enhance the ability of wastewater utilities to predict flood
risks, support cost-effective drainage management and
online urban flooding forecasts, and improve drainage
system operation.

ICM RISkMASTER
A revolutionary risk-based analysis extension for
InfoWorks ICM, ICM RiskMaster enables users to
accurately compute both the damage caused by
specific flood events and expected annual flood
damage. Calculations are based on the hydraulic,
hydrologic and economic data for any number of
simulated damage receptors including residential,
commercial and industrial properties. These
powerful predictive analysis capabilities provide
InfoWorks ICM users with both a quantification
of the current flood risk associated with their
collection systems and a long-term planning
framework for making the most effective decisions
on flood risk management and alleviation
strategies.

RISk-bASED FLOOD MODELING

Traditionally, flood management policies have been based
on the design standard approach, where policy makers
decide on an appropriate protection level to be achieved
(degree-of-protection) in designing and managing their
collection systems. In contrast, flood management policies
based on risk focus on the consequences of flood events and
the best alleviation measures over a given time period. With
its powerful risk-based analytics, InfoWorks ICM RiskMaster
expands the modeling power of InfoWorks ICM to let users
accurately assess and better manage their collection systems
and protect properties from flood events.
Rather than expecting the collection system to simply service
a specific loading level, the new extension directly takes
into account all types of events based on their probability
of occurrence. It combines the inundation results of multiple
events with a database of receptors (properties) and their
vulnerability, based on the probability of occurrence. The
outcome is an estimate of the economic impact of floods
in terms of estimated annual damage (EAD) value, and a
database of inundation depths ordered by return period,
showing the predicted flood recurrence for each receptor.

UNEQUALED GEOSPATIAL HYDROLOGIC

MODELING CAPAbILITIES
InfoSWMM performs dynamic rainfall-runoff simulations for
single event or long-term (continuous) simulations accounting
for climate, soil, land use and topographic conditions of the
watershed. The runoff component operates on a collection
of subcatchment areas onto which rain falls and runoff is
generated. It can account for various hydrologic processes
that produce runoff from urban areas including time-varying
rainfall, rainfall interception, infiltration and percolation,
evaporation, snow melt, flow between groundwater and the
conveyance system, dry weather sanitary flows, user-defined
flows and reservoir routing of overland flow.

POWERFUL & VERSATILE HYDRAULIC

MODELING FEATURES
With the ability to handle networks of any size, InfoSWMM
includes flexible hydraulic modeling features used to route
runoff and external inflows through a network of pipes,
channels, pumps, storage and treatment units and diversion
structures. Once runoff quantity and quality are simulated
and wastewater loads at receiving junctions are determined,
flows are routed using steady state routing, kinematic wave
routing, or fully dynamic wave routing. Users have complete
real-time control of the operation of all hydraulic structures.

COMPREHENSIVE WATER QUALITY

CAPAbILITIES
In addition to modeling the generation and transport of runoff
flows, InfoSWMM can also estimate the production and fate
of pollutant loads associated with this runoff. For any number
of user-defined water quality constituents, a comprehensive
range of processes can be simulated including dry weather
pollutant buildup based on land use, pollutant wash-off
during storm events, dry weather entry of sanitary flows, and
reduction in dry weather loads due to BMP.

COMPREHENSIVE LOW IMPACT DEVELOPMENT

FUNCTIONALITY
InfoSWMM offers comprehensive Low Impact Development
(LID) Controls functionality. LID Controls are low impact
development practices designed to capture surface runoff
and provide some combination of detention, infiltration, and
evapotranspiration to it. InfoSWMM can explicitly model
five different generic types of LID controls. These are:
bio-retention cells, infiltration trenches, continuous porous
pavement systems, rain barrels (or cisterns) and vegetative
swales. Bio-retention cells, infiltration trenches, and porous
pavement systems can all contain optional underdrain
systems in their gravel storage beds to convey captured
runoff off of the site rather than letting it all infiltrate. They
can also have an impermeable floor or liner that prevents
any infiltration into the native soil from occurring. Infiltration
trenches and porous pavement systems can also be
subjected to a decrease in hydraulic conductivity over time
due to clogging.

RICH PRESENTATION OF RESULTS

Using powerful ArcGIS thematic mapping functionality,
InfoSWMM makes it easy to turn dry database information
into stunningly colorful, fully dimensional visualizations.
Users can generate beautiful, accurate and smooth contours
for any variable, including HGL or water quality even
overlay multiple contours on a single drawing. Users can
draw on a range of other sophisticated graphical presentation
tools, including color-coded mapping, dynamic annotation/
labelling, graphing, profiling, customizable tabular reporting,
and vivid VCR-style animation to produce truly compelling
results.

outlet structures including weirs, orifices, and risers.

RDII ANALYST performs rigorous QA/QC of rainfall and

flow monitoring data and decomposes the flow data into

distinct dry-weather flow (DWF) and wet-weather flow (RDII)
components using criteria such as rainfall threshold and
interval between rainfall events. It automatically constructs
and allocates DWF patterns, determines RDII events and
calibrates parameters of the RTK synthetic unit hydrograph
to carry out detailed dynamic flow routing through the
sewer system and evaluate system response. This data is
critical in supporting the development of an optimal capital
improvement program.

SUbCATCHMENT MANAGER lets you automatically and

accurately delineate all subcatchments in your watershed,
calculate their hydrologic and water quality parameters, and
manage distributed rainfall across your drainage system.
You can now develop accurate and reliable dynamic sewer
models faster than ever before.

RISk ASSESSMENT MANAGER automatically computes

the extent of sewer overflows and flooding (volume and
reach), calculates population at risk, pinpoints sources
overloading the system, locates system capacity limitations
and blockages, and estimates property damage costs. It
also facilitates quick examination of overland flow pathways,
showing lateral routes and spreading of floodwaters.

SUSTAIN lets users develop, evaluate, select and place optimal

best management practice (BMP) combinations at various

watershed scales on the basis of cost and effectiveness. This
comprehensive geocentric decision support system greatly
facilitates optimal selection and placement of BMPs and low
impact development (LID) techniques at strategic locations
in urban watersheds. The software can accurately model
any combination of LID controls, such as porous permeable
pavement, rain gardens, green roofs, street planters, rain
barrels, infiltration trenches, and vegetative swales, to determine
their effectiveness in managing stormwater and combined
sewer overflows. Such capabilities can greatly assist users in
developing cost-effective and reliable implementation plans for
flow and pollution control aimed at protecting source waters and
meeting water quality goals. It does so by helping users answer
the following questions: How effective are BMPs in reducing
runoff and pollutant loadings? What are the most cost-effective
solutions for meeting water quality and quantity objectives? And
where, what type, and how extensive should BMPs be?
By seamlessly integrating ArcGIS with SWMM, SUSTAIN
provides critically needed support to watershed practitioners
at all levels in developing stormwater management evaluations
and cost optimizations to meet their program needs. The
software can automatically import any SWMM5.1, InfoSWMM
or InfoWorks ICM model, then evaluate numerous potential
combinations of BMPs to determine the optimal combination
to meet specified objectives such as runoff volume or pollutant
loading reductions. Both kinematic wave and full dynamic wave
flow routing models are fully supported. Among its many vital
applications, SUSTAIN can be effectively used in developing
TMDL implementation plans, identifying management practices
to achieve pollutant reductions under a separate municipal
storm sewer system (MS4) stormwater permit, determining
optimal green infrastructure strategies for reducing volume and
peak flows to combined sewer systems, evaluating the benefits
of distributed green infrastructure implementation on water
quantity and quality in urban streams, and developing a phased
BMP installation plan using cost effectiveness curves.

CONDUIT STORAGE SYNTHESIZER automatically

defines storage capacity in a conduit network (stage storage

relationship) based on a dynamic analysis of wastewater
system volume under changing heads an invaluable tool
when analyzing large and complex gravity-pumped systems.
It can also calculate the depth/volume relationship for natural
channels and floodplains.

DESIGNER quickly determines the most cost-effective

solution to flooding and pollution management by finding the

precise combination of pipe slope and size, storage volume,
pumping capacity and new piping that will best convey
sewer flows without surcharging, overflows, flooding, and
backups at maximum cost savings. These comprehensive
capabilities will greatly assist you in planning and designing
reliable and efficient systems that meet regulations, minimize
your capital investment, and promote healthier communities
and a safer environment.

2D Simulation Solutions
ADVANCED SIMULATION FOR COMPLEx GEOMETRIES
Innovyzes high-performance 2D simulation solutions seamlessly integrate advanced 1D and
2D functionalities in one environment, enabling users to model the most complex storm and
combined sewer collection systems and surface flooding with incredible ease and accuracy. Its
unparalleled 1D/2D dynamic linking capabilities give the unprecedented power to analyze and
predict potential flood extents, depth and velocity and accurately model the interaction of surface
and underground systems.
bENEFITS

FEATURES

Two-dimensional (2D) simulations are significantly

better than one-dimensional (1D) simulations for
modeling flows through any complex geometries
(such as developed floodplains, urban streets and
buildings, road intersections and other transport
infrastructure), and open ground, where either
the source or direction of flow is problematic to
assume.

Analysis and prediction of potential flood

extent, depth and velocity

In urban areas, the situation is exacerbated by the

presence of flood prevention facilities specifically
designed to deflect or divert any excessive flows
during flood events. Modeling such complex flow
scenarios both accurately and efficiently requires
a model with both 1D and 2D engines.

Comprehensive functionality to completely

model the interaction of surface flows,
floodplain structures and underground
systems
Fully integrated 1D and 2D modeling
environments
Multiple surface mesh design optimizes
modeling flexibility and accuracy
Multiple results views, both static and animated

FULLY INTEGRATED CAPAbILITIES

Innovyze 2D simulation solutions are available as seamlessly
integrated components featuring complete interaction with
existing 1D simulation engines. InfoWorks ICM includes 2D
simulation as standard and benefits from additional hardware
acceleration. Built atop ArcGIS, InfoSWMM 2D is available
as an extension of InfoSWMM, providing exceptional ease
of use for ArcGIS users. Additionally InfoWorks RS 2D is
available as an additional module. Across all solutions, use
of GIS data is optimized to enable fast and effective model
creation and deliver detailed and accurate simulations.

FLExIbLE SIMULATION MESHING

2D simulations are based on a surface mesh that gives
users maximum flexibility, increasing the type of flows that
can be modeled and ensuring that the system topography
is modeled as accurately as possible. Multiple mesh types
(triangular unstructured, quadrangular unstructured, and
multiblock rectangular); the inbuilt mesh generator; variable
mesh resolution; and variable mesh roughness present a wide
range of options to modelers. The ability to create 2D models
within larger 1D models and to only perform calculations on
wet elements combined with volume conservation analysis
enables 2D modeling to be performed quickly and reliably.

SOPHISTICATED MESH FEATURES

A large number of structures can be easily modeled in
2D. Voids can be specified to represent objects, such as
buildings, where meshing and simulation need not occur. In
addition, one-dimensional features such as brick walls can
be modeled with a set height over which water can flow.
Walls and other objects can also be specified as porous,
allowing them to represent objects that may pass some flow.
Additionally, they can be set to fully or partially collapse during
a simulation based on particular criteria, increasing the level
of model realism. 2D meshes can also be enhanced by the
use of break lines that force mesh element edges to follow
a particular path and can be used to define objects such as
ridges or ditches. All 2D solutions can take advantage of
underlying GIS data to facilitate fast structure creation.

RICH PRESENTATION OF RESULTS

2D simulation results can be displayed in a variety of formats
allowing quick and easy interpretation. The mesh elements
properties dialog provides simple access to results such as
water depth, velocity and direction, maximum hazard, time to
first inundation and time to peak inundation. Results can also
be shown as themes on the GeoPlan and 3D views, through
time-varying grids and graphs and in long section views.
Further refinement is provided by 2D point and line results.
Results can be exported to standard industry formats,
including the KMZ file format for display in Google Earth.

modeling and advanced analytics to expand and maintain
large, complex and rapidly aging wastewater collection
systems. Its primary strength is the ability to accurately
estimate current and future sewer system flows to help users
evaluate sewer system capacity and overloaded sewer mains
with a high risk of collapse, and determine the condition of
sewers. Armed with this information, wastewater utilities can
plan improvements that mitigate or avoid adverse public
health and economic impacts and keep the sewer system
operating effectively well into the future, even in the face of
limited budgets and growing populations.

InfoSWMM SFEM uses standard census and land use data

to project near and long term population growth, create a
population distribution pattern on the block level of a region,
and estimate the dry weather flow of each sewershed. The
sewersheds are dynamically generated based on userdefined sinks allowing flow accumulation and flow estimation
based on a sophisticated basin logic tree. The logic tree is
then used to develop a comprehensive methodology for
estimating flows within a sewershed or basin from four main
components including residents, employment, industries and
groundwater basins.

COMPREHENSIVE PLANNING CAPAbILITIES

InfoSWMM SFEM lets users conduct several levels of
planning studies to assess current sewer system capacity
and future capacity needs, identify hydraulic deficiencies, and
determine sound and cost-effective system improvements,
flow routing, and operation plans. In addition, it can be
effectively used to identify strategic flow gauging locations,
calibrate estimated flows, manage industrial discharges and
perform general planning analyses.

ADVANCED ARCGIS-bASED ANALYTICAL ASSET MANAGEMENT AND

CAPITAL PLANNING
NASSCO PACP, MACP and LACP V6.0 certified, InfoMaster is a complete ArcGIS-based asset
integrity management and capital planning software for water and wastewater networks. It
leverages existing GIS and IT investments and uses state-of-the-art mathematical models
to predict when a water or sewer pipe will fail, helping utilities determine the most costeffective solution for avoiding or correcting the problem. In this way, users can ensure the
best distribution of dollars spent on replacement and repair of underground pipes. With
versions designed for the desktop, Web, and iOS mobile devices, InfoMaster enables dayto-day operational management and long-term network planning for users throughout the

bUSINESS INTELLIGENCE FOR WATER AND
SEWER SYSTEMS
Maintaining water and sewer assets in fit-for-purpose
condition throughout their target lifespans is a primary
goal for utilities worldwide, and selecting the right pipes
for rehabilitation at the right time is one of the main asset
management challenges. An understanding of how pipes fail,
combined with a quantitative grasp of the underlying causal
factors likely to induce failure, is valuable in formulating a
targeted approach to rehabilitation, repair and renewal
planning. InfoMaster accurately estimates both the likelihood
and consequence of failure for each individual pipe in the
network, as well as the amount and time of occurrence of
future failures. This critical information facilitates a proactive
approach to identifying and managing these high-risk assets
to help preserve structural integrity and keep the network
operating well into the future. It also eliminates reactive
maintenance: waiting for pipe failures to occur before
repairing. With minimal effort, utilities can quickly pinpoint
assets at the greatest risk of failure, identify the best possible
improvement alternatives for optimal system performance,
prioritize and phase improvements based on available
budget, and realize significant cost savings.

OUT-OF-THE-bOx DATA HUb

With its intelligent out-of-the-box approach to geospatial
smart wet infrastructure asset management a distinct point
of differentiation from traditional enterprise resource planning
(ERP) solutions InfoMaster revolutionizes business
analytics and optimization (BAO) for water and wastewater
utilities. While the typical enterprise software deployment
requires a 12- to 18-month implementation cycle, InfoMaster
can be deployed in just a day to a few weeks giving small
to medium sized utilities the first-ever opportunity to optimize
network management at very low cost. Where other ERP
systems are focused on electronic records management,
InfoMaster is built from the ground up to provide superior
business analytics and modeling capabilities. This marks the
first time utilities can manage and control the flow of both
data and water for better, faster and more accurate decision
making. InfoMaster also comes preconfigured to understand
water and sewer networks. For example, it knows that sewer
pipes have upstream and downstream manholes, a hydrant
is connected to the distribution system with a lateral, scoring
of CCTV defects, and dozens of other items functionalities
specific to water networks. The database leverages the

existing Esri water and wastewater data models to include

the ability to store information about incidents and tasks
related to the network, enabling users to derive actionable
information or key performance indicators.

PIPE FAILURE/DETERIORATION MODELING

InfoMaster features the Linear Extended Yule Process
(LEYP), the Cox proportional hazards model, and the
advanced time-based probabilistic Weibull and Herz models
for modeling the aging processes of water and wastewater
network pipes and accurately estimating their lifetimes and
structural/functional failure potential and distribution over
time. These powerful asset integrity modeling techniques let
users accurately estimate the likelihood of pipe breaks in the
future and determine the parameters that most affect that
likelihood. These may include pipe diameter, length, material,
year of installation, location, operating pressure, rainfall,
land use, soil properties, temperature, traffic loads, seismic
zone, ground water level, proximity of other underground
installations, and history of failure. Armed with reliable pipe
failure predictions, water and wastewater utilities can better
assess their pipes propensity to fail, identifying critical ones,
prioritizing their inspection, and determining rehabilitation
requirements. InfoMaster also features complete manhole
rehabilitation assessment and planning tools and a
detailed valve criticality analysis for improved infrastructure

respond and minimize public exposure and economic impacts on individuals and businesses. A smart water network is the critical
component of a smart water grid. Its premise is the use of real-time information to optimize network operations and performance,
conserve water, and address security challenges. By bringing together and analyzing data including water demand and quality,
weather and climate, energy cost and usage, and operational requirements using advanced analytics, GIS, and real-time network
modeling and optimization tools in the control room, Innovyze SWN system provides utility operators continuous real time insights
into their water network performance, helping use water efficiently and effectively. By combining a constant stream of data with
predictive modeling capabilities, operators can quickly assess events as they occur, identify potential problem areas before they
reach a critical level, and respond decisively to operational challenges. Armed with these powers, operators become a major force
for system improvements, regulatory compliance, and financial planning.

Innovyze Smart Water Network Management Portfolio

Innovzye SWN enables control room operators to continuously monitor the hydraulic and water quality integrity of their distribution
systems, quickly locate operational bottlenecks, directly evaluate problem-solving approaches, control their networks during
critical failures, optimize their emergency response and consequence management plans, and establish an accurate baseline
for measuring and improving their systems operational efficiency. By leveraging existing investment in real-time data acquisition
and telemetry, Innovzye SWN system moves a utilitys routine network modeling applications from basic planning and design to
in-depth monitoring, emergency and maintenance response, unaccounted-for (non-revenue) water reduction, pipe deterioration
modeling, early contamination warning, pipe replacement/rehabilitation, pumping energy cost optimization and water management.
Such capabilities greatly enhance the ability of water utilities to conceive and evaluate reliable and economical water network
management and security alternatives, ensure more efficient water systems, extend their longevity and protect public health.

IWLIVE
The IWLive system acts as the central core for all SWN
components and can perform offline analyses and online
network simulations that are continuously updated with realtime SCADA data. It equips the water utility control room
with modeling tools that are both predictive and reactive.
IWLive issues regularly updated warnings to alert the control
room to problems that may occur in the coming minutes,
hours, or days, allowing operators to quickly determine their
severity and the time of onset and develop reliable response
strategies to minimize downstream effects. For example,
given a predicted low storage tank level, IWLive will analyze
the resulting impact on network hydraulics and determine all
customers negatively affected by low pressures. Alternative
operating scenarios can then be accurately analyzed
and compared to determine the level of improvement
and associated cost, with the most appropriate scenario
selected and quickly acted upon. The software can also
be used to assess the effects of main breaks, pump, valve
and reservoir shutdowns, other scheduled maintenance or
repair, and any other planned/unplanned incidents, allowing
operators to respond in a timely manner with appropriate
countermeasures. Water demand patterns can be updated
based on mass balance (inflow-outflow) to reflect current
conditions or the statistical analysis of historical time-series
values.

bALANCENET
A real-time operations optimization software, BalanceNet
extends the utility of SWN to help operators improve the
efficiency of their networks and ensure more reliable
operations at maximum cost (energy and chemical)
savings. It automatically reads real-time field data, instantly
updates the network model and determines the pump and
treatment plant operation schedules that will yield the lowest
operating cost while satisfying desired system performance
requirements (e.g., tank trajectory curves, minimum and
maximum flows and velocities, total pump flows). BalanceNet
combines an optimized mass balance storage model with the
network model solver to quickly produce a set of near-optimal
solutions for improving system operations. The network
solver automatically defines the mass balance storage model,
accounting for changes in demand, controls and other factors
in each time step of the simulation period. The mass balance
storage model is then optimized using Genetic Algorithms.
Both electricity tariffs and pump switching costs are explicitly
considered. The optimized pumping schedule can then
be directly fed to the SCADA system for implementing the
resulting network control policies.

SCADAWATCH
A real-time business intelligence reporting and visual
analysis software, SCADAWatch brings all key performance
metrics together in the control room for proactive decision-

making and business process optimization. It allows water

utility operators to continuously monitor business operations
and better leverage real-time SCADA data and network
modeling for information flows that are faster, more relevant,
analytically optimized and actionable.

PRESSUREWATCH
A real-time network hydraulic integrity monitoring software,
PressureWatch gives water utility owners and operators the
unprecedented ability to visualize and assess their network
hydraulic performance in real time, compare current network
dynamics with anticipated performance, and identify abrupt
changes that do not fall within normal operating ranges
and the onset of anomalous hydraulic incidents they can
evaluate and act on. This allows them to manage their water
distribution networks in a more effective and highly proactive
way.

QUALWATCH
A real-time water quality event detection and contamination
warning system, QualWatch enables water utilities to
continuously monitor and assess network water quality
dynamics as they occur, helping them identify breaches in
water quality integrity and narrow down their locations, and
build the resiliency and agility to respond with maximum
effectiveness and protect public health. It also empowers
users to foresee and pre-empt future network water quality
integrity breaches.

SMART WATER NETWORk
INFOMASTER
A comprehensive asset integrity management and capital
planning software, InfoMaster extends the utility of SWN
to include predictive analytics for estimating the remaining
useful life of the network pipes, anticipating network
deterioration, and informing pipe replacement. It can be
effectively used to assess and score the risk profile (taking
into account both the probability and consequence of failure)
for each pipe in the network and identify the worst-performing
ones. The greatest attention can then be given to pipes at
highest risk (i.e., the worst performing). Through this ranking
process, water utilities can create fully prioritized short- and
long-term pipe rehabilitation, replacement, maintenance and
management plans (phasing of network improvements) and
develop cost-effective capital programs to support them.
InfoMaster also helps extend the useful life of network pipes,
improve predictive maintenance, reduce downtime, and
preserve capital. The result is improved asset and capital
planning and network capacity, reliability and performance
and sustainable water service.

DEMANDANALYST

SCADAMASTER

Loaded with advanced data management, correlation and

analytics, DemandAnalyst fully automates the process of
accurately calculating and allocating daily water demands
and their associated diurnal patterns directly from smart
meters for comprehensive real-time modeling and calibration
of water distribution networks. Its primary strength lies in its
ability to continually update nodal demand (water usage)
values directly from smart metering to power decision making.

SCADAMaster provides a simple solution for monitoring and

controlling SCADA systems. It allows easy access to current
system information that can then be utilized for real-time
monitoring, forecasting, and optimization. With this enhanced
information, control room operators can communicate back to
the SCADA system to implement changes in an emergency
or with newly optimized controls.

INFINITY SYSTEM

DEMANDWATCH
A comprehensive pattern-based water demand forecasting
application software for real-time, near-optimal control and
management of water distribution networks. DemandWatch
analyzes patterns from historical demand data and uses a
powerful combination of Fourier transform and time-series
autoregression modeling to accurately predict short-term
water demands. These patterns are utilized to identify
seasonal and weekly periodicities in daily water demands and
daily periodicities in hourly water demands. DemandWatch
generates water demand forecasts at hourly intervals or at
finer user-defined resolutions. Its results can be readily used
by IWLive to perform accurate simulations that reliably predict
network operational performance over the next few hours
or days. The results of these simulations can then be used
for optimal operation and management of water distribution
systems. DemandWatch can also configure and calibrate
network models, aided by graphs and other pertinent reporting
tools. Its adaptive learning process enables it to continuously
generate predictions, taking observations from the recent
past and predicting demand for the near future. Even if there
is a loss of observed telemetry data, DemandWatch can still
generate predictions from cyclical components of the model.
Armed with this power, water utilities can better plan, operate
and manage their distribution systems, improve conservation
measures, minimize energy consumption, meet regulatory
compliance, and enhance customer service.

A comprehensive time-series application database, Infinity

System extends the utility of SWN to provide a real-time and
historical data and event infrastructure for water, wastewater,
stormwater, river and combined systems management to
support mission-critical operation decisions. It is engineered
to help meet the growing demand for real-time data to pinpoint
critical events, make faster, more informed decisions, reduce
costs, and mitigate negative impacts.

Used together with SCADA systems and smart sensors, the

Innovyze SWN system gives utilities significant management
advantages, including greater operational efficiency and
emergency preparedness, reduced water loss and system
vulnerability, shortened response time, optimized spending
on network renewals and energy consumption, increased
network reliability and longevity and improved water quality
and sustainability. It also facilitates compliance with more
stringent future regulations, enhanced revenue and resource
management and protection, implementation of a culture of
service and operational excellence, more informed decision
making, and stronger customer ties.

Water Supply

ExPANDED POWER
An array of fast, accurate tools helps you analyze, predict and enhance water supply and
distribution system performance.
DESIGNER exploits the power of advanced genetic
algorithms to intelligently compare hundreds, even thousands,
of new design, rehabilitation, enhancement, replacement,
strengthening and expansion strategies with astonishing
speed. It then identifies the combination that best meets your
required hydraulic performance and design criteria at the
lowest cost. You can now cost-effectively and reliably design
system improvements considering multiple scenarios (e.g.,
maximum day plus fire demand) or over extended periods of
time (e.g., 24 hours) to ensure optimal operation.

CALIbRATOR uses the most efficient variation of genetic

algorithms optimization technology to let you generate optimal
model calibrations in seconds. It considers any combination
of field pressure, tank level, and flow measurements, quickly
determining pipe status and roughness coefficient, pump and
valve status, and demand distribution to best reflect what is
actually occurring in the system. You can simultaneously
calibrate your model for multiple demand loading (fire flows)
and operating conditions or over extended periods of time
(e.g., 24 hour EPS) with astounding speed and accuracy.
This advantage gives you more time to engineer superior
systems.

SCHEDULER delivers a comprehensive array of energy

management capabilities that let you precisely evaluate the
efficiency of your water distribution system, reduce operational
costs and achieve more reliable performance. Scheduler
quickly identifies the daily pump operation schedule that best
meets your target hydraulic and water quality performance
criteria at maximum cost savings. It also helps you create
other performance-enhancing strategies matching desired
tank trajectory curves (filling/draining cycles), comparing rate
schedules, optimizing storage/pumping tradeoffs, and more.

SkELETONIZER simplifies large models to a manageable

size ready for analysis, ensuring both network model integrity
and its hydraulic equivalency. Quickly processing detailed
data, Skeletonizer automatically reduces excessive pipe
segmentation (created by valves, fire hydrants, and the data
capture process) to any desired degree of abstraction. It
merges series pipes based on any combination of physical
attributes (e.g., similar diameter, material and age); removes
pipes less than a specified diameter; consolidates parallel
and series pipes into a single hydraulically equivalent pipe;
trims short pipe segments, including dead ends, service
connections and hydrant leads; and redistributes junction
node demands while maintaining the hydraulic behavior of
your larger original model.
PUMP SYSTEM ANALYST lets users quickly evaluate
whether a pump station meets pumping capacity requirements
and design an improvement plan to best meet system needs
and maintain optimal pumping efficiency. Both series and
parallel pumps are fully supported in selecting the best
options for pump station upgrades, and multiple pump curves
and system head curves can be displayed simultaneously on
a single graph.

WATER QUALITY CALIbRATOR draws on Innovyzes

award-winning water quality modeling technologies to deliver

optimal dynamic water quality calibrations with incredible
speed and precision. It automatically computes your system
water quality parameters (reaction rate coefficients) to best
match actual field measurements, allowing you to maintain
treated water quality and safeguard public health more
effectively than ever before.

DEMAND ALLOCATOR allows you to quickly and flexibly

calculate, distribute, project, and manage water consumption

data in your network model. It ensures the credibility of
every model by fully automating geographical allocation
of nodal demands based on demand type, location, and
variation. Allocator automatically and reliably estimates water
consumption by various customer classes. It also considers
both existing systems and future conditions, making it an
invaluable aid in staging capital improvement programs.

PROTECTOR allows you to model the temporal propagation

and concentration of naturally disseminated, accidentally

released, or intentionally introduced contaminants and
chemical constituents throughout your water distribution
system. It enables you to expeditiously locate and isolate
contaminated areas; assess the effects of water treatment
on the contaminant(s); calculate population at risk and alert
affected customers; and evaluate the potential impact of
unforeseen facility breakdowns (e.g., significant structural
damage and/or operational disruption). It also helps you
track contaminants to the originating supply source(s),
compute required purging of contaminated water volume,
develop efficient flushing strategies, determine the resulting
impact on firefighting capabilities, and prepare critical data
for eventual prosecution.

VALVE CRITICALITY MANAGER is designed to

efficiently assess thousands of valves in a network, enabling

you to accurately evaluate your entire water supply and
distribution system quickly and reliably. It gives you expanded
power and flexibility in identifying all vulnerabilities affecting
the reliability of your water distribution system, estimating
the extent and potential consequences of infrastructure
failure on customer service levels, optimizing the allocation
of rehabilitation and maintenance resources, and improving
knowledge of system operation.

SUSTAINAbILITY helps you quickly determine the carbon

footprint for pumps and the cumulative total energy lost

across all elements in your water distribution network, from
source to consumer tap. You can easily compare multiple
network reconfiguration alternatives, rank networks from
least to most efficient, pinpoint areas with the greatest
potential for improvement, and instantly identify potential
for pumped/pressure-reducing valve optimization as well as
future energy recovery.

bACkTRACE provides comprehensive event backtracking

analysis following the detection of a contamination event,

identifying the most likely originating source locations and
planning effective responses to contamination threats and
incidents.

LEAk DETECTION MANAGER lets you pinpoint leaks in

your water distribution systems and plan timely replacements
or repairs. It uses the rigorous step-test network modeling
method to narrow down leaks to specific areas and pipe
sections an approach well-suited to bracketing high
leakage areas in the system and applicable to any pipe
material. It can help you eliminate inefficiencies, reduce the
risk of contamination, lower operational costs, and improve
system pressures and firefighting capability.
PRESSURE ZONE MANAGER automatically identifies
and accurately delineates pressure zone boundaries and
quickly generates comprehensive pressure zone hydraulic
schematics, including summaries of in/out flows through
pumps, control valves, check valves, storage tanks and
reservoirs.
SENSOR LOCATION MANAGER provides a flexible,

fully automated way to determine optimal sensor locations

for monitoring water quality compliance and water supply
protection. It uses a hierarchical selection process (weighting
factors) coupled with a stepwise approach to monitor site
locations based on water distribution network characteristics
(eliminating unavailable or inaccessible locations), hydraulic
and water quality results (such as flow and residence time),
proximity to critical facilities like schools and hospitals,
population density, and budget. It also facilitates quick review
of recommended monitoring locations and their spatial
distribution, allowing engineering judgment to be the final
criterion.

ADVANCED WATER QUALITY MODELING

InfoWater MSX (Multi-Species eXtension) adds very powerful modeling capabilities, including
the unprecedented ability to accurately model multiple interacting contaminants and sediment
deposition and re-suspension in drinking water distribution systems. InfoWater MSX allows
users to model very complex reaction schemes between multiple chemical and biological
species in the water distribution piping system, both in the bulk flow and at the pipe wall. This
structure gives users the flexibility to accurately model multi-source, multi-quality systems
and a wide range of important chemical reactions including free chlorine loss, formation of
disinfection byproducts, nitrification dynamics, disinfectant residuals, pathogen inactivation,
chloramine decomposition, and adsorption on pipe walls.
INDUSTRY LEADING CAPAbILITIES

PARTICLE TRANSPORT AND DEPOSITION

While there are a number of commercially available programs

for modeling the hydraulic and water quality behavior of
drinking water distribution systems, their water quality
component is limited to a certain number of fixed kinetic
models, and to tracking the transport and fate of a single
dissolved chemical specie like chlorine.

InfoWater MSX can also be effectively used to track the

movement, fate and buildup of particulate material in the
water distribution system. The program can consider both the
settling of particles under gravity as well as their deposition
on the pipe walls due to particle/pipe surface attractive forces.
This feature can greatly assist water utilities in improving
water distribution system design to minimize dirty water and
forge closer ties with their customers.

InfoWater MSX can effectively model any system of multiple,

interacting chemical species. In addition, it lets users input
any complex mathematical models of physical, chemical, and
biological reactions in the bulk water and on pipe surfaces.
It also accepts any number of user-specified parameters and
formulas for process models. This allows for a more complete
analysis of network water quality, including processes such
as adsorption and biological inactivation by a disinfectant.

WATER TEMPERATURE MODELING

InfoWater MSX enables users to model very complex heat
transfer mechanisms between the water in the distribution
pipes and the ambient environment. It directly considers
the influence of ambient temperature, wall material and
thickness, flow conditions, buried depth, and other pertinent
variables that determine how much heat will intrude into the
water in the distribution pipes. Ambient temperature can
be the air temperature of the upper cover (soil, grass and
pavement), and can be described as either a constant or a
time-varying pattern.

POWERFUL UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING SOLUTION

InfoWater UDF delivers unprecedented power and flexibility in managing the systematic
flushing of your water distribution system to restore hydraulic capacity by removing stagnant
water and mineral and sediment deposits that have accumulated over time. Unidirectional
flushing (UDF) is the most effective way of cleaning water mains and maintaining water quality
and system capacity. It also requires the least amount of water of any cleaning method. Valves
are closed and hydrants opened to create a one-way flow. This type of high-speed flushing
increases the swiftness of the water in the mains, maximizing shear velocity near the pipe
wall. This produces a scouring action that effectively removes sediment deposits and biofilm.
These benefits can prolong the life expectancy of your system and reduce the potential for
waterborne disease outbreaks.
bENEFITS
Immediately improve water quality
Eliminate taste and odor problems
Dislodge and remove biofilm without damaging
pipes
Restore disinfectant residual
Reduce disinfectant demand system wide
Curb bacteria regrowth
Control corrosion
Restore flows and pressures
Ensure regulatory compliance
Prolong system life
Diminish potential for waterborne disease
outbreaks
Eliminate dirty water complaints during system
flushing

EFFECTIVE UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING

Unique in its class, InfoWater UDF advanced capabilities
can help water utilities develop effective UDF sequences for
each flushing zone, quickly identifying which fire hydrants
and water main valves should be manipulated for proper
cleaning while avoiding excessive pressure drops (e.g.,
below 20 psi) and maintaining the desired level of hydraulic
performance in the distribution system. The program also
computes minimum flushing time, total flushing volume and
pipe length, flushing velocity of every pipe in the sequence,
shear stress for every pipe in the sequence, and available
flow at the minimum residual pressure. The hydraulic impact
of each flushing sequence is also monitored to ensure that
the desired minimum pressure is maintained throughout
the system. A detailed field journal (flush book) gives field
personnel all the information they need to implement the
optimal flush sequences for maximum cleaning.

UNPRECEDENTED GIS INTEGRATION

InfoWater UDF capitalizes on the intelligence and versatility
of the GIS geodatabase architecture. Building unidirectional
flushing sequences requires the use of the hydrants, laterals,
and valves. It is typically not efficient to include all these
elements in the hydraulic model. InfoWater UDF is built to
take this data automatically from the GIS and combine it
with the hydraulic model to produce the perfect dataset for
building sound unidirectional flushing sequences.

ADVANCED FORECASTING AND SCENARIO EVALUATION FOR THE

WATER DISTRIbUTION SYSTEM CONTROL ROOM
Innovyze has developed IWLive to meet the needs of water utilities to operate their distribution
systems to the very highest standards by making the powerful modeling technology found
in InfoWorks WS and InfoWater instantly accessible to water distribution system operators.
IWLive equips the control room with tools that are both predictive and reactive.
AUTOMATIC SYSTEM PREDICTION

EMPOWERED PRObLEM SOLVING

IWLive issues regularly updated warnings to draw the

operators attention to problems that may occur in the coming
minutes, hours or days. The control room operator can see
the predicted severity of problems and the time of onset in one
easy to use interface. For example, given an unexpectedly
low reservoir level provided by the SCADA system, IWLive
will model the outcomes on the water distribution system
and translate abstract level data into specific customer low
pressure warnings that may occur within the next 12 to 24
hours.

IWLive can also enable the control room operator to evaluate

problem-solving approaches by simulating the closure of
valves or a change in a pumps operating schedule. Additional
tools enhance this process. For example the Isolate Asset
Tool allows an operator to quickly identify and close all the
valves in a model to isolate a broken asset. IWLive quickly
produces a second simulation that can be compared with the
first to determine the level of improvement, the problems that
remain, and the customers who will be affected.

OPTIMIZED OPERATOR ENVIRONMENT

The IWLive interface is fully optimized for network operator
use. At the same time, its simplicity helps operators to become
confident and effective in their use of IWLive. The interface
allows operators to see a map of all water infrastructures for
which they are responsible, including appropriate background
maps. Highlighted color coding shows predicted problem
areas; a single click produces a detailed map showing pipes,
valves, pumps, reservoirs and other water assets. Animation
of the map shows the development of the problem; graphs
show simulated pressures and reservoir levels.

INTEGRATION WITH INFOWORkS WS AND

INFOWATER
IWLive has been designed from the outset to be fully
integrated with Innovyzes water distribution modeling and
management solutions, utilizing the fast, powerful simulation
engine technology available in InfoWorks WS and InfoWater.
Seamless transfer of network models ensures that engineers
can use their desired modeling solution to make any desired
network changes, and that IWLive always has access to
the most up-to-date picture of the water distribution system
without the need for operator intervention.

The network solver automatically defines the mass balance
storage model, accounting for changes in demand, controls
and other factors in each time step of the simulation period. The
mass balance storage model is then optimized using Genetic
Algorithms. Both electricity tariffs and pump switching costs
are explicitly considered. The optimized pumping schedule
can then be directly fed to the SCADA system for use in
implementing the resulting network control policies. These
advantages represent fundamental advances in how readily
water utility operators can evaluate the operational efficiency
of their water networks, then quickly and confidently develop
improved system operations and more reliable performance.

DemandWatch
REAL-TIME PATTERN-bASED WATER DEMAND FORECASTING FOR
SMART WATER NETWORkS
A revolutionary short-term demand forecasting software, DemandWatch changes the way
water utilities around the world leverage historical demand data to estimate future water
demands for real-time, near-optimal control and management of their water distribution
systems. Its primary strength lies in its adaptive demand forecasting process, which can
continually update and refine estimated demand values in real time. Armed with this power,
water utilities can better plan, operate and manage their water distribution systems, improve
conservation measures, minimize energy consumption, meet regulatory compliance, and
enhance customer service.
SOPHISTICATED WATER DEMAND FORECASTING

POWERFUL REPORTING TOOLS

Designed for real-time applications, DemandWatch

analyzes patterns from historical demand data and uses a
powerful combination of Fourier transform and time-series
autoregression modeling to accurately predict short-term
(e.g., 24- or 48-hour) water demands. These patterns are
used to identify seasonal and weekly periodicities in daily
water demands as well as daily periodicities in hourly water
demands. A sequential fitting of terms is automatically
generated to reveal patterns between days and hourly
patterns within days. Fourier transforms are used to find
daily and hourly cyclical patterns. Autoregressive terms add
a short-term memory in order to fine tune daily and hourly
predictions, greatly increasing the accuracy of forecasted
values. DemandWatch generates water demand forecasts
at hourly intervals or finer user-defined resolution. Innovyze
IWLive can readily use the output of DemandWatch to
perform accurate simulations that reliably predict network
operational performance over the next few hours or days.
The results of these simulations can then be used for optimal
operation and management of water distribution systems.

Extremely robust and flexible, DemandWatch can also quickly

configure and calibrate network models, aided by graphs and
other pertinent reporting tools. Its adaptive learning process
enables it to continuously generate predictions, taking
observations from the recent past and predicting demand for
the near future. Even if there is a loss of observed telemetry
data, DemandWatch can still generate predictions from
cyclical components of the model.

HANDLING AbRUPT CHANGES IN WEATHER

CONDITION (TEMPERATURE CHANGES)
DemandWatch automatically takes into account unexpected
temperature changes, which is especially important
during unusually hot summer days. It models the effect of
unexpected temperature changes on daily demand by
taking the difference between the temperature forecast
and the historical average temperature for that particular
season. This difference in temperature is then multiplied by a
regression factor and added to the predicted daily demand.
If the weather forecast is hotter than average, the predicted
demand will be increased. If the weather forecast is not
available, DemandWatch will use the average weather value
for that day to improve the standard demand forecast. As a
result, DemandWatch will always ensure accurate demand
forecasting using all available data.

DemandAnalyst
COMPUTE ACCURATE bASELINE WATER DEMANDS AND ASSOCIATED
DIURNAL PATTERNS FROM SMART METERING
A revolutionary water demand analysis software, DemandAnalyst changes the way water
utilities around the world leverage smart metering to automatically determine accurate,
representative baseline demands and associated diurnal patterns for their water distribution
network models. Its primary strength lies in its ability to continually update nodal demand
(water usage) values directly from smart metering for comprehensive real-time network
modeling and calibration. It is the ultimate approach to developing the most efficient and
reliable drinking water distribution system and minimizing non-revenue water.
ACCURATE CALCULATION OF DAILY WATER
DEMANDS
Accurately determining water consumption and its spatial
and temporal distribution throughout the water distribution
network is a key element in ensuring reliable network model
predictions via real-time modeling. Models are loaded with
customer-specific (e.g., commercial, residential, industrial)
demands at the network nodes, and all supporting sources,
distribution pipelines and available storage within the water
distribution system contribute to meeting these nodal
demands. Most water utilities record water consumption data
manually on a monthly, quarterly or half-yearly basis. This
infrequent data collection is sufficient for billing purposes,
but gives limited information on actual water consumption
behavior, leakage, and seasonal variation for real-time
network modeling.
Smart meters connected to data loggers enable continuous
monitoring of water consumption, providing sufficient data
points to help determine water usage patterns. DemandAnalyst
is designed expressly to give water utilities the accurate realtime water demand estimates and diurnal variations they
need to power their distribution network models. Loaded

with advanced data management, correlation and analytics,

the software fully automates the process of calculating and
allocating nodal demands and their diurnal patterns directly
from smart meters. Armed with a better understanding of their
systems spatial and temporal patterns of water use, water
utility planners can better optimize system operations and
capital planning, improve conservation measures, reduce
inefficiencies, minimize leakage and energy consumption,
meet regulatory compliance and deliver superior customer
service. Water utilities can now continually update customerspecific nodal demand values directly from smart meters to
support power decision making.

POWERFUL REPORTING TOOLS

Built atop ArcGIS and loaded with advanced statistical
data analytics, DemandAnalyst provides increased insight
into the temporal variations of customer-specific water
usage, comprehensive geo-reporting and powerful ways of
visualizing, analyzing and managing the results. Extremely
easy to learn and use, it can be installed, up and running in
just a few minutes on a utilitys local computer.

REAL-TIME WATER DEMAND UPDATING

With DemandAnalyst, network nodal (water) demands can
be updated continuously to reflect and simulate current
conditions. This process of real-time network model updating
results in well-calibrated dynamic models and increased
confidence in model predictions.

Real-Time Network Integrity

and Performance Monitoring
The water distribution system is a critical
component of every water utility. Its primary
function is to economically provide a safe
and reliable water supply at an acceptable
level of service, and its failure to do so is a
serious system deficiency. When hydraulic
and water quality integrity are compromised,
the distribution system can become
exposed to internal and external sources
of contamination that increase the risk of
negative public health outcomes. Because
of the public health and safety implications,

water utilities must meet the challenges of

keeping their water infrastructures up to
date and efficient.
Water distribution system integrity is best
evaluated using real-time methods that
provide warning of potential breaches in
time to effectively respond, minimizing
public exposure and economic impact on
individuals and businesses. Continuous
monitoring, smart metering and sensing
systems are useful, but only predictive

analytics can give water utilities the

insightful view they need to derive actionable
information from real time monitoring data.
PressureWatch and QualWatch give
water utilities real-time surveillance and
control over the viability and health of
their distribution systems. Their powerful
tools can capture and process events and
warn of potential breaches fast enough to
allow for effective response, minimizing
public exposure and economic impact on
individuals and businesses. They also
arm operators with a comprehensive new
set of decision making capabilities. These
include evaluating various problem-solving
approaches; reducing potential exposure
to contaminants and ensuring provision of

safe drinking water supply; controlling their

systems during critical failures; establishing
a rigorous baseline to measure operational
efficiency; delivering accurate, timely water
quality compliance reporting; and more
correctly predicting future events.
SCADAWatch and Infinity System let
water utilities effectively manage their
historical and real-time data into actionable
intelligence for better, faster decision
making and insightful recommendations
at key operational touch points. They also
better equip utilities to understand their
water and energy usage, set realistic targets
for both water and energy conservation,
and monitor progress toward those goals.

Real-Time Network Integrity & Performance Monitoring

PressureWatch
REAL-TIME NETWORk HYDRAULIC INTEGRITY MONITORING
Innovyze has developed PressureWatch to enable water utilities to monitor and assess the
operational efficiency and hydraulic integrity of their water distribution networks in real time,
help them identify network performance problems as they occur and narrow down their
locations. It also empowers water utilities to foresee and pre-empt future network hydraulic
integrity breaches.
PROACTIVE NETWORk MANAGEMENT
The primary strength of PressureWatch is its ability to monitor
real-time changes in network hydraulics (i.e., pressure, flow
and tank water level) and identify potential anomalies fast
enough to permit effective responses aimed at lessening or
avoiding adverse public health and economic impacts. It makes
the hydraulic integrity of the distribution system immediately
visible through continuous monitoring and assessment of
network hydraulic dynamics. PressureWatch enables water
utility operators to compare hydraulic data against prescribed
performance requirements (e.g., minimum and maximum
pressures), either confirming normal system performance or
identifying abrupt changes that fall outside normal operating
ranges and the onset of anomalous hydraulic incidents they
can evaluate and act on. For example, objectionably low
pressures, caused by failure of a pump or valve, may lead
to inadequate supply and reduced fire suppression capability

Anomaly Detection System

Input

or, in extreme cases, intrusion of potentially contaminated

water. Objectionably high pressures will intensify wear on
valves and fittings, increasing leakage; they may also cause
additional leaks or breaks with subsequent repercussions
on water quality. Similarly, changes in flow (magnitude and
direction) within the water distribution system as a result of
hydrant flushing and valve and pump operation can scour
sediments, tubercles and scales off the interior pipe walls,
degrading water quality. Maintaining flow, pressure and tank
water level fluctuations within reasonable ranges will enable
proactive network management that ensures both a reliable
water supply and safety and security for all consumers. A
mass balance for each pressure zone can also be quickly
developed to assist in determining unaccounted-for (nonrevenue) water.

REAL-TIME NETWORk PERFORMANCE

MONITORING
PressureWatch is intended for use in the utility control room
to help operators better understand normal background
fluctuations in their water distribution systems and identify
anomalies that are potentially indicative of network hydraulic
integrity breaches. Specifically, it helps them distinguish
between changes caused by the loss of network hydraulic
integrity and changes caused by normal background
variability. The software uses advanced modeling algorithms
for estimating hydraulic parameter values at specific
locations and times, comparing them in real time with actual
measured values and screening for any potential hydraulic
integrity failures. It then outputs the calculated probability of
a hydraulic event and triggers an alarm, if warranted, that
operators can evaluate and act on. Operators can now make
better predictions and smarter decisions, and target more
effective interventions.

REAL-TIME NETWORk ANOMALY DETECTION

Designed for online applications with existing SCADA systems
and pressure and flow meters and sensors, PressureWatch
can quickly analyze and filter this data in real time to remove
extreme values, compare data to expected values, recognize
abnormal changes and automatically compute the probability
of an anomalous hydraulic event. A hydraulic event is
defined as a potential breach in the hydraulic integrity of the
network. PressureWatch can read hydraulic data from any
sensor manufacturer for the three main types of hydraulic
measurements: pressure, flow and tank water level.

COMPELLING RESULTS PRESENTATION

Easy to learn and use, PressureWatch is available as a
stand-alone program that runs on nearly any computer or
as a complementary module of IWLive. Its vivid dashboard
expresses real-time data in compelling graphs, gauges,
charts, bars, overlays, map views, and more. PressureWatch
also generates detailed reporting and complete data export
flexibility, and facilitates communication through customizable
alerts (email, Twitter), including main break notifications.
Unlike complex software as a service (SaaS) solutions,
it can be up and running in just a few minutes within the
controlled security of the utilitys local computer. In addition,
it does not require any historical data or secondary data from
external sources for comparison purposes. PressureWatchs
unique integration with network modeling and GIS enables
water operators to quickly identify viable solutions (e.g.,
locate the appropriate valves to close to isolate a main break
and determine affected customers) and make decisions
on the basis of reliable predictive analytics and system
dynamics rather than intuition. These critical differences
mark the first time water utilities of all sizes have been able to
use geospatial network modeling to readily optimize network
maintenance and management securely and at very low
cost. They also greatly enhance utilities ability to prepare for
and respond to emergencies.

KNOWLEDGE FOR PROACTIVE DECISION

MAKING
SCADA systems give utilities real time information about the
status of their water distribution and collection systems. Most
SCADA systems are optimized to provide fast and reliable
data directly to the control room but not to the analytics
level for decision support and business process optimization.
To create these day-to-day business analytics, water utility
operators must manually extract, piece together, comprehend
and analyze static data. SCADAWatch solves these complex
offline analyses challenges by letting operators instantly
optimize business processes from the control room, using
user-level customized dashboard reporting and high fidelity,
real-time data and analytical techniques such as business
rules, correlations, signal processing and powerful statistics.
This provides better leverage without impacting existing
systems. Users can instantly access, analyze and drill down
