GBTS
Commissioning Guide
This chapter describes the changes in the issues of the GBTS Commissioning Guide.
2 General Requirements for the Commissioning
The general requirements for the commissioning are the commissioning resources and
commissioning prerequisites.
3 Commissioning the BTS on the M2000
This chapter describes how to commission a GBTS. The M2000 provides the GBTS
commissioning function. After making necessary preparations such as hardware installation,
you can use this function to enable the M2000 to commission a GBTS and verify GBTS services
automatically and remotely so that the GBTS can be used properly after the commissioning.
4 Commissioning the BTS on the LMT
This chapter describes how to commission the BTS through the LMT on the BSC side when the
transmission cable between the BSC and the BTS is properly connected.
5 Commissioning the BTS on the SMT
The commissioning of the BTS in the transmission unavailable scenario consists of two phases.
In the initial phase of the commissioning, the transmission cable between the BSC and the BTS
is not properly connected. Commission the BTS at the local end. In the later phase of the
commissioning, the transmission cable between the BSC and the BTS is properly connected.
Commission the BTS on the BSC side.
6 Optional Commissioning Tasks
The optional commissioning tasks are the VSWR check, loopback test check, settings of the DIP
switches on the board check, transmission between the BBU and the BSC on the BTS side check,
transmission between cascaded TRXs check, and TRX ring topology check.
7 FAQs for BTS Commissioning
This describes the fault symptoms and cause analysis in the BTS commissioning.
8 Commissioning Record Data Sheet
This describes the data sheet that is used to record the process and result of the BTS
commissioning.

diagnosis leads to the interruption of all carrier services of the GBTS. Therefore, you need
to perform the fault diagnosis when the GBTS services are in idle state or are segregated.
l When a Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) test is started on a TRX module that works
in co-module mode in a multi-mode base station, or a VSWR test is started on TRX modules
that work in different modes but share the same antenna system, services of both modes of
the base station are disrupted.
After one fault diagnosis operation is performed, the M2000 creates a fault diagnosis task and
displays the diagnosis progress. After the fault diagnosis is complete, you can obtain the fault
diagnosis report.
If you delete a fault diagnosis task, the corresponding diagnosis report is deleted accordingly.
If you restart the M2000 server, all fault diagnosis tasks and reports are deleted.
Procedure
Step 1 Choose Configuration > Auto Deployment > GBTS Auto Deployment to open the GBTS
Auto Deployment window.
.
Step 2 On the GBTS List tab page, select one or multiple commissioning tasks, and then click
Alternatively, right-click the tasks, and then choose Open Monitor Window from the shortcut
menu.
Step 3 Perform the fault diagnosis.
1.
In the Monitor window, select one object or select one alarm of a certain object from the
alarm list in the right pane.
2.
Right-click the object or alarm, and then choose Diagnose... from the shortcut menu to set
diagnosis parameters.
After the diagnosis parameters are set, a diagnosis task is added to the diagnosis task list.
The diagnosis task list is located in the lower part of the Monitor window.
3.
Right-click a fault diagnosis task in the diagnosis task list, and then choose Diagnosis
Report... from the shortcut menu to view the diagnosis results.
Double-click the alarm to be handled, and then click the link in Reason And Advice in the
displayed dialog box that shows the alarm details.

Prerequisite
The automatic service verification already starts, and you have not confirmed the completion of
the GBTS commissioning yet.
Context
During the service verification, the performance measurement period is the shortest
measurement period supported by the GBTS. By default, the shortest measurement period is 15
minutes. The involved performance counters are as follows:
l
If every performance counter related to the CS and PS services is once displayed as a value that
is not 0, the M2000 considers the service verification a success, and the commissioning task
automatically switches to Confirming completed. Otherwise, the service verification persists.
NOTE
The performance data collected for service verification is saved on theM2000 for 14 days. After 14 days,
the M2000 automatically deletes the data to release system resources.
Procedure
Step 1 Choose Configuration > Auto Deployment > GBTS Auto Deployment to open the GBTS
Auto Deployment window.
Step 2 On the GBTS List tab page, select one or multiple commissioning tasks, and then click
.
Alternatively, right-click the tasks, and then choose Open Service Verification Window from
the shortcut menu.
For details about the service verification window, see 3.10.1 Interface Description: GBTS
Commissioning.
Step 3 View the service verification results and perform corresponding operations.
The accumulation values of the counters, which are collected in the time range between the start
of the service verification and the restart of the commissioning or the confirmation of the
commissioning completion, are displayed in the service verification window.
l If is displayed in each counter value, you can infer that the GBTS service verification
succeeds. In this case, you can check and confirm the completion of the commissioning. For
details, see 3.5 Confirming the Completion of GBTS Commissioning.
l If is displayed in the value of a certain counter, you can infer that the services related to
this counter are running abnormally. In this case, you need to rectify the fault. If the system
output indicates that the PS services are abnormal but no PS services exist actually, you can
confirm the completion of the commissioning.

Context
1.
Principles of the VSWR test: In the mobile communication system, the voltage standing
wave ratio (VSWR) measures the mapping degree between the antenna and the feeder in
the BTS antenna system. If the input impedance of the antenna/feeder is inconsistent with
its characteristic impedance, the generated emission wave and incident wave shall overlap
on the feeder, forming the standing wave. An excessive VSWR affects the uplink/downlink
coverage of the carrier. In addition, the reflected power returns to the power amplifier of
the transmitter and may damage the power amplifier tube. Generally, the maximum value
of VSWR is 1.5. The BTS implements the antenna system detection by detecting the
VSWR. If the detected VSWR exceeds the preset alarm threshold, the BTS reports the
VSWR alarm.
2.
VSWR detection scheme: The reflected signals are extracted from the reverse coupler on
the antenna port, and then forwarded to the VSWR detection circuit for sampling and
calculating. In this way, the VSWR of the antenna system is generated.

High-precision VSWR detection scheme: To ensure a high precision, the VSWR detection
is based on a single channel and a single carrier, and the signals in mono-coding mode are
used. During the VSWR detection, the maximum transmit power is configured and the
downlink transmit power of the other carriers in the RF unit are shut down. This is to prevent
the interference from affecting the precision of the VSWR detection. The high-precision
VSWR detection interrupts the ongoing services on the RF unit for about three minutes.

CAUTION
l The BTS services are interrupted when the VSWR test is started. Therefore, perform this
operation with caution.
l When a Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) test is started on a TRX module that works
in co-module mode in a multi-mode base station, or a VSWR test is started on TRX modules
that work in different modes but share the same antenna system, services of both modes of
the base station are disrupted.

Context
Remarks on the interference measurement
1.
2.
The interference level algorithm varies with the manufacturer, so there is no significance
in comparison between the interference level of the antennas supplied by different
manufacturers.
3.
The interference level is measured only when system is in the idle state, so the inteference
level is used only as a reference counter for maintenance and problem locating. Whether
to solve the interference problem depends on KPIs rather than the interference level. When
the network KPIs are normal and there is no complaint, it is regarded that no interference
problem is found.
4.
If KPIs are affected by the deteriorated network quality, the associated personnel can locate
the problem according to interference level and "UBER".
(1) Pay attention to the interference level only when the uplink UBER changes.
(2) Judge whether the ratio of interference level 4 or 5 changes. If the ratio does not
change, the uplink interference is normal even when the KPIs change.
4-28
Issue 04 (2010-10-30)
GBTS
Commissioning Guide
(3) The inter- and intra-network interference can be located through the change in the
ratio of different interference levels.
(4) When the ratio of interference levels 4 and 5 is higher than 5% or the ratio of
interference levels 3, 4, and 5 is higher than 15%, interference problems must be
located.
NOTE
The interference level is reported in the RF RESOURCE INDICATION message from the BTS to the BSC
when the channels are in the idle state. It is classified into five levels. The threshold for each interference
level can be set on the LMT. The higher the level is, the stronger the interference is. If the interference
level of an idle channel is 4 or 5, there is interference.
l
NULL means that the BTS does not report the interference level. When a channel is in the uninstalled,
blocked, faulty, or occupied state, or is a main B channel, its interference level is NULL.
Procedure
Step 1 Confirm the interference level algorithm used by the BTS. If the interference level algorithm of
generation 2 is used, change it to the interference level algorithm of generation 1 for test.
1.
Log in to the Local Maintenance Terminal, click MML, and enter LST
GCELLSOFT in the command input box, and click Assist.
2.
Set Index Type, enter BTS Name or BTS Index of the tested BTS, and click Exec.
3.
In the execution result, check and ensure that Interfere Band Stat Algorithm Type is
INTBANI. If Interfere Band Stat Algorithm Type is INTBANII, run SET
GCELLSOFT to modify the algorithm type to INTBANI.
Step 2 Send idle timeslots to the tested cell. Idle timeslots means that the signals in the timeslots use
full timeslots and full power. Ensure that the test duration is set.
CAUTION
The measurement of the interference level, which is a realtime value, takes time about 30
seconds. Therefore, after the idle bursts are sent or the transmission is stopped, wait for 30
seconds till the interference level becomes stable.
1.
Run DSP CHNJAM to query and record the interference level of the tested cell.
2.
3.
Run DSP CHNJAM to query the interference level of the tested cell. If the interference
level after the transmission of the idle timeslots increases from 1 or 2 to 4 or 5, there is
passive intermodulation interference from the antenna, and the quality of the antenna must
be checked. If the interference level does not change after the transmission of idle timeslots,
there is no intermodulation interference from the antenna.

Procedure
When the transmission link is unavailable, the BTS commissioning consists of two phases.
In the initial phase of commissioning, the transmission cables between the BSC and the
BTS are not properly connected. In this phase, commission the BTS using the SMT at the
local end. In the later phase of commissioning, the transmission cables between the BSC
and the BTS are properly connected. In this phase, commission the BTS using the LMT at
the far end.

l
Currently, only the software of the GTMU, DRFU, GRFU, MRFU, DRRU, GRRU, MRRU,
USCU, and UBRI can be upgraded by using a USB storage device.
In IP over FE or IP over E1 mode, you can configure transmission data using a USB storage
device.
CAUTION
After onsite upgrading software and configuring transmission data using a USB storage device,
remove the USB storage device.
6.1.1 Preparing the USB Storage Device for Local GBTS Commissioning
You must ensure that the USB storage device is available for local GBTS commissioning.
6.1.2 Upgrading the GBTS Software and Downloading the Data Configuration File (on the
GBTS Side)
The GBTS supports direct downloading of the software and data configuration file from the
USB storage device. After the downloading, the GBTS automatically activates the software, and
then resets.
Context
l
Software upgrade using a USB storage device is supported since GSM BTS3000
V100R009C00SPC058.
Transmission data configuration using a USB storage device is supported since GSM
BTS3000 V100R009SPC072.
In IP over FE or IP over E1 mode, you can configure transmission data using a USB storage
device. This configuration is applicable in scenarios where operators do not provide DHCP
relay or do not accept the DHCP process.
In IP mode, this configuration can be used with the software upgrade using a USB storage
device. The prerequisite is that the active BTS software supports the transmission data
configuration using a USB storage device.
A USB storage device can contain only one upgrade software package and one
preconfiguration file.
Issue 04 (2010-10-30)
6-3
GBTS
Commissioning Guide
A USB storage device can contain the configuration file of only one BTS.
Procedure
Step 1 Ensure that the USB storage device with a LED is available. Requirement: When there is no
read or write operation on the USB storage device, the LED on the USB storage device is on;
when there is read or write operation on the USB storage device, the LED on the USB storage
device is blinking.
Step 2 Check the compatibility of the USB storage device with the BTS. Test method: Insert the USB
storage device into the USB port on the GTMU of a GBTS that runs normally, and wait 3 seconds.
If the LED on the USB storage device blinked once, the USB storage device is functional. If the
USB storage device fails the preceding test, change the USB storage device.
Step 3 Obtain the software package for the upgrade.
1.
Visit the website http://support.huawei.com and click Software to download the software
package.
2.
Decompress the software package to obtain the software package of the USB storage
device.
l When the transmission is unavailable, you can perform the upgrade using the USB storage device. In
this case, the GBTS loads software based on the preconfiguration file. If the preconfiguration file is
unavailable, software loading fails.
l The GBTSs using different configurations cannot use the same preconfiguration file. New
preconfiguration files must be created for the GBTSs of different configurations.
1.
Create a .txt file, and rename the file Precfg.ini. Edit the Precfg.ini file to add the following
contents into the Precfg.ini file.
[PRECONFIG]
ALL=GTMU|DRFU|GRFU
Where, ALL=XXXX is set by the user manually and it specifies the type of the board onto
which the software is to be loaded. In the preceding example, the software is to be loaded
onto the GTMU, DRFU, and GRFU.
NOTE
All letters are in capitals, and different board names are separated by "|". Do not add any comment
or press the space or TAB key before or after "=" or the name of each board.
2.
Step 5 Optional: Ensure that the transmission data configuration file is available if transmission data
needs to be configured. The file name is TranCfg.ini. Configuration engineers can prepare and
export the file using the CME.
Step 6 Store the files according to the following path.

l
The USB storage device for local commissioning is ready. For details, see 6.1.1 Preparing
the USB Storage Device for Local GBTS Commissioning.
Within three minutes after the GBTS starts, the GBTS cannot be upgraded or configured
by using a USB storage device. This is because the GBTS attempts to establish a connection
to the BSC within three minutes after the GBTS starts. During this three-minute period, the
GBTS does not invoke the configuration file in the USB storage device. After this threeminute period, the GBTS detects that its connection to the BSC fails. Then, the GBTS loads
board software based on the preconfiguration file and configures data based on the data
configuration file.
If the transmission is unavailable, you are advised to upgrade software and configure
transmission data for the GBTS using a USB storage device. If the transmission is available
and the BSC completes data configuration for the GBTS, you can insert a USB storage
device on the GBTS side. In this case, the GBTS loads software based on the actual
configuration, and the preconfiguration file is invalid.
If the transmission is unavailable, you can configure only transmission data instead of other
data. The GBTS can upgrade the software of the main control board instead of non main
control boards such as the DRFU, MRFU, and UTRP. After the GBTS is connected to the
BSC and data configuration is complete, the GBTS automatically upgrade the software of
non main control boards.
If the transmission is available but the RF modules are not powered on, the RF modules
cannot be upgraded. In this case, you are advised to disconnect the GBTS and then perform
the upgrade using a USB storage device.

Fault Symptoms
During the commissioning of NEs on the network, a large number of alarms with high severity
levels are reported, such as the alarms related to resetting, switchover, and disruption of
communication links.
Cause Analysis
During the commissioning of NEs on the network, a large number of alarms are reported on
certain NEs because of engineering operations. These alarms are cleared automatically after the
engineering operations are complete. To ensure network monitoring and improve network OM
efficiency, Huawei provides the engineering alarm filtering function to manage the alarms.
Handling Suggestions
1.
Log in to the M2000, and then choose Monitor > Alarm Setting > Maintenance Mode

Check whether the imported GBTS parameters on the M2000 meet the actual
requirements. If the requirements are met, you need not perform any operation.
Otherwise, perform Step 2.
2.
Delete the imported commissioning tasks of the GBTS from the M2000.
3.
Delete the deployment information about the other GBTSs from the GBTS
deployment list to ensure that the deployment information about this GBTS is correct.
If the deployment information about other GBTSs are not deleted and you import the
modified deployment list to the M2000, a large number of error messages are
displayed, indicating that duplicate GBTS information exists. This problem occurs
because the deployment information about all GBTSs except the GBTSs where errors
occur is already imported to the M2000.

Fault Cause
Handling Suggestion
Fault Symptom
Alarms related to the E1/T1 link are reported, or the upper link is faulty.
Analysis
When the E1 links are faulty, the cause may be one of the following:
l
Handling Suggestion
1.
Check the connections and connectors at both ends of the E1 link. Ensure that the
connections are reliable and the connectors are functional.
2.
3.
Perform a physical loopback test to check whether the transmission of the E1 cable is normal
on the BTS side.
4.
Check the transmission channels to ensure that all the transmission channels are available.
The detection method in this example is applicable to check for the improper E1 connection between the
BTS and the BSC or the improper E1 connection on the BSC side. This detection method also can be used
to check the improper T1 connection.
The crossed pair connection refers to the incorrect RX and TX connections between two pairs
of E1 cables, as shown in Figure 7-2.

Perform the loopback method on the BSC side to check for crossed pair connection. Perform
different steps according to different E1 connection modes.
NOTE
Loopback test: Set the port on the BTS side to the physical loopback mode. Send the test data, which carries
the E1 port number, to the TX end of the E1 from the BSC side. After the loopback, check whether the
received port information is the same as the transmitted one. If yes, you can infer that the E1 cable is
correctly connected. If not, you can infer that the crossed pair connection occurs.

Example Two: Check for UELP Faults Through Physical Loopback Test
NOTE
The physical loopback test in this example is applicable to check for the improper E1 connection on the
BTS side.
1.
Ensure that the E1/T1 cable is securely connected to the OUTSIDE port on the UELP, and
that the connectors are in working condition. If the connector is damaged, replace it.
2.
Ensure that the E1 transfer cable is securely connected to the INSIDE port on the UELP
and the E1/T1 port on the GTMU, and that the connectors are in sound condition. If the
connector is damaged, replace it.
3.
Perform the physical loopback test and troubleshoot the fault in the UELP.
(1) Perform a physical loopback on the BTS side. In general, for a pair of E1s/T1s
connecting the BTS and BSC through the DDF, port A0 is connected to port C0, and
port B0 is connected to port D0. In the loopback test, disconnect port A0 from port

the GTMU, and ensure that the connection is proper.
CAUTION
After the physical loopback test, set the E1/T1 at the DDF on the BTS side from physical
loopback to normal connection. Ensure that the connections are correct.
Fault Symptom
An MS fails to find the network.
Cause Analysis
The possible causes are as follows:
l
Cell parameters such as CGI, BCCH, TA, and BSIC are improperly configured.
The MS does not support the frequency band of this base station.
The downlink signals are weak. Therefore, the MS is unable to locate the cell.
The downlink interference is strong. The MS is unable to locate the cell or receive the
correct downlink system information.
When the MS fails to find the network, pay attention to the output power of the local cell and the radio
network coverage.
Fault Symptom
Service dialing failure may occur in either of the following cases:
