Thursday, June 12, 2014, 1:00-2:30 pm (program will start prior to 1:30) Fracking & U.S.

Energy
Policy Hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," is a controversial method of extracting previously
unavailable oil and gas reserves from the ground by fracturing rock by injecting pressurized
fluids. Proponents claim that it opens up vast amounts of natural gas within the U.S. and could
play a key role in the United States gaining energy independence within the not too distant
future. Opponents claim that the chemicals used in fracking represent a significant
environmental risk to ground water and other elements of the environment. Join Active Minds as
we explore the risks and benefits of fracking and put it into the broader context of U.S. Energy
Policy. This Active Minds program is brought to you byHealth to You (H2U). Location: Swedish

Old Which is more miraculous: Great music by a precocious pre-teen, or great music by a
master well into his 80s? That's tough to answer, since a charming minuet by a 7-year-old
Mozart is as difficult to fathom as a glorious Psalm composed by 86-year-old Heinrich Schutz
back in 1671. In this inspiring Active Minds presentation, we'll sample mature-sounding works
penned by Beethoven, Rossini, Schubert, Mendelssohn and others before they were old
enough to shave, and we'll bask in the serene beauty of autumnal masterworks by such
octogenarians as Verdi, Vaughan Williams and Strauss. As baseball great Satchel Paige

Wednesday, July 16, 2014, 1:30-2:30 pm Painters of Modern Life In 1874 a group exhibition in
Paris shocked the world. The paintings on display were not made in the studio but outdoors,
and looked unfinished for their loose sketchy brushstrokes. One art critic used the derogatory
term 'impressions' not knowing the effect of his statement. Today the impressionist paintings by
Monet, Renoir, Degas and others enjoy an unmatched popularity. This program will focus on the
revolutionary aspects of Impressionism such as the new treatment of color and light and the
shift from historical subject matter to aspects of modern life that seem not to have lost any of

(program at 2:00) Colombia: A Powder Keg? The government of Colombian President Juan
Manuel Santos has been challenged by a number of delicate and dangerous situations, most
prominently the peace talks with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
Colombia continues to experience high levels of violence between leftist rebels, right-wing
paramilitary groups, as well as between drug cartels and the government forces trying to quell
their activity. Extreme economic disparities and a Free Trade Agreement with the United States
whose long-term costs and benefits for Colombians are as of yet unknown add to the already
great uncertainty of Colombia's path forward. Join Active Minds as we examine these tensions
