The most important gods and goddesses of ancient Greece, called Olympians, lived
together in an enormous palace at the top of Mt. Olympus, the highest mountain in
Greece. Great walls, too step for climbing, protected the palace. Gigantic one-eyed
Cyclopes, the Olympians mason, built this on the same plan as royal palaces on earth.
At the southern end, just behind the Council hall and overlooking the famous Greek cities
of Athens, Thebes, Sparta, and Corinth were the private apartments of King Zeus, the
father-god, and Queen Hera, the mother-goddess. In the northern end are kitchen,
banquet hall, armory, workshops and servants quarters. In between was a square court
open to the sky, and private rooms on each side where the other five Olympian gods and
five Olympian goddesses stay. Beyond the kitchen servants quarters stood cottages for
the smaller gods, sheds of chariots, stables for horses, kennels for hounds and a sort of

zoo where the Olympians kept their sacred animals, like the bear, lion, tiger, eagle, crane,
