a difference in your life
The first week of May is the traditional observance of Teacher
Appreciation Week, and its one of
the easiest topics for me to
address. I truly value and appreciate the work of the teachers and
other professionals who are in our
schools helping our kids learn.
I think there is no higher calling
than to be a teacher. Some mistakenly think that if youre smart in a
subject, you can teach. While
deep content knowledge helps a
good teacher be better, teaching is
a complex task. Successful teachers like to work with kids. They
have an understanding of child
development and learning styles as
well as classroom management.
They know how to develop lessons
for todays classrooms that offer
multiple ways for students to show
their learning. From writing stories,
to putting together multi-media
projects, to dramatic reenactments
teachers meet kids where they

are and move them ahead to reach

academic goals.
But, its not just academics. Our
teachers also are there, alongside
parents and family members, helping children become better citizens; people who are ready to
become the doctors and medical
professionals, civic and business
leaders, inventors and entrepreneurs, carpenters and welders, and
yes, teachers for tomorrow.
You cant sugar coat it. Being a
teacher in Wisconsin has been
pretty tough these past few years.
Take-home pay has been cut. The
decades-old system that provided
them a voice in their work environment has been torn apart. Too
many have retired or left the profession. Teachers have faced lots
of change and new demands on
their time. And, the political backdrop in Madison has been exceedingly difficult. Its no wonder
research indicates that fewer high
school graduates want to go into
education.
But I am optimistic. The work of

Beginning Tuesday, May 5, Boerner Botanical Gardens

will offer free admission to Milwaukee County Residents on
the first Tuesday of each month. The Botanical Gardens,
Milwaukees Living Museum, is renowned as Milwaukee
Countys horticultural showplace. The Botanical Gardens is
located at 9400 Boerner Drive in Whitnall Park.
Everything will be coming up roses for the community,
said County Executive Chris Abele. First Tuesdays at the
Gardens will allow families who might not otherwise have
been able to visit, to come and enjoy the day in this beautiful
setting.
Garden hours are 8 a.m.6 p.m., seven days a week.
Regular admission to the Botanical Gardens is $5.50 for
adults age 18 and up; $4.50 for students of any age with IDs,
Milwaukee County seniors age 60 and up with IDs, and people with disabilities; and $3.50 for youths age 6-17.
Admission the first Tuesday of the month, from May 5Sept.
1, is free to Milwaukee County Residents with proof of residency. Admission to the gardens requires wearing the official
daily wristband.
The Boerner Botanical Gardens Arboretum occupies over
1000 acres in Whitnall Park and the adjoining Root River
Parkway. The Arboretum has received Level II Accreditation
from the Morton Register. The accreditation program recognizes arboreta for achieving professional standards to
advance the planting and conservation of trees.

Dear Dr. Winter, I would like to inquire about the
cost of mini implants. I actually just learned about
them after finding out I need a partial for 6 missing
teeth in a row on my upper left. I am interested in
finding out your mini implant prices without
extractions, bone grafting, or X-Rays. How much
difference in price is there from a three teeth bridge
to a 6-tooth bridge? Also, are your mini implant
procedures done the same day?
Dear Jean, mini-implants are not used for posterior
bridgework. The narrow diameter of the implant
(1.8mm wide) and the hard chewing would lead to
failure of the mini-implants and the bridgework!
There may be some dentists that are willing to do a
large bridge with mini-implants but that would never
be done at Hampton Dental Associates. Again
making a large bridge and anchoring it to very small
pins would lead to the bridge being pushed left and
right during chewing. That is why the FDA has
approved mini-implants for long-term use for
retaining dentures and partial dentures.
Another complicating factor is that the bone in the
upper jaw is not very dense compared to the lower
arch. Maxillary bone is like Styrofoam or balsa wood
compared to pine or oak in the lower jaw.
Mini--implants are used to retain dentures or
partials or to hold on to a single crown in the lower
front of the mouth. Other than that you would require
a minimum of 3 implants for replacing 6 teeth. I
would be happy to discuss traditional implant
bridges, extractions, grafting and any other treatment
options if you wish to schedule a comprehensive
examination and x-ray visit. Giving fees without
seeing x-rays or examining your bite and adjacent
teeth would be guessing as several factors go into
calculating the best treatment options. If you still
have teeth in the upper arch and there are 6 teeth that
need to be removed it is probable that there are issues

on the other side of the mouth as well that need to

be diagnosed and addressed. Sometimes implant
options can be discussed to address all of your
problems at one time. I am sorry you are having
problems and are faced with tooth loss. Please take

year graduating studio art students create
and display a collection of original art. This
year twenty students, including Audrey
Moore, created unique collections that were
displayed in the Augustana Teaching
Museum of art from April 24 to May 24.
The annual spring exhibition of senior
student work is part of their Senior Inquiry
capstone project. Every art and graphic
design major creates a coherent body of
original art work for the senior exhibition,
concentrating in one medium or related
media. Weekly working sessions and periodic group critiques with faculty in relevant

be functional, long-lasting and beautiful.
DON'T design just for today, but look to the
future as well. Unless you are willing to spend
$50,000 every five years, look for styles and
materials that will last for the long haul. Older
homeowners may want to make adjustments
now that address potential mobility issues down

DO work with what you have. A complete
demolition and renovation is not always necessary to achieve the desired results. Only invest
in major changes if something is not working

2015 schedule
Neighborhood Concert Series, a
series of performances by MYSO's
high-quality student ensembles, held at
the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, 325
West Walnut Street, Milwaukee.
Designed for school children and open
to the community, this series allows students from City of Milwaukee schools
with limited arts programming to gain
critically important exposure to music.
The performances also include an educational component, teaching young
audiences about the music, composers
and the instruments being played.
These concerts are free and open to
the public; however, seating is limited
