THE MASTER OF YOUR DOMAIN
Be prepared: you may have to go to the ends of the World (Wide Web) to achieve it.
All Iwanted to (O) ..do .. was to get an Internet domain name of my (16) .. the part of an
e-mail address to the right of the @ and the part of the World Wide Web address that
typically follows www. The (17) .. is that Lewis is a (18) .. common name and Lewis.com
(19) .. already taken.
So, (20) ..millions of Internet users before me, I (21) .. looking elsewhere (22) a
domain I could call home the Internet equivalent of 40 acres, where I (23) .. grow
electronic mail, raise a small herd of web pages and maybe someday open a little electronic
collage industry of my own.
It (24) .. to be technically difficult for average computer users to get (25) .. own personal
Internet domain names. (26) .. if you could figure out (27) .. to do it, registering a domain
name was free and good names were plentiful.
No (28) ..! The Internet is now the worlds fastest growing economy, and the
commercialisation of the Internet (29) .. created a frenzy for domain names. An Internet
domain name is (30) .. just an equivalent of a telephone number and mailing address but
also a status symbol.

The procession began and we went singing and dancing (17) .. the street watched by
crowds of people. Balloons flew up in the air and everyone was having (18) .. wonderful
time.
Just then I realised that my young brother, who had (19) .. with me to the procession, was
(20) .. longer with me. I asked one of my friends to help me find him. It was a difficult thing
to do because everyone was dressed up and many of them were also wearing masks over
their (21)

Suddenly, I saw him. I could (22) .. believe my eyes. He was sitting on the very first float
right next to the King of the Carnival. He (23) .. smiling and enjoying every minute of it.
I shouted to him (24) .. because there was (25) much noise, he did not hear me at first.
I kept (26) .. shouting until he finally (27) ..me and waved. I yelled out to (28) .. that he
should wait for me at the end of the street when the (29) .. was over. He nodded his head
(30) .. agreement and went back to waving and smiling at the crowd.
SPLENDID SPAS OF ASIA
Lying (0) ..on. .. a bed almost on the edge (16) .. a cliff, with a stupendous ocean view and
the (17) .. of waves, aches and pains are soothed away (18) .. expert hands. Only two
steps (19) .. needed to reach the private pool, (20) .. seems to merge with the ocean.
Such a scenario is (21) .. longer a fantasy (22) an increasingly popular reality in Asia
for many stressed out businessmen and visitors from all (23) .. the world in search of that
peaceful time and space (24) .. their body and mind.
In the last four years, at (25) .. 17 hotel spas have opened in South East Asia to (26)
this need. The tropical climate of the region and its reliable sunshine make for an ideal spa
setting. Picturesque environments together (27) .. a series of rejuvenating treatments
bring the desired result. The Asian spa resorts have acquired a formidable reputation for
their professional services as (28) .. as for the decor of their large treatment rooms.
Visitors relax with Thai music and soak in the warm tones of the room. As all these take (29)
.. in individual rooms, precious privacy is guaranteed, a rare privilege often absent from
other spas (30) .. guests share rooms or changing areas.
UNSOLVED MYSTERIES
I am going to visit one of the most famous prehistoric temples in Europe Stonehenge. Ted,
(0) ..whose.. father is an archaeologist, has invited me. Dr Millers, Teds father, wants extra
help (16) .. the work that is going to be (17) .. in the summer.
Stonehenge, (18) .. means hanging stones, is said to be an open-air temple where the
primitive people of the area worshipped the Sun-god. It faces the rising sun (19) .. a
midsummer day.
The temple is made of huge stones laid (20) .. in a circle. There are two circles; the outer
circle is made of sandstone and the inner circle is made of bluestone. On top of (21) ..
pillar is a horizontal block of stone. In the (22) .. of this circle there was a place for the
worshipping to take place.
I have (23) .. wondered how (24) giant stones were transported to that site as none of
them are from there. They have come from (25) .. area many miles away. Many theories
have been put forward (26) .. how the temple came to be there. (27) ..theory is creatures
from outer (28) .. visited the area that living (29) .. built the temple. They say that
because the stones are so big they could not have been (30) to the site of the temple in

the ordinary way. Who knows? The work that will be done in the summer should give us
more information.
WHO IS AFRAID OF BACK PAIN?
About 80 percent of the American population is hit with back pain (O) at least once in their
lives, and half of (16) ..can expect a revisit (17) ..three years. The lower back, the socalled lumbar region, accounts (18) most of those incidents and (19) some
11,430,000 Americans to the doctor in 1996.
The pain (20) .. over for 80 percent of us (21) .. 10 to 14days, (22) .. thats still a lot of
suffering and lost time.
Fortunately, treatment continues (23) .. advance. The last decade (24) .. seen major
progress in the understanding of back pain, of (25) .. we can avoid it and (26) we can
do when its slaps us down.
Back pain (27) not be such a problem if our progenitors hadnt given (28) .. going on
all four limbs. Certainly, weve evolved since we started (29) on two feet, but obviously
we (30) .. have some evolving to do.
JUST IN TIME
The wind was stronger (0) than it had been earlier. I had
(16) .. been out in such a strong storm before. As we drove rapidly through the woods the
branches swayed backwards and forwards above (17) . . Lightning flashed. I wish we
werent out in (18) storm, I said to John. The words were hardly out of (19) mouth
when a branch from a tree came crashing down across the road in front of us. We leapt out
of the car and ran quickly (20) .. the fallen branch. We had to move it, otherwise we (21)
not be able to continue our journey. We pulled and pushed until we were finally able to
move it (22) the side of the road. We got back into the car and drove on down the road.
We had to get to the house (23) time. Lord Brenton, (24) was dying, was the (25)
person who could give us the information we needed (26) .. we could catch the
murderers. He was a key witness. At last we reached our destination. The house (27) .. lit
up inside like a Christmas (28) .. . He must (29) .. be alive, I thought, as we jumped out of
the car and ran up the steps to (30) entrance of the huge Victorian house. I think weve
made it, I called to John.
ITALYS MOST POETIC CITY
Venice has been an inspiration (O) for writers, artists and musicians throughout history. In
the 15th (16) .. it was the worlds (17) .. port. Since then it has built up an astonishing
collection of art and architecture (18) .. to its trade with the East.
The city (19) .. its visitors incredible sights. (20) .. not believe those (21) .. say Venice is
a museum. This is still a living city full of joys. Venice (22) .. good in any light. The sun

makes the domes sparkle, but even on a grey, (23) .. day the city can be extremely
romantic.
And (24) .. it gets overcrowded, (25) .. is an easy escape to the other islands in the Venice
Gulf (26) .. brightly-coloured houses are a photographers dream.
In a curious way, Venice is a model city for the future; it is free from cars and the (27) ..
way to get around is by public transport or (28) .. foot. This one fact alone (29) .. it a
unique city, one (30) .. traffic noise. The creation of genius indeed.
PARTY TIME
Joe called (0) for Sandra at half past seven. The barbecue (16) to begin at eight
but they had decided to get there about half past eight.
Sandra had opened her wardrobe (17) . had looked through her clothes. She had spent a
long (18) .. trying to decide what to wear. As it was summer time, she had (19)
.. chosen a flowered skirt (20) a short-sleeved blouse. She had combed (21) ..
hair into the (22) modern style and tied it with a bright red ribbon.
(23) . , as she now sat in the car waiting for Joe to start the engine, she began to have
doubts. Was she (24) formally dressed for the occasion? What if everyone else came in
casual clothes? Should she have worn a pair of jeans instead? Joe tried his best to assure her
that she looked beautiful and that a lot of girls (25) ..be wearing skirts and blouses like
her. Sandra continued to be uncertain.
In the end, Sandra got out of the car and went back (26) . the house. She quickly (27)
.. into a pair of jeans and a blue T-shirt. She also put on a pair of shoes (28) . matched
her clothes. Now she felt (29) ..comfortable. She would be able to enjoy (30)
without feeling the odd one out.

DEPARTMENT STORES
In 1846 an Irish immigrant in New York named Alexander Stewart opened a business called
the Marble Dry-Goods Palace. By (0) doing. so, he gave the world something
completely new the department store. Before this, no-one (16) . tried to bring
together such a wide range of goods (17) . a single roof. The business did very (18)
. . It expanded rapidly and soon had (19) . staff of two thousand. For Stewart
even that was not enough, (20) .. . In 1862 he moved to an eight-storey building nearby,
(21) . he renamed A.T. Stewarts Cast-Iron Palace. It was, (22) . for many years
would remain, the largest shop in the world.
Others followed Stewarts example and soon there were stores (23) . his in many major
cities in the United States. We dont (24) . when people started calling them
department stores. The expression wasnt used in print (25) . 1893, when it appeared
in Harpers magazine, but the way that it is used there (26) . it clear that it was already
widely understood. (27) . is certain is that department stores completely changed the
shopping experience for millions of people. They offered not only an enormous range of
goods, (28) . also levels of
comfort, luxury and excitement previously unknown to customers. Almost from the start they
had restaurants, toilets and many (29) . facilities, so (30) . was no need to go
elsewhere for anything.
