    The Crime Branch investigated complaints about irregularities in the 2005 Kerala University Assistant Grade-II examination. They found evidence of methodical distortion of the selection process, including leaking of the question paper, valuation of answer sheets at the private press where they were printed without separating identity details, missing answer sheets, issuing of duplicate hall tickets, and destruction of documents. The total marks were also scaled down and interview weightage was increased in violation of rules, facilitating corruption and nepotism in the selection of 175 candidates out of 43,358 applicants.

    AnuS.NairemergedfirstintherecentKeralaCivilServicesexaminationforselectiontothepostofDeputyCollector,RevenueDepartment.
    In2005,hehadfailedintheKeralaUniversity(KU)AssistantGradeIIexaminationdespitescoringhigh.Itspeaksvolumesaboutthe
    fairnessofthetesttakenby43,358universitygraduatesfor350jobvacanciesinJulythatyear.
    Subsequently,175wereappointed.TheunemploymentrateinKeralain2005wasanestimated19percentandindignantcandidates,manyof
    whomwererejecteddespitehighscores,movedthecourtagainstthedubiousselectionprocess.
    TheCrimeBranch,whichinvestigatedtheircomplaintsatthebehestoftheHighCourt,hasnowrevealedhowthehopesofmanyeligible
    younghopefulshadbeendashedforthebenefitoftheprivilegedfewfavouredbythoseattheKUshelm.
    Itsdraftcharge,recentlyapprovedbythegovernmentforprosecution,detailsthemethodicaldistortionoftheselectionprocesstofacilitate
    corruptionandnepotism.
    Thequestionpaperintheopticalmarkrecognition(OMR)formatwasleaked.Theanswersheetswerevaluedattheprivatepresswherethey
    wereprinted.
    Answersheets
    Theanswersheetsofthecandidatesearmarkedforappointmentweresentforvaluationwithoutseparatingthepartdetailingtheiridentity.
    Atleast46answersheetswerereportedmissingbyevaluatorsatthepress,whoalsotalliedthefinalmarksincludingthatforthewrittentest.
    Somecandidateswereissuedtwohalltickets.
    Theattendancesheetsofcandidatesatexaminationcentres,nominalrolls,weredestroyedwhentheirregularitybecamepublic.
    Theanswersheetsweredestroyed.Theanswerkeywaspublishedbelatedly.
    Interviewscore
    Totalmarkswasscaleddownfrom100to75andthescorefortheinterviewwasuppedfrom20to25inviolationofuniversitystatutesand
    courtorders,therebyopeningthedoorformalpractice.Theinterviewboardrarelyhadquorumwhenitmet.TheKUhadcollectedRs.43lakh
    asexaminationfeefromthecandidates.
    TheCrimeBranchsubmittedatrancheofdocumentsincourtasevidenceandlistedscoresofpersons,includingcandidates,aswitnessesin
    itschargesheet.
