Lesson Plan for Monopoly

Spreadsheet game.

Set:
Day 1 Explain the purpose of a spreadsheet. Discuss some reasons why we would need to
use a spreadsheet. Explain to the students that they are going to be employed in the real-
estate business. Go over the rules for playing Monopoly and explain to the students that
instead of cash we will be writing checks and recording them in a check ledger.
Demonstrate how to write checks and record them in a ledger. Pass out folders and have
the students write their names on the folder. Have students add columns to the folder for
recording the Properties, Mortgages, Houses, Hotels, Get out of Jail card, Whose turn it
is, and where you stopped each day.
Day 2 Have the students start playing. Money for fines and taxes go to free parking to be
won if a player lands on that property.

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to create a spreadsheet from information gained while
playing Monopoly.
2. Students will create column headers in the spreadsheet; Date, check number,
name, amount of check, amount of deposit, and balance.
3. Students will enter the checks that they wrote while playing Monopoly as data for
the spreadsheet.
4. Students will create a formula to add deposits and subtract their debits leaving a
correct balance for each row.
5. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the vocabulary used with a spreadsheet.
6. Students will demonstrate the ability to resize the cells they are working in.
7. Students will demonstrate an ability to use a premade formula in a spreadsheet.
8. Students will demonstrate the ability to open a pre-saved assignment from a
network folder.
9. Students will demonstrate the ability to save a spreadsheet on a network drive.
10. Students will demonstrate the ability to change the format of text within a
spreadsheet.
11. Students will demonstrate the ability to use a fill series function in a spreadsheet.
12. Students will demonstrate the ability to add and delete rows and columns.

Modeling: Demonstrate to the students how to enter data into a spreadsheet and to add or
delete any rows or columns that are needed. Demonstrate to the students how to write a
formula and how to use the fill series function to copy that formula into other cells.

Monitoring: The instructor should move around the room offering help and instruction to
the students while they are creating their spreadsheets and writing their formulas. The
instructor should evaluate the competence of the students to create a spreadsheet by
grading the spreadsheets for accuracy according to a premade rubric.
