AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT- To study the dynamic balance machine and to test
weather the machine is balanced or not.
INTRODUCTION Dynamic balance machine has been designed to allowed to
check experimentally the normal method of calculating the position of counter
balancing weight in rotating mass systems.
DESCRIPTION- The apparatus basically consists of a steel shaft mounted in ball
bearings in a stiff rectangular main frame. A set of four blocks of different of weights
are provided and may be clamed in any position on the shaft, they can also be
easily position on the shaft, they can also be easily detached from the shaft .
A dish carrying a circular protractor scale is fitted to one side of the rectangular
frame shaft carries a disc and rim of the this disc is grooved to take light cord
provided with two cylindrical metal containers of exactly the same weight . A scale
is fitted to the lower member of the main frame and when used in conjunction with
the circular protractor scale, allows the exact longitudinal and angular position of
each adjustable block to be determine .
The shaft is driven by a 230V single phase 50 cycles electric motor, mounted
under the main frame , through a round section rubber belt for static balancing of
individual weights the main frame is rigidly attached to the support frame by nut
bolts & in this position the motor driving belt is removed . For dynamic balancing of
rotating mass system the main frame is suspended from the support frame by two
short links such that the main frame and the supporting frame are in the same
plane .
PROCEDURE - Static balancing The main frame is rigidly fixed at right angle to
the support frame and drive belt is removed . The value of weight for each block is
determine by clamping each block in turn on the shaft and with the cord and
container system suspended over the protractor disc , the number of steel balls ,
which are of equal weights are placed into one at the containers to exactly balanced
the blocks on the shaft. When the block comes to a stationary horizontal position ,
The numbers of balls N will give the value of weight for the block .
For finding out Wr during static balancing proceed as follows

1- The belt was removed and attached to the main frame to support frame rigidly
and right angles
2- Screw the combined hook to the pulley with groove .
3- Attach the cord ends of the pans to the above combined hook .
4- Attach block no 1 to the shaft at any convenient position .
5- Put steel balls in one of the pans to make the block horizontally.
6- Numbers of balls give the Wr value of block 1 .
7- Repeat procedure for other three blocks.
Dynamic balancing- Using the value of Wr obtained as above , if the angular
position and planes of rotations of two or possible three of the blocks are known ,We
can calculate the position of other blocks for balance of the complete system . From
the calculations , the student finally clamps all the blocks Into the shaft in their
appropriate positions ,Replaces the motor belt , transfers the main frame to its
hanging positions and then by running the motor upto speed ,can verify that this
calculations are correct and the blocks are perfectly balanced . If by chance, we go
wrong in the calculations, then the fact that the blocks are not dynamically
balanced is at once revealed by the vibration of the suspended assembly .
Experiments-T o statically and dynamically balance a four plane rotating mass
system .Block no- 3 is two be positioned sixty degree , clock wise and loads alongs
the shaft from block no-1.Determine the angular and longitudinal positions of blocks
2 & 4 for perfect balance.
CALCULATIONS(a ) Determinations of Wr for each block
Block no- 1 : W1r1 = 583.526 gm cm
Block no- 2 : W2r2 = 583.526 gm cm
Block no- 3 : W3 r3 = 574.443 gm cm
Block no- 4 : W4r4= 583.6 gm cm
( b ) The polygon of forces is drawn to determine the angular positions of block no (
2 )& ( 4 ).
( c )To calculate the longitudinal positions of block no ( 2 ) & ( 4 ). Let the distance
from block no ( 2 ) be l and m respectively from block no ( 4 ).

Ball ( small size ) = 10.3 gm

Ball ( Big size ) = 28.29 gm
Radius of the pulley = 3.48 gm cm

Solving q ( 1 ) q ( 2 )
l = 0.869 = 0.87 cm
m = 11.72 cm
CONCLUSION:- Fitting the blocks on the shaft in position where l = 0.87 cm and m
= 11.72 cm gives the balanced system .
