EYESIGN IS JUST AN ICING IN A CAKE

When I was beginning in the sport as a new member of San Francisco Racing
Pigeon Club in the early 90s. Eyesign is a tool used for breeding by Fenglin Lin and
Tom Foley (San Mateo,CA). The full eye and the perfect eye should be mated
together to enhance your chances of breeding better sky warriors. Two perfect
eyes can be mated together but must avoid breeding two full eyed pigeons together.
Full eye characterizes the racer quality while the perfect eye characterizes the
racer and breeder genetic qualities of the sky warrior.
A full eye is characterized by the color of the whole iris constituent
protruding up to the margin of the pupil or the margin of the circle of correlation.
(The circle of correlation is the circle just after the circle of the pupil).

Perfect eye is characterized by the clear distinction of the pupil , circle of

correlation and the iris. See 03SFR 0527 eye below.

Through the years I have seen the eyes of the champion racers and champion
breeders. My simple conclusion was that they are a combination of a full eye and
perfect eye sky warriors. Not all of such wonderful eyed pigeons can be a
champion racer and better yet champion breeders. With at least three to five
thousands sky warriors bred every year in the SFR Club you can rest assured
there will only be at least four champion birds in one year which includes the two
overall champion birds in every old bird and young bird season of the club.
You will be a happy camper if you have one of them in a season. Nevertheless
having all the Champion Birds (Champion Cock, Champion Hen and Champion
Overall in one young bird or old bird season is a great fulfillment in the sport
of pigeon racing in the San Francisco Bay area.

Shipping night San Francisco, AU Convention held in Cathedral Hill Hotel

(Van Ness, San Francisco ,Ca) October 1996. The entry registration and counter
marking continued through the late night. I was working hand in hand with Dino
DErcole (San Mateo,Ca), Jim Heiser (Hayward ,Ca), Craig Centis (Redwood
City,Ca) and Tom Colleti (Millbrae,Ca). Tom was a big help at that time although
he is just a new member of the SFR Club . I was busy concentrating on checking
and double checking individual birds registry entered by the handler in their race
sheet. And in some cases triple checking with the help of my good friend and Bay
Cities Combine Race Secretary the late Jim Heiser ( Hayward,Ca). If my
recollection serves me right, a total of 2,500 birds were shipped that night .
The next fancier to sit in front of my table after John Belandi (Pleasant Hill,Ca)
was no other than Brad Laverne (Castro Valley). Brad Laverne was a famous Bay
area grader and selector although he wanted to be called a Researcher, his fame
spread like wild fire in the 50 states of the U.S.A. and beyond its borders, Specially
when he was elected President of the American Racing Pigeon Union.
While he was sitting in front of me he was asking me questions about the pigeon
eye. But a different kind of eyesign. I was not able to gasp all that he said because
Im busy checking out the race forms. It was indeed a very stressful night. When
Chic Brooks approached him with a styrofoam filled with hot food. Brad asked my
permission if he can eat in the table while he sits. Since it was really getting late at
night, I nodded and he nodded back. I was hungry my self. The San Francisco
Pigeon boys ate a very late dinner in one of the bar /diner in the near by area.
I received a special gift from Brad Laverne, a highly spirited white grizzle cock.
The bird was given to me through my good friend Lu Stephens who buys his feeds
through Brad Laverne. Since I was concentrating on my Stan Culligan Verbruggens
at that time. I gave the bird to Eryck Madrigal (Fremont,Ca) A Filipino flyer
starting in the sport at that time. He was recommended by my late dear friend Phil
Barerra (Tracy,Ca.). So I also gave him a one eyed red recessive Verbruggen cock.
A proven breeder by Stan Culligan.
It was not after Brads book was published after his death that I put a special
attention to what he is trying to impart during that special moment with him in
Cathedral Hill Hotel. HLREO (High Level Laverne Theory Rapid Eye Orientation)
also become a big part in selecting excellent sky warriors for breeding and racing
in my loft. HLREO is also what I look for on my visit with different San Francisco
Bay area lofts (like the lofts of Dino DErcole,Fenglin Lin, Gunther Grosser, Alfredo
Ramirez, Leo Gomez ,George and Jan Vincent So (the father and son team) and in
my memorable visit in the Philippines during the 2005 Grand Eye Ball of Pifers
International held in the residence of Robert Oliveros (Makati, Philippines).

I was amazed when I visited the loft of Josua Vizcarra (GG

Cruz,Baclaran,MMla.Philippines) Pifers brother. He showed me his best racer cock
with the so called HLREO. His Pilipino term was duling (cross eyed pigeon, it
was so termed because when you look at the pigeons eyes they seemed to be crossed
eyed). But in reality it was the extreme movement of the pupil that made it look like
it is crossed-eyed.

Through Joshua I was able to visit the magnificent loft of Thirgie Celis (Pasay
City,Philippines) a PHA (Philippine Homing Association) member. He had this
foundation cock with a blue gray eye with a very high level of HLREO.

I was also fortunate to handle an excellent long distance breeding specimen. It

was a gorgeous hen named Nelsons egg from a pair of foundation Elgarico
Bastins of my good friend and Pifers brother Nelson Elgarico (Lodi,Ca). This hen
was not flown but directly put to stock by Rudy Tan (Burlington Loft).

Rene was the loft manager of Rudy Tan. Owner of Burlington Sock Factory
(Makati,Philippines). Although Rudy Tan was in a business meeting at that time.
After checking the old birds we were served with some refreshments. I told Rene to
concentrate on this hen (Nelsons Egg) mate her to different fine cocks in the loft
and built a dynasty off this hen.
In the recent update of Nelson Elgarico (Sept, 2009) regarding the
performances of the descendants of this hen. Proved to be truly amazing. Rene heed
my advice and the descendants of this hen continued to win races for Burlington
Loft. Specially in the longer tough South races of the Philippine race course.

Eye of Barcos Princess

This gorgeous foundation quality hen was owned by Richard Banzon (South
SanFrancisco,Ca) who imported birds directly from Jos Vercammen, Gaby
Vandenabeele, Ad Schaerlaeckens, Dick Van Dijck ,Cools Blancke, Koopman, etc .
During my special loft visit with Leo Gomez (Daly City,Ca) to RMC Loft, August
2009. Leo Gomez noticed the eye of Barcos Princess. He noted that this hen can
be mated to almost any quality cock and produce excellent birds. Same remarks
that I shared with Richard during the time I was taking Barcos Princess eye. She
was the dam of SPYKER winner of 1st 350 miles Mercedes Classics, 500 p.
I was very fortunate to have three direct offsprings off Barcos Princess.
Two hens and a cock all with different sire. I selected these birds in his young bird
loft as a gift after doing some photography on the eyes of his imports and help
design the banner for his website. They will be a big part of my breeding program
for the years to come.

The eye of Mrs.Merckx 00MEXICO 104967 BCH (inbred 0751 BunagVerbruggen) excellent breeding hen for the Bunag Loft. She was not raced but
trained 100 miles several times. Then put to stock. She is currently the foundation
hen of my 0751 family.

0751 is dam , grand dam , great grand dam and great great grand dam of
winners and breeders of winners in the San Francisco Bay Area and Philippines
North and shorter South race courses. Flown by various Pifers brothers in the
Philippines and some SFR brothers. The HLREO of this bird is graded very high.
Talking about conventional eyesign, the fifth circle (the breeding circle) is very
prominent. She has a complete and thick circle of correlation and circle of
adaptation. A tremendous black specs of mountains and ridges in the iris. A
gorgeous pearl eye with a tint of blue-gray . She carries the recessive slate color and
produced some fine slates with eye shades from pearl to violet eyes.
Ismael Franco purchased a direct daughter of 0751 at the SFR Annual Auction.
This gorgeous hen as he put it won a 2nd Place SFR Auction winning a good sum for
him that year .The bird also won 2nd Place Elko, NV. a 400 mile race after clocking
40 minutes after arrival . He got his friends clock the bird while he and his family
attended the church and was 2nd 500 miles during the same season. This magnificent
hen flew 4 old bird season for Franco and flew 200- 500 miles and every time won a
diploma. According to Ismael Franco this bird is being bought by Joe Carini . Joe
was asking how much he wanted for the bird. But Ismael refused to sell the bird.

The hen was never bred during her flying carrier. And died right after Ismael
put her to stock to breed for the first time.
Leo Gomez (SFR CLUB) flying the same Verbruggen family was also highly
successful flying this amazing family. Below is the eye of his 94SFR 0209 BBH ,Leos
excellent Verbruggen hen. She also won 1st 400 miles SFR OB Race. A half brother
also won a 3rd Place winner for me SFR 94 YB race. Crossed with my 0751 BunagVebruggen blood .This 2009 she was mated to Tigas Ace to enhance my Bunag0751 Verbruggen familys breeding and racing performance. I got 2 gorgeous
young birds in the first clutch but 2 unfertile eggs in the 2nd clutch.
Im still hopeful to get fertile eggs on her. Since she is in her last inning for
breeding . Im contemplating if I will break the pair this year or just continue to
breed her. According to Leo Gomez she gave him 2 clutches of unfertile eggs before
I got her. I believe LUCK is on my side. I decided to gave her a rest and breed her
this spring of 2010.

The full brother of 95SFR 0209 BBH , 95SFR 0255 BBC won a 600 miles combine
(Bay Cities Combine) flown by Leo Gomez. A daughter of this hen won 1st Place
Winnemucca SFR Club race. And a grand daughter won 2 combine races in a club
in Los Angeles, Ca.

Jake Alhambra, Hellracers (El Cerrito,Ca) flew in Hayward Club (Bay Cities
Combine) and with minimal training tosses of only up to Sacramento, won 1st Silver
Springs, Nevada 190 miles Hayward Club 15 minutes ahead. With 08Hellracers
0105 a Slate cock, 0751 Bunag-Verbruggen cross and an 8th Combine with
08Hellracer 0108 another 0751 Bunag- Verbruggen cross. 2008 YB season Bay
Cities Combine. I was fortunate to have a full brother of 0105 Otso as a gift from
Jake.

2009 North Race. PFC (Pilipinas Federacion Columbophile) .The sire 06SFR 1252

It was interesting to note that 2009PFC 983345 BC Cock was injured during
one of the training flights. Coming home in the loft with a wounded neck. Danny
Yap sutured the open neck wound and rested him for 2 weeks and back he goes to
the training truck .With Gods blessing he turned out to be the 2009 Overall
Champion PFC North Race.

Valentino Cua,( New Manila,Phil.) had been breeding and flying the 0751
Verbruggen blood from my early beginnings of Pifers (2004). He is one of Pifers
International Elite members flying with the prestigious PHA (Philippine Homing

from Aparri ,considered by many as one of the hardest North race station.

Shared some of his experiences with the descendants of ( 04SFR 0191 BBC )
He said that it was true that those who were able to acquire this bloodline were
indeed lucky. He had proven twice how great is their racing instinct. One direct
son of 04SFR 0191 ( 0751 Bunag-Verbruggen Janssen) came home from Vigan 347
km North Race 1 hour ahead of the next bird with only 9 clock birds in the Club.
It was a non stop rain and the Vigan race was a bad smash. And last year 2008 a
great grandson of 04SFR 0191 came home from Ilagan 305 km North Race 1
hour ahead of the next bird another smash race with only 3 birds clocking in the
Club. The bird was only 5 months old and a line bred bird with both grandsire off
04SFR 0191 BBC. And just last Sunday (Sept. 2009) two more grand children raced
through a continuous rain. Should have won 1st and 2nd on the Second Lap of their
Clubs Fun Race (Club Money Race) but hes been hard headed and failed to enter
them. Next time he will test the racing ability of 04SFR 0191 great great grand
children with positive feeling for either the South Race Series or the North Summer
Races.

With my almost 20 yrs of study of eyesign I therefore conclude that eyesign is

not a very reliable tool in it self. The more I study eyesign the more I feel that I
dont know more about the subject. It will only lead me back to stage one of my
research. I still believe that the overall health of our skywarrior is more
important than eyesign if a fancier wanted to gauge a pigeon in just one category.

It would be a huge mistake to just judge a pigeon by eyesign alone. I have seen
wild pigeons with an amazing eyesign and I have seen a bird that won an eyesign
show that dont breed the goods. A healthy bird with no eyesign can win races and
breed better birds than a bird with a winning A1 eye sign but not prime health wise.
A bird that gave excellent racing or breeding performance in the loft would be
much pleasing to a fancierss eye if the eyesign of the said bird is truly wonderful.
Specially if the said eye can win an eyesign show. Nevertheless it is still just an
icing in a cake. The true value of a racing pigeon is not base on its eyesign but on
its excellent performance in the breeding and racing loft.
Who on earth doesnt want a great performing pigeon coupled with a great
looking eye. I do. What about you?
