SCOPE
1.1

General
This specification covers the minimum technical requirements for the design,
manufacture, and testing of mechanically induced air flotation units. For a specific
flotation unit, this specification shall be used in conjunction with the project
specifications and data sheets for that flotation unit. Any exceptions to the
requirements of this specification shall be submitted in writing for resolution by the
COMPANY.

1.2

Item Definition
Flotation units separate solids and oil from produced water prior to disposal and
include as minimum: the tanks, rotors, skimmers, electric motor drivers, level
controller, and breather valves necessary to process and control the flow of treated
water.

DESIGN AND FABRICATION

3.1

Process Design
3.1.1

The gas flotation unit is used to remove oil and suspended solids from
effluent water produced by oil and gas processing facilities. The unit
employs mechanically induced gas flotation for the separation process.
The mechanism shall include motor-driven rotors and skimmer paddles.

3.1.2

Gas bubbles are dispersed in the oily water stream by a vortex set up by
the mechanical rotors. Oil particles and suspended solids attach to the gas
bubbles as they rise to the surface. The skimmer paddles will then remove
the oil and suspended solids from the gas flotation unit.

3.1.3

Oil in the water may be in the form of fine emulsion. The produced water
enters the gas flotation unit from a corrugated plate interceptor (CPI) by
means of gravity flow.

3.1.4

Flotation cells shall be capable of processing a fluid of the composition

specified on the data sheets at the pressures, temperatures, and capacities
specified. Influent and effluent water qualities shall be given on the
"Flotation Unit Data Sheet."
