Conveyor for Sushi Restaurant

Introduction
Conveyor system is widely used in various industries to move materials or products
from one location to another. Conveyors can be used to transport a variety of materials
from massive and weighty materials such as ore, sand, coal to light-weight processed food
such as hot dogs and sweets. The ability of conveyor system to allow rapid transportation
of materials makes them a popular choice especially amongst packaging industries.
Moreover, conveyors can be conveniently installed almost anywhere. The size of
conveyors also ranges depending on particular requirements by customers.
Sushi restaurant has a built in conveyor system that uses belt drive as means of
transmission element. The conveyor belt is designed in a relatively squared shape in the
middle of the sushi restaurant that connects to the hungry customers dining table.
Sushi dishes are readily made by sushi chefs and placed on the running conveyor belt that
travels all over the restaurant. This conveyor belt eliminates staff lacking problem and
waiters running all over the place to serve customers during rush hours. This effectively
reduces the chaos thats in the restaurant and allows the customers to have their meal in
peace. Customers can also choose to sit directly facing the conveyor belt or sit on a table at
right angle to the conveyor belt. The conveyor system has a speed reducer in consideration
of customers safety and to make sure they have enough time to take the sushi dish that
they need without difficulty.
Customer Requirements
The aim of this project is to design a new conveyor system for a popular Japanese
restaurant. The conveyor is driven by a 2 kW, 1000 rpm (104.72 rad/s) AC induction motor.
The restaurant operates from 10 am to 10 pm daily. Therefore, the conveyor will need to
operate 12 hours a day for 7 days a week. The desired speed for the conveyor is a low 4
rad/s so that the customers can easily retrieve the sushi dishes.
To conserve space for tables and chairs in the restaurant, the power transmission system
should be as small as possible. The customer had also requested that the system should be
designed with ease of use, low operating and acquisition costs in mind.

Function
1. To receive power from the motor through a gear box.
2. To transmit the rotational power from the motor to pull the conveyor belt through
the shaft and bearing.
3. To use the rotational power that provide movement to carry products either in a
straight direction or through directional changes and elevation

Design Requirements
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

The conveyor belt must transmit 2 kW

The velocity ratio is 26.18/1
The input is an induction motor with a rotational speed of 104.72 rad/s
The power output of 2 kW is delivered at 4 rad/s
The conveyor will operate for 12 hours daily

Evaluation Criteria
1. Safety
2. Performance
3. Low cost
4. Ease to manufacture
5. Light weight
6. Small size
7. Reliable
8. Modularity
9. Maintainability
10. Energy efficiency
11. Low noise and vibration (smooth operation )
12. Attractive appearance
