Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, was one of the first “literary critics.” That is,
he was one of the first people who set out to describe the categories of
literature: what drama is, what epic is, what character is, what tragedy is,
and so on. He wrote a lot about the dramatists who were contemporaries or
near-contemporaries of his, like Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides.
Aristotle’s definitions and descriptions of literary elements have been hugely
influential for Western literature, and are worth learning.
