Best Pattern for Easy to Knit Socks

Materials Used:
2 skeins 332 yards total of Patons Kroy
Socks (fingering weight 4-ply 14wpi)
Gauge: 28 to 32 sts = 4 inches
o 1 skein is used per sock
US 2 2.75mm double-pointed needles
(4 needles used)
This pattern is used to knit up medium-sized
socks (shoe size 7-8). After knitting the gusset,
the length of the foot can be adjusted by
knitting extra rows or knitting fewer rows. I try
the socks on as I knit them to get the right
length. If you are making the socks for yourself, I
suggest you do this.
Another tip: If youre using a variegated yarn,
notice where you start your cast on. Youll want
to start your second sock at the same striped
place with the yarn.
Just one more tip: I recommend Staci Perrys
class - socks for beginners (www.verypink.com),
if youve never knitted a pair of socks. Youll
learn how to knit a pair of socks using larger
needles and worsted weight yarn. What you
learn from that class can be applied here.
Good Luck!

Part I: Cuff and Body

Use long-tail cast on. Cast on 64 stitches onto one needle. Next divide stitches evenly amongst the three
needles (20, 24, 20) [needle 1, needle 2, needle 3]. Join in the round. Be careful not to twist your
stitches. Note: If you like, you can cast on (16, 32, 16) as youll need to move stitches around later to this
sequence before you knit the heel flap. The only reason I start with (20, 24, 20) is that I think it is easier
to knit in the round if the stitches are more equally matched around the needles.
Work in K2 P2 pattern for 2-inches to make the cuff.
When the cuff is completed, change to stockinette (knit every row). Knit until you have 5.5- to 6-inches
total from the top edge of the cuff.

Part II: Heel Flap

If you dont have the right side of

the sock facing you, turn the sock
inside out.
o Move stitches equally
around the needles until
you have the following
sequence (16, 32, 16). Be
careful not to twist your
stitches when youre
moving them.
o Needle 1 should have the
working strand of yarn.
o Needle 2 has 32 stitches
for the heel flap.

Using another needle, knit back and forth

on Needle 2 as follows:
Note: You want to make sure you start on
a right-side row; therefore, it may be
necessary to purl across all stitches on
Needle 2 before beginning the
instructions below.

Row 1: sl 1 knitwise, k1, *s1 purlwise, k1*,

repeat stitches between * to end, turn

Row 2: sl 1 purlwise, purl across row, turn

Repeat these two rows for a total of 32

rows.

Repeat Row 1 to end on a knit row. (33

rows total)

When you begin the next step, turning

the heel, you will be starting on the purl
side.

The picture above is the right side. The stitch you see (the 33
rows) is called the eye of partridge stitch. It is commonly used
to make stronger heels.
The picture to the left is of the heel flap - the purl side.

Part III: Turn the Heel

You will be knitting short rows; that means you are not going all the way to the end of a row before you turn
your work. All slipped stitches are slipped purlwise. The knit togethers and purl togethers happen across the
gap. Youll see what I mean when you work the third row. Youre still only working on needle 2.

Row 1: p18, p2tog, p1, turn

Row 2: sl 1, k5, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 3: sl 1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 4: sl 1, k7, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 5: sl 1, p8, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 6: sl 1, k9, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 7: sl 1, p10, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 8: sl 1, k11, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 9: sl 1, p12, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 10: sl 1, k13, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 11: sl 1, p14, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 12: sl 1, k15, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 13: sl 1, p16, p2tog, TURN (19 stitches
on needle)
Row 14: knit across to last 2 stitches and
k2tog (18 total stitches on needle)

Part IV: The Gusset

Note: I recommend you watch a video on picking up stitches for socks (gussets). I have not included any pictures
for picking up stitches because I thought they may confuse you rather than help you.
Continuing to work on the same needle, pick up 14 stitches along the side of the heel (needle 1).
Next, using a new needle, knit across the stitches on the next two needles, combining those stitches to one
needle (needle 2).
Now, using a new needle, pick up 14 stitches along the other side of the heel. Continue knitting to the center of
the heel. (Remember, your heel has 18 stitches, so youll knit to the middle of those 18.)
Next, move stitches around the needles until you have this sequence (23, 32, 23). There should now be 23
stitches on needle 1, 32 stitches on needle 2, and 23 stitches on needle 3.
The center of the heel is the beginning round. Needle 2 has the instep stitches.
Begin shaping:
Row 1:
Needle 1: knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1
Needle 2: knit across
Needle 3: k1, ssk, knit to end

Row 2: Knit around.

Repeat these rows until there are 64 stitches total (16, 32, 16).

Next, continue knitting around until you are about 1 inches from the end of your toes. While knitting around,
try the sock on occasionally to see where you are.

Part V: Toe Shaping

Row 1:
Needle 1: knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1
Needle 2: k1, ssk, knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1
Needle 3: k1, ssk, knit to end

Row 2: Knit around.

Repeat these two rows four times.

Next, repeat row 1, five times.

If necessary, to get the appropriate length for your toes, you can adjust how your repeat rows 1 and 2, but you
want to end with a total of 28 stitches.

Part VII: Finishing the Toe with the Kitchener Stitch

Note: I recommend you watch a video on the Kitchener Stitch.
Continue to knit with needle 3, and knit to the end of needle 1. Youre only using two needles now.
There are 14 stitches on each needle.
If you are not familiar with the Kitchener stitch, I recommend you watch some videos on YouTube that
demonstrate the stitch. There are some good ones for this stitch and for all the steps in sock knitting.
Cut your yarn, leaving a long 18-20 inches. Thread this through a tapestry needle. Hold your two knitting needles
parallel so that you have a front and back needle.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Insert the yarn into the first stitch on the front needle as if to knit, pull the stitch off the needle.
Insert the yarn into the second stitch on the front needle as if to purl, leave the stitch on the needle.
Insert the yarn into the first stitch on the back needle as if to purl, pull the stitch off the needle.
Insert the yarn into the second stitch on the back needle as if to knit, leave the stitch on the needle.
Repeat steps 1-4 until complete. Pull yarn to interior of sock and weave in ends.

Well done. Now, make a second sock!
