THE MOST MALEFIC INFLUENCE

Mostly, the people seeking advantage of astrology remember it in the time of distress.
Therefore, the first thing is to gauge the strength of the planets so that the malefic
influences on the weak planets can be analyzed. The most malefic influence in a nativity
is that of the lord of the eighth house if it contains a mooltrikona sign. However, if it
does not contain a mooltrikona sign, the title of the most malefic planet passes on to the
lord of the twelfth house if there is a mooltrikona sign.
Further, if, both the eighth and the twelfth houses do not contain a mooltrikona sign, then
the title of the most malefic planet passes on to Ketu.
The close impact of the planets is gauged through their closeness to the natal positions
i.e. a longitudinal distance of less than 5 degrees. Besides the natal position of the
planets, there is mid-point or the most effective point of each house known by the degree
rising in the ascendant. Suppose an ascendant of 16 degrees rises.
It means the mid-point or the most effective point of each house would be 16 degrees.
The most malefic planets in any house having a longitude between 11 to 21 degrees
would malefically influence the most effective point of the house of its placement and the
house(s)/ planet(s) aspected by it or the planet(s) in conjunction with it.
For the convenience of the readers, the following are the most malefic planets (MMP) for
the various ascendants.

If the planet or the lord of the house, with which the most malefic planet is forming a
close conjunction/aspect, is strong and well placed, this most malefic planet creates
tension(s) with regard to the matters represented by the house/planet involved. When the
afflicted planet is weak, the significations suffer seriously. When the afflicted planet is
weak and badly placed, it results in tragic happenings. To understand the difference
between tension, serious trouble and tragic happenings consider the situations of fever,
jaundice and the loss of a limb ruled by the concerned planet, respectively. The transit
impact of slow moving stationary malefic planets triggers the trouble. When the
affliction is close to the mid-point of the house, significations of all the houses involved,
that is the house occupied and the house(s) aspected, suffer. In the case of the afflicted
planets, besides their general significations, the significations of the house (i) where the
mooltrikona sign is placed, and (ii) significations of the house where the planet is placed,
suffer. The descending order for the weak planets is a combust planet, bad placement,

debilitation, old age, infancy, debilitated in navamsa and the weak dispositor. The
weakness of planets is effectively strengthened by use of a KAVACH to a large extent.

THE MOST BENEFIC INFLUENCE

If there is a mooltrikona sign in the fourth house from the ascendant, its lord is called the
most benefic planet (MBP). In case there is no mooltrikona sign in the fourth house, then
the role of the most benefic planet is played by the lord of the second house containing a
mooltrikona sign. In case there is no mooltrikona sign in the second house, then the role
of the most benefic planet is played by the lord of the ninth house containing a
mooltrikona sign. And if there is no mooltrikona sign in the ninth house, too, then the role
of the most benefic planet is played by the lord of the third house containing a
mooltrikona sign. For various ascendants the most benefic planets are as under:
ASCENDANT : MOST BENEFIC PLANET
Aries : The Moon
Taurus : The Sun
Gemini : Mercury
Cancer : Venus
Leo : Mercury
Virgo : Jupiter
Libra : Jupiter
Scorpio : Saturn
Sagittarius : The Sun
Capricorn : Mars
Aquarius : Venus
Pisces : Mars
When strong the most benefic planet gives excellent results in life. It blesses with fortune,
long lived parents, properties, vehicles, mental peace and good status in life.
When weak and/or afflicted it causes setbacks in life, problems in assests, loss of wealth,
problems to parents, problems in marriage, etc. When weak and/or afflicted, it should be
strengthened by a Special Power Kavach or a Special Purpose Kavach. The afflicting
planet(s) should be propitiated regularly.

n Astrology it is understood that at any point of time nature is governed by

a planet and the position of that planet in the horoscope determines how
the native will feel or behave.
This chapter details the calculation of the planet acting at any point of time
and the period for which the planet rules.
There are three basic parameters in a horoscope : 1. planet 2. house and 3. Rashi
(sign). Twelve rashis are spread over twelve houses; on an average one rashi
occupies one house. However, rashi is exactly 300, whereas a house may vary in size
and the starting of house may fall at any rashi at any point. It is equivalent to
placing one circle over the other, both having same dimensions, but any one point on
circumference of one circle can be made to align with any point on circumference of
the other circle. The rest of the circle gets automatically placed. Similarly in a
horoscope we determine the Lagna (first house position) and place the rashi circle
over the rest of the twelve houses.
After fixing the signs over houses we place the planets in the various houses. Since
there are only nine planets and some planets combine together in a house, some
houses are left empty. The planets possess some intrinsic properties and when mixed
with the colour of sign and house they occupy, they change their colour, leading to
different behaviour, at different time of births. Study of this change in behaviour of
the planets is basic astrology.
There are three basic reasons why planets behave differently, like
1. the house in which it is placed.
2 sign in which it is placed
3. other planets associated with aspecting it.
Once the planet's behaviour is ascertained because of its placement, the results are
changed with time, depending upon Dasha operating at that time. Dasha tells us
which planet is effective to give results at what time.
To understand what the horoscope has in store for a native, let us study how the
planets have co-relation with life. We give below the basic nature of planets and
houses and also what they signify.
Signification of Planets

bad habits, hospital, jail, long journeys and quests. It also indicates export and
import, also feet.
Strength of Planets
The planets gain strength at certain points and behave differently in different signs
and houses. They show different relationships with different planets.
Planets own certain signs. Sun and Moon own one sign and other planets own two
signs each. Rahu - ketu, being pseudo planets, do not own any sign. Planets get
exalted or become powerful at certain points and get debilitated exactly 1800 away.
Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are benefic by nature and others are malefic as
shown in the table below.
For any ascendant, some planets become Yogakaraka or maraka, depending upon
the house they own. This is one of the most important factor in prediction. A
yogakaraka planet shows good results in its dasha or antar Dasha. Stones are
suggested only for a yogakaraka planet. if a planet is benefic only then it is good to
make it strong ; else it will harm the native. planets which are yogakaraka for each
ascendant is given in the table below.
Benefics - Lords of 1,5,9
Yogakaraka and lords of 4, 7, 10, if natural malefic.
Malefics - Lords of 3,6,
Maraka 11and lords of 4,7,10,if natural benefic
Neutral - Lord of 2,8, 12.

1. FUNCTIONAL NATURE OF PLANETS

The functional nature of planets is the key analytical factor in the horoscope analysis. Besides
Rahu and Ketu, the planets, whose mooltrikona signs are in malefic houses (sixth, eighth and
twelfth) with reference to the ascendant, act as functional malefic planets in a nativity. For this
purpose, under the Systems' Approach the sign Cancer is considered as the mooltrikona sign of
the Moon.
For various ascending signs, the functional malefic planets are mentioned hereunder:
1. Aries : Mercury, Rahu and Ketu.
2. Taurus : Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Rahu and Ketu.
3. Gemini : Rahu and Ketu.

4. Cancer : Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.

5. Leo : The Moon, Rahu and Ketu.
6. Virgo : Saturn, Mars, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu.
7. Libra : Mercury, Rahu and Ketu.
8. Scorpio : Mars, Venus, Rahu and Ketu.
9. Sagittarius : The Moon, Rahu and Ketu.
10. Capricorn : The Sun, Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu.
11. Aquarius : The Moon, Mercury, Rahu and Ketu.
12. Pisces : The Sun, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
The functional nature of any planet depends on the nature of the mooltrikona house of that
planet. It is not related to the strength of the planet. A planet may be weak or strong but the
functional nature will remain same as per the defined principle for identifying the functional nature
of planets.
SPECIAL IMPACT OF RAHU AND KETU
In exceptional cases, when Rahu is well placed in a mooltrikona sign of a planet, without causing
any conjunction or close aspect with other houses and planets and its dispositor is strong, Rahu
gives good results during its sub-periods for materialistic prosperity. Rahu-Ketu, when exalted,
give materialist benefits while debilitated Rahu involves the native in exposed scandals and acute
physical sufferings.
2. IDENTIFYING AFFLICTING PLANETS
It is very necessary to understand the difference between afflicting planets and afflicted planets.
All planets can become afflicted, but only the functional malefic planets can be afflicting planets.
A transit functional malefic planet will afflict always its natal position by conjunction or aspect,
except when placed in its own mooltrikona house in rasi/birth chart. A natal/transit functional
malefic planet never afflicts its own mooltrikona house, except when the functional malefic planet
is already afflicted and/or afflicts from a dusthana/malefic house.
3. UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF PLANETARY CONJUNCTIONS AND ASPECTS:
In the case of influence of functional malefic planets over MEPs/planets simultaneously strong in
rasi and transit, the orb is one degree on either side for normal afflictions and two degrees on
either side for special/multiple afflictions, while in the case of MEPs/planets either weak in rasi or
in transit, the orb is five degrees on either side.
In the case of influence of strong functional benefic planets over MEPs/planets simultaneously
strong in rasi and transit, the orb is five degrees on either side, while in the case of MEPs/planets
either weak in rasi or in transit, the orb is one degree on either side. Under the influence of
natal/transit functional malefic planets, all planets get malefically influenced. The maximum
influence of the transit or natal conjunction/aspect is when it is within one degree on either side.
As soon as the transit influence starts separating, the influence starts tapering down. It is very
important to see the strength of the planet on which the transit influence is being studied. For

example, if the Sun, being the lord of the fourth house and being a functional benefic planet, is
placed in the fourth house and its longitude is eleven degrees and is strong, the functional malefic
influence of Jupiter, the most malefic planet for the Taurus ascendant, will be effective when
Jupiter is between 9 degrees and 13 degrees in the signs Leo, Sagittarius, Aquarius or Aries,
while the single functional malefic influence of Mars will be effective when Mars is between 10
degrees and 12 degrees in the signs Leo, Capricorn, Aquarius or Taurus, because the Sun is
strong in the natal chart. Please do not forget to consider the transit strength of this Sun. If the
Sun in a Taurus nativity is placed in the sign Libra at a longitude of five degrees then the transit
influence of Jupiter over it would be effective whenever Jupiter transits from zero degrees to 10
degrees in Libra, Aquarius, Aries or Gemini, and the transit influence of Mars over it would be
effective whenever Mars transits from zero degrees to 10 degrees in Libra, Pisces, Aries or
Cancer. However, once the longitude of the transit Jupiter or the transit Mars is 5 degrees, the
transit influence would start separating and tapering down but it will clear the affliction only when
their longitude is over ten degrees, assuming they are in direct movement. The orb of affliction for
a non-mooltrikona house is five degrees on either side of the most effective point. We hope the
readers are able to understand this dimension for better analysis.
4. IDENTIFYING THE STRENGTH OF PLANETS
A weak natal planet is not capable of fully protecting/promoting its general significations and the
significations of its mooltrikona house during the course of its sub-periods and during the triple
transit functional malefic influences. By descending order of weakness, any planet becomes weak
when:
1) The most effective point of its mooltrikona sign is afflicted by a functional malefic planet within
an orb of one degree.
2) The most effective point of its house of placement is afflicted by a functional malefic planet
within an orb of one degree.
3) It is conjunct or aspected by any functional malefic planet within an orb of one degree.
4) It is combust due to its nearness to the Sun.
5) It occupies malefic houses from the ascendant, except if in its own mooltrikona sign.
6) It occupies its sign of debilitation.
7) It is in the state of infancy or old-age.
8) It occupies its debilitated sign in navamsa.
9) It occupies the mooltrikona sign of a weak planet.
10) It is the Moon within 72 degrees either side of the Sun. However, this is a minor weakness.
NOTE: In serial nos. (1) to (3) above, when the affliction is special or multiple i.e. when it comes
from:
1) a conjunction with/ aspect from the most malefic planet,
2) an aspect from a functional malefic planet placed in a dusthana,
3) a conjunction with Rahu or Ketu (Rahu-Ketu axis)
4) an aspect of a functional malefic planet afflicted by other(s) functional malefic planet,

5) more than one functional malefic planet at the same time,

Then the otherwise "strong" planet should be considered afflicted (and weak) even when the orb
of affliction is of two degrees.
6. IDENTIFYING THE RESULTS OF VIMSHOTRI DASA
Marriage & Relationship fructify in the sub-periods of planets signifying marriage/relationship.
Therefore, it is very important that we understand the method of analyzing the dasa (main period)
and bhukti (sub-period) results. The results of the general significations of the sub-period lord
depend upon its strength, placement, conjunction and aspects to the same. The significations of
the house of placement are touched when transit planets create benefic or malefic influences on
the sub-period lord, depending upon their functional nature whether benefic or malefic. In the subperiod of a planet, the following significations are touched:
(1) The general significations of the planet. For example the Sun rules father, social status,
position with the government, male child, digestive system, heart, blood pressure, etc.
(2) The significations of the house where the mooltrikona sign of the said planet is placed. In case
in the mooltrikona house some functional malefic planet is placed close to the most effective
point, or some functional malefic planet is closely aspecting the most effective point of the said
house, or some planet is closely afflicted then during the sub-periods of the afflicting and afflicted
planet(s) the significations of the mooltrikona house shall not prosper and shall face problems
indicated by the afflicting planet depending upon its lordship. A natal/transit functional malefic
planet never afflicts its own mooltrikona house, except when the functional malefic planet is
already afflicted and/or afflicts from a dusthana/malefic house.
(3) The significations of the houses where the planet is placed.
(4) During the sub-period of a planet all the impacts on the house, which contains the mooltrikona
sign of the said planet, also come into force. Due to such influences on the most effective point by
a strong functional benefic planet even the sub-period of a weak planet would be blessing the
native with good or very good results. Similarly, a close impact of a functional malefic planet on
the most effective point of a mooltrikona house may not allow the planet ruling that mooltrikona
house to show good results in its sub-periods even if the said planet is strong in the natal chart.
7. TIMING OF MARRIAGE/RELATIONSHIP.

PRIME DETERMINANT OF MARRIAGE

(1) The lord of the seventh house. In case there is no mooltrikona sign in the
seventh house, then the lord of the houses signifying marriage ( the second,
fourth, eighth or twelfth house containing mooltrikona sign) are considered.
For various ascendants the following planets are prime determinant of marriage:Aries

Venus

Taurus

The Sun

Gemini

Jupiter

Cancer

The Sun

Leo

Saturn

Virgo

Venus

Libra

Mars

Scorpio

Jupiter

Sagittarius

The Moon

Capricorn

The Moon

Aquarius

The Sun

Pisces

Mercury

(2) Venus and Jupiter are significators of marriage for males and females,
respectively.
(3) The planets closely influencing the most effective point of the house(s)
signifying marriage or their lords act as secondary determinants of marriage.
Marriage can take place in the sub-periods of the strong planets placed in the
houses signifying marriage. These planets become additional secondary
significators of marriage.
If the prime determinant and the significator of marriage are strong and there is
no affliction to the most effective points of the houses signifying marriage, the
marriage takes place at the appropriate time. The good strength of Venus
hastens the process. The delay is caused by:
(1) The close influence of the functional malefic planets or the most malefic
planet on the prime determinant and secondary significators for marriage;
(2) Prime determinant of marriage being weak or badly placed and/or afflicted
by the most malefic or a functional malefic planet.
(3) When the prime determinants and secondary determinant(s) are weak
and/or are afflicted.
(4) When the lords of the eighth and/or twelfth houses containing a mooltrikona
sign are weak, badly placed and are afflicted.
The influence of the functional malefic planets delays while the influence of the
most malefic planet (MMP) delays inordinately and/or denies. The malefic
influence of the MMP cannot be mellowed without persistent performance of the
appropriate astral remedies. If there is a mooltrikona sign in the eighth house
from the ascendant, its lord is called MMP. In case there is no mooltrikona sign
in the eighth house, then the role of the MMP is played by the lord of the twelfth
house containing the mooltrikona sign. In case there is no mooltrikona sign in the
twelfth house, as well, then the role of the MMP is played by Ketu.

Love and Marriage

Our love lives can be seen through a comprehensive assessment of the 7th house, the 7th
lord, Venus, and in the case of women, Jupiter, which is the significator for the husband.
Any close afflictions to these points in the chart will cause either delays or hardships
connected with married life. This is especially the case with Saturn. If Saturn falls in the
1st, 5th, 7th, or 10th houses, the native will often have real difficulties in married life.
These problems may range from delays in marriage (after 35 years old) to divorce.
Generally, the closer the aspect, the more problems Saturn can create. A native with Mars
in the 7th house, for example, will have problems relating to the partner in a loving way.
They may also attract more aggressive martial-type partners. Hitler, for example, had
numerous afflictions to his 7th house and he never married and had a very odd and
disturbed love life. If the nodes are associated with the these love significators, it will
also cause problems such as persistent disagreements or instability in married life.
Prominent Rahu or Ketu may also indicate a preference for foreign or unusual partners.
House placements of these key marriage planets also play a role. Whenever the 7th lord
or Venus are placed in the 12th house, we can begin to think of multiple marriages, or
perhaps foreign partners or even secret affairs. Generally, the placement of the 7th lord in
dussthana houses is bad news for married life, although there are many ways which can
compensate for these inititally troublesome placements. A Venus placed in the 6th will
generally be fine if it receives the aspect of Jupiter or Mercury and is not afflicted by a
malefic planet such as Saturn, Mars or the nodes. Hard aspects from outer planets to these
marriage planets are also problematic and create difficulties symbolized by the planet
involved. Pluto in hard aspect to Venus or the 7th lord will signal a marriage that is a
power struggle. With Neptune, there may be deception or illness in the partner. With
Uranus, there may be an avoidance of partners or an inability to stay with one partner.
The navamsa chart or the Vedic 9th harmonic chart provides special insight into married
life. If the ascendant and 7th houses of the navamsa are unafflicted, then this can often
offset some afflictions in the natal chart. And since the navamsa chart is said to govern
the second half of life, a good navamsa chart may also point to a gradual improvement of
relationship karma if the natal chart is troubled. Conversely, a navamsa chart with Mars
and Saturn in the ascendant will invariably create problems and will point to conflictual
relationships. If this occurs with an otherwise unafflicted natal chart, we can still expect
some significant aspect of the affliction to manifest in the native's life. If the natal chart is
strong, however, it may not lead to divorce and might only betoken periodic troubles.

1st house
The most important part of a chart is the first house. The influences on the first house and
its lord or ruler (ie. the planet associated with its sign) will exercise a disproportionate
influence on the person in terms of basic orientation. Aspects to the first house are also
important. These can be read as if the person has the planet actually in the 1st house, and
they will exhibit their influence the closer they are to the ascendant itself. The first house
lord rules the whole chart so it merits special attention. Besides the moon and the
ascendant, this is one of the most important planets in the chart. Take note of the sign and
house it's in and any planets it is associated with. Orbs are very important in deciding
what planets exercise the greatest influence. For example, a person with Venus 15 degrees
from the ascendant will likely be less Venusian if their Moon and first lord are conjunct
Jupiter within 5 degrees. While all influences will show up in some way, the Jupiter
influence will likely predominate.
Moon
Next examine the situation of the Moon. The Moon represents the mind and the emotions
and therefore plays a big part in describing the person as a whole. The stronger the Moon,
the better chance the native will have a happier life. If the Moon is bright, (ie. opposite
the Sun although the general rule of thumb is the further from the Sun, the better,
particularly where the Moon is more than 90 degrees away), then the person will tend to
stand out in a crowd or have a more pleasing manner about them.. A Moon in the first
house often confers this quality and can make the native physically attractive. A Moon
associated with Jupiter is usually good for success and can make the native generous, and
interested in following society's conventions. A Moon with the nodes, Rahu and Ketu, on
the other hand, can make the native unconventional and in some cases, mentally
unbalanced. More generally, the Moon associated with the nodes will make a person
sensitive and perceptive to the people around them. The Moon is dussthana houses (ie
6th, 8th, 12th) will generally make the native shy or retiring and will often make them
prefer their own company. Aspects to the Moon are also important, as is the Moon's
dispositor (ie. the ruler of the sign the Moon is placed in).
Sun
The Sun in Vedic astrology does not hold the same power as it enjoys in Western
astrology. Although it is still important, it is usually relegated to third place in terms of
important horoscopic points. The Sun shows vitality and ego and where energy is used to
project the self onto the world. And strong Sun confers confidence, good health, and
leadership. A Sun with problems such as dussthana house placement may show lack of
self confidence. If the Sun is afflicted by malefics (Rahu, Ketu, Saturn, Mars) may be

aggressive or egotistical. Since the Sun represents the father, a Sun with afflictions and
otherwise bad placement may also show difficulties with the father, either through the
native's relationship with him or more specifically, hardships borne by the father such as
bad health, poverty, or criminality. As with the Moon, aspects to the Sun help to describe
the essence of the person. A person with a close Saturn aspect to the Sun will display
many Saturnine qualities such as being methodical and pragmatic and desiring order and
control. Similarly, the Sun's dispositor also provides an important clue about the kind of
Sun the person has. For example, George Bush's Sun is in Gemini in the 12th house
which suggests someone who is uncomfortable in the limelight. While this may be true to
an extent, it's important to include the fact that Sun's dispositor is Mercury which sits
exactly on the ascendant tightly conjunct powerful Pluto. This is one way we can see that
Bush's Sun really does account for some of his high public visilibity and the power-laden
nature of his position.

Children
Children are seen through the 5th house and its lord and Jupiter, which is the significator
for children. It is also useful to exmaine the 5th house from the Moon, since the Moon is
associated with fertility. Generally any close affliction (less than 10 degrees) by Mars,
Saturn, Rahu, Ketu to the equal 5th house cusp or the 5th lord will reduce the number of
children. Often, if the affliction is close enough, say less than 3 degrees, a single contact
by these malefics will be enough to deny offspring altogether. Rock Hudson, the gay (and
childless) movie icon who died of AIDS, had Ketu very close to the equal 5th house cusp.
Another dimension to this question is found in the house rulerships. A 5th house ruler
placed in the 12th is not helpful for children and will usually signal the presence of some
12th house matter (adoption/loss, foreign countries, spirituality) with the child. Most
often, there is a mixture of positive and negative qualities to these chart factors. That is
where the good judgement of the astrology is most needed.
The Saptamsa or 7th harmonic chart is also useful to explore the native's experiences with
children. A good saptamsa chart can't fully offset a deeply afflicted 5th house, but it can
provide a boost to a mildly afflicted natal chart that will show some offspring. The
saptamsa chart can also provide clues for the timing of childbirth according the dasha
system.

Career
Employment and career prospects are seen through all facets of the chart, with special
attention paid to the 10th house. The 10th house is associated with career matters and
whatever planets are placed there deserve careful assessment. A native with 1st or 2nd
lord Sun placed in the 10th house, for example, will often excel in leadership positions

where frequent decisions need to made. Conversely, an afflicted Sun in the 10th may
show someone who wants the power of lthe executive position but lacks the ability to do
the job well. The placement and condition of the 10th lord is also critically important. A
10th lord Moon that is aspected by Saturn may be evidence of a person who needs routine
work to feel comfortable in the workplace. The house placement of the 10th lord may
also reveal some element of the native's profession or work environment. A 10th lord
placed in the 12th house may signify a job involving secrets or spirituality, or may
suggest going abroad for employment. The 10th lord in the 2nd house may be linked to
finance or communication, depending on other chart factors. In jazz singer Billie
Holiday's chart, the 10th lord is Venus, the planet of art, and it is placed in the 2nd house
of the voice.
In terms of vocational selection, one has to incorporate all the key factors of the chart.
Someone with an angular Mercury in a kendra close to the house cusp will have to find
an outlet for that Mercury in terms of communicating, writing, teaching, etc. If it is
associated with Saturn, for example, then perhaps intense and measured thought should
be part of their employment scenario. If associated with Jupiter, then a more creative bent
is indicated, especially with writing.
The dasamsa chart of 10th harmonic is often associated with career and status matters.
Planets in the 1st and 10th houses of the dasamsa will exercise a stronger influence on
career. Likewise the sign and house placement of the 1st and 10th lords will provide clues
about vocational aptitude. Also, planets associated with those houses will usually yield
career success in their dasha periods.

Marriage Time
The following are the main rules for arriving at probable marriage age:
1. Jupiter during transit conjoins or aspects natal Mars or 7th sign from natal Mars.
2. Saturn during transit conjoins or aspects natal Mars or 7th sign from natal Mars.
3. Jupiter during transit conjoins or aspects navamsa lagna or navamsa lagna lord.
4. Saturn during transit conjoins or aspects navamsa lagna or navamsa lagna lord.
The following additional points may also be noted:
1. When Jupiter, Saturn or Mars is retrograde in birth chart in a particular sign, they are
to be considered to be in the previous sign also and age is to be counted from there.
2. When Jupiter is in about 1 degree and Saturn is about 3 degrees in the beginning of a
sign, they are to be considered to be in the previous sign also as per the Vakya Siddhanta
followed by nadi astrology and age is to be counted from there.
3. When Rahu is with Mars or next sign to Mars, the 4th sign from mars would be the
sensitive point for interaction with transits of Jupiter, Saturn , Rahu.
4. When Rahu is in opposite sign to mars, the 4th sign from there, that is,. the 10th sign
form natal Mars is to be considered as the sensitive point.

5. When Mars is in parivartana ( exchange of signs) with another planet, Mars is to be

considered to be in own sign acting as the sensitive point.
6. When Mars is retrograde with Rahu, first Mars is to be place in the previous sign and
the 4th sign from there is to be considered as the sensitive point.
These rules are given in the one of the best articles, I came across in long time presented
by Mr. Rayudu. Hope you will enjoy it!

I am starting this tutorial series of Astrology, the great predictive science, in a simplified
manner.
Predictive astrology is a very vast and technical study. One needs to spend quite some
time to study and start analyzing the horoscopes. Since there are large numbers of
software available for casting of horoscope, we will not discuss this and the mathematical
calculations involved in it.
Janam Kundli or Horoscope is a map indicating the ascendant rising in the east and the
position of various planets at the time of birth of a particular person at a particular place.
The particulars required for casting a horoscope are:
1. Date of birth
2. Time of birth and
3. Longitude and Latitude of the place of birth

To study the good or bad effects indicated in a horoscope, our great scholars saints, in
older times, have used the main four constituent or components. These four components
are:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Zodiac Sign (Rashi)

Planets (Grah)
Constellations (Nakhshatras)
Houses (Bhava)

Our great scholars studied the travel path of planets and observed the relative movements
of the various planets. According to the various shapes being formed by the different
constellations and sub constellation groups and the impact of a particular planet observed
in the region, the sky was divided into the twelve parts. These are known as the twelve
zodiac signs. It was observed that the first zodiac sign "Aries" has the shape of an Aries
and hence this name and it had the qualities of the planet Mars hence the lordship of this
sign was given to mars; the second sign Taurus was observed to have the shape of a bull
and qualities of Venus, hence the shape of a bull denotes this sign and lordship of this
sign was given to Venus and so on. Following are the twelve zodiac signs, fixed number
representing the zodiac sign and the lords of zodiac signs.

Sun, the biggest source of energy to earth, in fact is a star and not the planet. Since older
time it is considered that moon, mars, mercury, jupiter, venus and saturn are six planets
and are moving around the sun in a fixed orbit. In predictive astrology sun has been
considered a planet. The great Indian astrologer-saints discovered that although Rahu and
Ketu are two shadow planets only but they influence the human being and the other
matters so deeply that there presence can not be ignored. So considering rahu and ketu we

have nine planets in all. The new find in planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not only
at a great distance but are very slow moving also. Hence they are not included in Indian
predictive astrology.
It is considered that each of these nine planets have a portion of some of the living
beings, materials, situations, institutions etc. in them. So each planets becomes the
representative of the certain good or bad effects and causes this effect on the human being
according to its placement in once horoscope. Considering this fact our great learned
saints allocated the representation of various matters, colors, directions, stages, deeds,
organs etc. to these different planets. In brief their representation is as under:

SUN is the Karka or representative of gold, copper, ruby, king, father, soul,
patience, courage, light, temple, Lord Shiva related work, forest or mountain
travel, east direction, bone, eye, heart, stomach .

MOON is the karka or representative of silver, bell metal, pearl, queen, mother,
blood, eye, lungs, chest, memory, desires, emotions, beauty, milk, water,
white color, north - west direction.
MARS is the karka or representative of copper, coral, younger brothers, bravery,
muscles, bone marrow, kitchen fire, thief, telling lies, arms & ammunition, south
direction.
MERCURY is the karka or representative of child, skin, intestines, speech, green
color, intelligence for learning, maternal uncle, impotency, north direction.
JUPITER is the karka or representative of topaz, elder brother, son, knowledge,
greatness, fat in the body, wealth, lever, hips, air, husband in the horoscopes of
females, king's grace, north - east direction.
VENUS is the karka or representative of diamond, platinum, white gold, wife,
semen, valuable things & wealth, bed, flower, fragrance, music, vehicles, south east direction.
SATURN is the karka or representative of iron, blue sapphire, oil, petrol, leather,
stone, fear, insult, sorrow, diseases of very long span, lower portion of leg, labor,
servants, dirt, police arrest, going to prison, means of cultivation, black color,
darkness, yogi, slow, buffalo, loans, west direction.
RAHU has, in general, all the characteristics of saturn excepts for the body parts.
Gomedh is the stone for Rahu.
KETU has, in general, all the characteristics of mars excepts for the body parts. It
is the representative of all the secretive dealings and works. Cat's eye is its stone.

It has been made clear that to asess the effect of various planets and other things the on
human being the sky or the envelope around the universe has been divided into twelve
parts, called the zodiac signs. Each zodiac sign has a span of 360 / 12 = 30 degrees. To
asess the still finer details this envelope has also been divided into twenty seven parts
called Constellations (Nakshatras) and each constellation has a span of 360 / 27 =13
degrees and 20 minutes. Following are the constellations and their lord planets:

The lordship of various constellations has been given to various planets as per the
qualities it possesses. The start of first constellations coincides with the start of first
zodiac sign i.e., Ashwini and Aries starts from the same point.
Now after the details of constellations we need to have some details of Houses (Bhavas).
As the zodiac sign path has been divided into twelve parts (the zodiac signs), in the same
way the Earth has been divided into twelve imaginary parts (the Houses) as per the birth
ascendant. Like plants each house also represents various qualities, characteristics,

relationship etc. Following are the main astrological information collected from various
houses (image on top):

First House: It is also known as the ascendant or the house representing body. In
a broader way it represents the physical position of once body i.e., height. color,
body structure, head, intelligence, character etc.

Second House: It is also known as wealth house. It also represents right eye, level
of education, speech and its strength, child hood, mother's elder brother and
sisters, husband's or wife's life span ( in wife or husband's horoscope
respectively ) etc.
Third House: It is also known to be the house of younger brothers and sisters. It
also represents right hand, respiratory canal, brother in law's wife, sister in law's
husband, father in law etc.
Fourth House: It is also known as "Sukh Bhav". It represents mother, the house
of living, vehicle, public, feelings, chest, lungs, father's life, water, well etc.
Fifth House: It is also known as Son's House. It represents son and other
children, art of writing, power of logic, future, gambling, heart, elder brother's
wife, elder sister's husband, wife' s elder brother and sisters, luck etc.
Sixth House: It is also known as Enemy House. It represents animosity,
difficulties, loans, health and diseases, intestines, kidneys, mother's younger
brother, life span of elder brothers and sisters etc.
Seventh House: It is also known as Wife's House. It represents wife or husband
i.e., in a male's horoscope it represents wife and in a female's horoscope it
represents husband, married life, ability to produce child, urinary system, father's
elder brothers and sisters, business etc.
Eigth House: It is also known as Life Span House. It represents life - cause of
death, foreign travel, research, elder maternal uncle's wife, mother's elder sister's
husband, destruction etc.
Ninth House: It is also known as Religion House. It represents religion, positive
thinking, fate, father ( in astrological system followed in south India ), blessings
from the king / ruler, visit to own country, fate, noble deeds, wife's younger
brothers and sisters ( in case of male's horoscope ) and husband's younger brothers
and sisters ( in case of female's horoscope ), younger brother's wife, younger
sister's husband etc.
Tenth House: It is also known as "Karma Bhava" or "Deeds House". It represents
good or bad deeds, position, government, father's wealth, mother in law, younger
brother's age, knee etc.
Eleventh House: It is also known as "Income House" or "Gains House". It
represents income, legs, elder brothers and sisters, mother's age, father's younger
brothers and sisters, daughter in law, son in law, charity etc.
Twelfth House: It is known as "Mokhsh Bhava" or "Expenses House". It
represents expenses, left eye, feet, sleep, pleasures, paternal grand mother, age of
sons and daughters, etc.

It's worthwhile knowing the Natural Characteristics of the zodiac signs in brief. The
natural characteristics of the zodiac signs are as under:
MOBILE SIGNS
(Cher Rasi)
Aries ( 1 )
Cancer ( 4 )
Libra ( 7)
Capricorn ( 10 )

FIXED SIGNS
(Sthir Rasi)
Taurus ( 2 )
Leo ( 5 )
Scorpio ( 8 )
Aquarius ( 11 )

DUAL CHARACTER SIGNS

(Daveesavbhav Rasi)
Gemini ( 3 )
Virgo ( 6 )
Sagittarius ( 9 )
Pisces ( 12 )

Simply knowing these natural characters of various signs does not serve any purpose. We
need to know the objective related to these natural characters and use them in predictive
astrology. For example if we execute some work in a mobile / moveable or "cher" lagna
or ascendant it will not be stable. If we undertake a journey in mobile sign we will come
back soon. In the same way, while analyzing a horoscope, if it is found that the ascendant
is a mobile sign and its lord is also positioned in a mobile/moveable/cher sign, then the
person will be fond of traveling and will remain quite mobile in his life. Similarly if the
ascendant is a fixed sign and its lord is also positioned in a fixed sign then the person will
not be very mobile. He will be practically stationed at one place. So it can be concluded
now that a person born in a dual character sign with its lord also positioned in dual
character sign will some times do extensive traveling and some times would not like to
travel at all.
These characteristics are also used for "Mahurat" purposes. For example one would like
to move into his own house in a fixed lagna or sign so that he can live there for a longer
time and so on.
These characteristics are also used in "Horary" or "Prashna Lagna" to reply whether the
work will be done fast (in a moveable sign) or the result will be received late (as in a
fixed sign) or it is unpredictable i.e., it may be done fast or may take longer time (as in a
dual character sign); of course other factors are to be considered also for drawing this
conclusion.
SIGNS WHICH RISE
WITH "HIND PART"
(Prishtouday Rasi)
Aries
Taurus
Cancer
Sagittarius
Capricorn

SIGNS WHICH RISE

WITH "HEAD"
(sheershouday Rasi)
Leo
Virgo
Libra
Scorpio
Aquarius

SIGNS WHICH RISE

WITH "BOTH SIDES"
(Ubyaodya Rasi)
Gemini
Pisces

This character based division of signs is very useful in predictive astrology. Signs which
rise with the "head" are "Shubh" or "auspicious" while the signs rising with the "hind
part" are considered "Ashubh" or "inauspicious". Signs rising from both sides are
considered to be of mixed result givers.

The auspicious works are done in head rising signs and inauspicious work or cruel works
are done in hind part rising signs. Signs rising with both sides are meant for mixed type
of works.
Malefic planet in a hind part rising sign becomes very cruel and hence gives the very
cruel results but if it is positioned in a head rising sign, it will not give that cruel result. In
the same way a benefic planet gives very good result in a head rising sign but will give
much less good result in a hind part rising sign.
Planets when positioned in a head rising sign, give very fast results and the results are
quite delayed when they are positioned in a hind part rising sign . The results comes in
the middle of the period when planets are positioned in a sign which rises from both the
sides.
FIRE SIGNS
(Agni)
Aries
Leo
Sagittarius

EARTH SIGNS
(Prithvi)
Taurus
Virgo
Capricorn

AIR SIGNS
(Vayu)
Gemini
Libra
Aquarius

WATER SIGNS
(Jal)
Cancer
Scorpio
Pisces

Since water and earth is available, on the mother Earth, in the form of a mixture; we can
easily understand that they can co-exist and are not against each other whereas water and
fire can not co-exist and we can conclude that they are against each other. It is seen that
people having prithvitatv & jaltatv raise and people having vayutatv and agnitatv rasie
are friendly.
In general jal & agni; prithvi & agni and jal & vayutatv rasi people are unfriendly to each
other.
Moreover the presence of unfriendly tatv planet in a unfriendly tatv sign reduces the
strenth of the house (where they are present) and presence of a friendly tatv planet in a
friendly tatv sign increases the strength of the house of there presence.

All odd numbered signs are considered male signs and they are said to be cruel signs .All
even numbered signs are considered to be female signs or soft signs.

This information is quite useful for deciding "Mahurat" at the time of undertaking a
journey. For example if one intends to travel in east direction, he should start the journey
when there is aries, leo or Sagittarius ascendant. If one has a choice to decide about the
day of travel (means there no hurry to undertake the journey immediately) then it should
be planed in such a way that moon should be there in one of the signs of the direction of
travel. For example if the journey is to be undertaken in the south direction , then moon
should be either in taurus , virgo or capricorn. By doing so one can be sure that he will
fulfill the objective of his travel.
Having learnt about the zodiac signs, it is worthwhile having some information regarding
planets also. It should be very clear that if we memorize these basic things, it will help a
lot in making excellent predictions. The base of predictive astrology is zodiac signs,
planets and the houses. After having the complete knowledge of these, the readers will be
in a position to assess that at which time any planet can give what sort of result. Like any
one person behaves in a different manner at different places or with different people; in
the same manner planets in different houses and in different zodiac signs gives totally
different results. For example the result of presence of Sun in Leo will be quite different
from its presence in Libra. The Moon in conjunction with Sun will give different result
than its conjunction with Jupiter. The method or source of giving financial gain of Jupiter
will be completely different than that of the Mars. Similarly the planets give gains or
losses in the direction of his lordship and with the things of which he is "Karka" or of his
lordship. So in my opinion it is a must to understand and memorize these characteristics.
It has been said earlier also that in Hindu Astrology we mainly consider the effect of only
nine planets -- the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. In
our ancient astrological system we have considered the effect of the presence of Gulik or
Mandhi (son of Saturn). For some specific purposes Gulik's position is still used in the
present time also.
Followings are the Natural Characteristics of the Planets:
GENDER (sex)
The Sun, the Mars and the Jupiter are male planets while the Moon, theVenus and Rahu
are female planets. Mercury, Saturn and Ketu are considered to be impotent planets.
With this information we should think that the Sun is father, Mars is brother and Jupiter is
son.

Moon and Venus are females with this it should be clear that Moon is mother and Venus
is wife. Further detailed difference will be given at relevant place.
This information helps us in assessing the nature, looks, temparament etc. of a person
while examining the horoscope. It also helps in assessing the gender of a baby prior to its
birth by examining the horoscope of the pregnant lady and her husband. It also helps in
predicting about father, mother, brother etc.
CASTE
The Jupiter and the Venus are Brahmin. The Sun and the Mars are Kshatriyas (warriors ).
The Moon vaisya (trader) and the Mercury is of mixed caste. Some are of the opinion that
moon is kshatriya and mercury is vaisya. The Saturn is the leader of shudra community
(untouchables) and Rahu & Ketu are Chandaals (low castes). The Sun, Jupiter and the
Moon are planets signifying Satva (purity, goodness). The Venus and the Mercury are
essentially the planets of Passion. The Saturn and the Mars own Tamas or darkness as
their distinguish characteristic.
When we will start studying a horoscope we will see that this information will help
assessing the type of a solution one should adopt. For example if some one brings a
horoscope to you and says that he has a dispute with somebody and how he should
resolve this issue i.e., to resolve by discussions ( Jupiter or Venus - as they are Brahmins )
or by going to courts i.e., by punishing (Sun or Mars - as they are Kshatriyas),or by
donating some money (Moon being Vaisya and remedial is donation ).This will be
directly linked with the period (mahadasa and antar dasa i.e., main period and sub period
of the planet ) through which the concerned person is passing through.
DIRECTIONS
Regarding the lordship of different directions, the Sun is considered to be the lord of
East, Moon is the lord of North-West (Vavya kon[degree]), Mars is the lord of South ,
Mercury is the lord of North, Jupiter is the lord of North-East (Eeshan Kon), Venus is the
lord of South-East (Aagney kaun), Saturn is the lord of West and Rahu & Ketu are lord of
South-West (Naratya Kaun).
This information is used while calculating that in which direction, the person in question,
might have gone (for example while solving the question of a theft, the astrologer can
predict the direction in which the thief must have gone or while calculating about a
missing person, the direction in which the missing person has left can be predicted). The
strong planet gives benefit if we work in his direction. It also helps to know which Deity
to worship before undertaking a journey in a particular direction.
COLORS
Sun is of red and little mixed color, Moon is white, Mars is bright red in color, Mercury is
green ,Jupiter is golden, Venus is white, Saturn is black and deep blue also( as considered

by some learned astrologers ), Rahu has honey like color and Ketu is of brown color.
NATURE
The Sun and the Moon are Luminous. The Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and The Saturn
are star planets. Rahu and Ketu are of the nature of darkness. The Moon (waxing only),
Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are auspicious or benefic planets (out of these Jupiter and
Venus are exceedingly auspicious). The waning Moon, the Saturn, the Sun, Rahu and
Ketu are malign or malefic planets. The Mercury in conjunction with a malign planet also
becomes a malign or malefic planet. Among the malefic planets the Saturn and the Mars
are exceedingly malefic. In the first ten days of the Lunar month (starting with the bright
half i.e., shukal pakhsh or Full Moon), the Moon is of moderate strength. During the
second period of ten days (starting from tenth of shukal pakhsh to fifth of krishan pakhsh
i.e., the dark half), the Moon is Very strong and is very auspicious. During the third
period of ten days (starting from fifth of krishan pakhsh to Amavasya i.e., No Moon) he
has no strength, but will prove auspicious if aspected(glanced) by benefic planets.
At the stage of reading a horoscope this information will form the bases for calculating
that the beneficial period or period of loss, which part of the body will be weak or strong,
etc.
The articles of the apparel of the planets and the places assigned to them are as under:
PLANETS THEIR APPROPRIATE PLACES

THEIR APPAREL ARTICLES

Sun
Moon

Coarse clothes
New clothes

Mars
Mercury
Jupiter
Venus
Saturn

Temples, places of worship

Marshy places
(low watery ground )
Fire places
(kitchen, engine room etc. )
Play grounds
Treasure rooms
Harems (women's living places)
Hillocks, useless places

Burnt clothes
Wet clothes
Medium clothes
Extremely fine clothes
Rags, torn clothes

The information regarding the appropriate places of different planets is used to assess the
hideout of criminals, stolen articles or lost animals, place where a kidnapped person
could be etc.
The query of a cloth merchant regarding the type of the cloth he should trade in to have
profits can be calculated from this information also.
SOME OTHER CHARECTERISTICS
The Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are considered the lords of

bones, blood, bone marrow, skin, fat, semen and nerves respectively in a human body. In
western astrology Mars is considered as the representative of blood and Mercury of
nervous system.
The Sun and Mars are metal representative. The Moon and Saturn are of plants. The
Jupiter and Venus represents living beings. The Mercury is mixed i.e., metal, plant and
living beings also.
If some planet is in a benefic position, then the benefit will be in the form or through
whom can be decided using this information.
The Universe is composed of five basic tatvas (elements). These are Earth (Prithvi Tatva),
Water (Jal Tatva), Fire (Agni Tatva), Air (Vayu Tatva) and Sky (Aakash Tatva). The Sun
and Mars are of Agni Tatva, the Moon and Venus are of Jal Tatva, the Mercury is of
Prithvi Tatva, the Jupiter is of Aakash Tatv and the Saturn is of Vayu Tatva .
The Sun and the Moon are the King and Queen, the Jupiter and Venus are Ministers, The
Mercury is Prince, the Mars is the army General and the Saturn is the messenger.
The Sun is the soul of Kalapurusha; the Moon, his mind; Mars, his strength; Mercury, his
speech ; Jupiter, the essence of all his knowledge and happiness; Venus, his desire or his
lust, and the Saturn, his misery.
The several constituents of Kalapurusha will be strong or weak in proportion to the
strength of the several planets representing them. The Saturn is an exception to this.
When Saturn is strong, there is less of misery; when he is weak, misery predominates.
The effects of these qualities will reveal themselves during the periods and sub-periods of
the planets concerned.
All planets, with full sight (purna drishti), looks at (glance) the seventh house from the
house of their placement (where they are positioned) in a horoscope.
The Mars looks at fourth and eight houses also (in addition to seventh house) with full
sight but rest of the planets look at fourth and eighth houses with three-fourth of the sight.
The Jupiter looks at fifth and ninth houses also (in addition to seventh house) with full
sight but rest of the planets looks at these houses (fifth and ninth) with one -half sight
only.
The Saturn looks at third and tenth houses also (in addition to seventh house) with full
sight but rest of the planets looks at these houses (third and tenth) with one-fourth sight
only.
Nothing has been said regarding sight of Rahu and Ketu since they are only shadow
planets. They do not have any sight; this is one school of thought. Another school of

thought says that the Rahu is like Saturn and Ketu is like Mars.
Another group of learned astrologers are of the opinion that Rahu and ketu behaves like
lord of the bhava (house) in which they are placed in a horoscope or like the planet with
whom they are placed in a horoscope.
NATURAL ENEMITY AND FRIENDSHIP AMONG PLANETS

IMMEDIATE FRIENDSHIP OR ENEMITY OF THE PLANETS

Beside having the natural friends or enemies, the planets do have immediate friends
(tatkalik mitra) or immediate enemy (tatkalik shatru) according to their placement in a
horoscope. Any planet consider all other planets, which are placed in second, third,
fourth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth house from its placement, as immediate friends and all
planets, which are placed in fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth from its placement, as
immediate enemies.
It should be clear that planets placed in the same house consider each other as immediate
enemies.
As explained above, the planets have two types of friendship i.e., natural and immediate,
so to conclude the relationship between the planets, in a horoscope, we use the simple
way given below:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Natural Friend + Immediate Friend =Great Friend (Param Mitra)

Natural Friend + Immediate Enemy =Neutral (Sum)
Natural Enemy + Immediate Enemy =Bitter Enemy (Param Shatru)
Natural Enemy + Immediate Friend = Neutral (Sum)
Natural Neutral + Immediate Friend =Friend (Mitra)
Natural Neutral + Immediate Enemy =Enemy (Shatru)

EXALTED OR DEBLIATED SIGNS FOR PLANETS

There are certain zodiac signs in which some planet is said to be exalted and becomes
very strong and thus gives very good result. Every plant is debilitated in the seventh sign
from the sign of its exaltation and is very weak in this position and gives very bad result.
It is very important to know these positions of exaltation or debilitation as the result
given by a planet depends on the strength of the planet .Following are the signs of
