Mystery, Romance
And Franchising
niversity of Alabama
professor James Combs
took everything he knew
about college textbooks and threw
it out the window when he agreed
to co-author a graphic novel on
franchising last year.
Published in June 2011,
Tales of Garcn: The Franchise
Players is one of the most current textbooks on the subject of
franchising and family business,
yet its gripping story line and
illustrations resemble that of a
comic book. Combs, a professor of
management and marketing in the
Culverhouse College of Commerce
and Business Administration, is
pioneering a new approach to
learning about business through
his work with the graphic novel
literature.

rowing up in Enterprise,
Ala., Sherell Harrison
participated in gymnastics
and played sports with neighboring
children and her two older brothers.
When it was time to select a college,
campus visits were not on her
agenda.
I always knew where I wanted
to go Alabama, Harrison said.
As an African-American,
Harrison said she did not consider
anything more than the normal
issues freshmen face when going
to college. Her two brothers
enrollment at the University
gave her opportunities to spend
time on campus. She had not felt
uncomfortable or experienced
prejudices on her visits, so following
the family tradition was an easy
decision; she was Tuscaloosa-bound.
Harrison received her
accounting degree in May. Her
pleasant tone and ease when
discussing her collegiate career
indicates that she has been happy
with her choice of the Culverhouse
College of Commerce and Business
Administration. Although she feels
comfortable among her peers,
Harrison understands the value of
recruiting and maintaining a diverse
student body and faculty.
You feel more comfortable if
youre around your own race, said
the UA graduate student.
Dealing with diversity can be a
daunting task. But the Culverhouse
College of Commerce has created a
welcoming environment and level
playing field for all students. Joining
the Universitys goal to recruit and
retain a diverse campus community,
Culverhouse is proud of its student
body, according to William E.
Jackson III, professor of finance.
Not only are we a diverse group,
but a group that is succeeding,

of the Future.
Imagine that you changed the future. That with your help,
someone became a teacher who turned at-risk students
into high achievers. Or a professor who discovered a
medical breakthrough.
How can you make this happen? Establish a donor-advised
fund at The University of Alabama. You recommend
grants to support public charities dear to your heart. Like
those active in the arts, education, health care and human
services. The fund is similar to a charitable foundation,
minus the administrative burdens. You receive an
immediate tax deduction and investment alternatives that
provide choices on how your fund can grow.
To learn how a donor-advised fund at The University of Alabama
can fulfill your ongoing commitment to philanthropy, call

In memoriam
Thomas Clark Canterbury, longtime registrar at the Culverhouse
College of Commerce and Business Administration, died April 8.
Canterbury was born Oct. 20, 1948, in
Florence, Ala. He attended Coffee High
School and upon graduation entered The
University of Alabama. At the University,
he participated in the Student Government Association and organized campus
activities. He graduated with a bachelors
degree in marketing and shortly thereafter joined the staff at C&BA, where he
served as a registrar for 35 years.
Canterbury became a well-known,
loved and respected figure at the University. He assisted countless students in
completing their requirements for graduation and was a tireless worker in many
aspects of University life. He retired from
UA in 2008.
Canterbury was a man of dignity and
strength and a husband and father nonpareil. He was known by everyone he
touched as a keeper of wisdom and one
to be consulted on the most important
of decisions and deliberations. He was a
long-time champion of equal rights, having worked in the civil rights campaigns
of the 1960s. Throughout his life he remained dedicated to principles of social
justice, equal rights and peaceful resolutions of conflicts.
While at times serious, and always
thoughtful, Canterbury was also a fundamentally happy man, with an easy and
quick sense of humor and an eloquent
manner of speech. He delighted in telling stories of his experiences to whoever
might be interested in listening and did
not shy away from creative embellishments to enhance various key points of
his tales.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years,
Peggy; son, Jesse (Hana); grandson, Henry; sisters, Cindy and Jeanine (Chris);
brother, Andrew; father, William; and a
large and supportive extended family.
Memorials may be directed to Canterbury Episcopal Chapel and Student Center, 812 Fifth Ave., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401
or the Morris L. Mayer Award Fund, Office of Advancement, The University
of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487.

Parrish, of Fairfax,
Va., a student majoring in marketing and economics,
was named the first recipient of The
University of Alabamas Dr. James
Cashman Business Honors Award,
established this year to honor the
late professor of management.
Parrish, the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Don Parrish, was also named
an Austin scholar during UAs
Honors Day.
Cashman, who died in December
2011, taught management at UAs
Culverhouse College of Commerce
and Business Administration. He
joined The University of Alabama
in July 1975. He served as coordinator of the management program
area, and for the 10 years prior to
his death, he helped co-found and
build the Business Honors Program
within the business school.
David J. Heggem, associate dean
for undergraduate programs at the
business school, said Parrish was
an excellent choice for the Cashman award.
I know Jim would be very
pleased and proud of this young
woman, Heggem said. She is an
excellent student and exemplifies
the scholarship and the concern for
humanity that also characterized
Dr. Cashman.
Cashman was a nationally
known expert on the automotive
industry and was the lead consultant in the development of Saturn
Corp.s organizational development
and design program. He was part
of the six-person team that helped
to develop Saturn from a concept
to a reality. He frequently appeared
for interviews on National Public
Radios Marketplace and was often
interviewed on regional and worldwide television.
