THEORIESOFELASTICFAILURE
Whiledealingwiththedesignofstructuresormachineelementsoranycomponentofaparticularmachinethephysical
propertiesorchiefcharacteristicsoftheconstituentmaterialsareusuallyfoundfromtheresultsoflaboratoryexperimentsin
whichthecomponentsaresubjecttothesimplestressconditions.Themostusualtestisasimpletensiletestinwhichthevalue
ofstressatyieldorfractureiseasilydetermined.
However,amachinepartisgenerallysubjectedsimultaneouslytoseveraldifferenttypesofstresseswhoseactionsare
combinedtherefore,itisnecessarytohavesomebasisfordeterminingtheallowableworkingstressessothatfailuremaynot
occur.Thus,thefunctionofthetheoriesofelasticfailureistopredictfromthebehaviorofmaterialsinasimpletensiletestwhen
elasticfailurewilloccurunderanyconditionsofappliedstress.
Anumberoftheorieshavebeenproposedforthebrittleandductilematerials.
StrainEnergy:Theconceptofstrainenergyisoffundamentalimportanceinappliedmechanics.Theapplicationoftheload
producesstraininthebar.Theeffectofthesestrainsistoincreasetheenergylevelofthebaritself.Henceanewquantity
