INTRODUCTION

The United Kingdom's capability in this

important area has already been
established, tested and perfected over
several decades of impressive and
profitable exploration and production of
the North Sea oil and gas reserves.
Many challenges have been overcome
through the efficiency of well trained
craft workers, technicians, support
personnel, engineers and managers. The
United Kingdom business and
educational sectors reacted to demand
by equipping industry workers with the
qualifications and skills training needed
to deal with complex commercial,
technological and management matters.
Universities, institutions and training
providers in the United Kingdom offer a
very broad range of courses that can
often be adapted to meet the specific
needs of national and international
operators, service companies,
government and non-government
institutions and organisations. Usually
the courses are given locally, but
blended learning is increasingly and
frequently used to help offset
operational or budgetary constraints.
Promoting competence in health and
safety in the oil and gas industry is a
priority the world over. As one of the
best regulated working environments
in the world, the United Kingdom has
developed and now offers a highly
sophisticated range of training
programmes and competence
assessment methods in health, safety,
environmental management, survival
and management of emergencies
among many others.
The United Kingdom's oil and gas
industry has traditionally worked very
closely with the education and training

sector to ensure that the courses cover

all the levels of training necessary,
including basic, technical and
professional skills, education at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels,
as well as specialised, short courses.
Some of the main universities and
institutions have established business
training programmes for clients in
most of the major producing basins in
Northern Europe, the Middle East,
West and North Africa, South America
and the Far East.
The institutions listed here are
committed to providing their services
that meet the individual needs of clients;
therefore this guide will be of immediate
use to those who have responsibility for
the development of a competent,
professional and safe workforce.
It is the intention of the British
Council and UK Trade and Investment
that this document should continue to
be developed as a useful resource.

THE CHEVENING
SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAMME

61

THE CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAMME

REQUIREMENTS:

Chevening scholars study in the UK for

at least 3 months. The majority study
for postgraduate degrees, particularly
Masters courses. However, applications
for shorter vocational or professional
courses as long as they are adequately
challenging and relevant are also
considered. Chevening scholarships can
be used to study most subjects,
however in different countries they
may target a narrower range of
subjects that are especially relevant. In
the past, subject areas have included:

A graduate with proven

academic skills.

AREAS:

Have a clear idea how their

scholarship will benefit their
country on their return.

Law and human rights

Economics and politics
International relations
Communications, media and
journalism
Development and gender studies
Business administration
Public administration
Management
Environmental studies
Finance and accountancy
Science and technology
Medicine and health
Engineering
Computing and information
technology
Arts and humanities
Sociology and other social sciences
Education
English language training and
linguistics
Transport studies
Sports management

Competition for Chevening

scholarships is intense, and only one in
every 25 applicants is successful. A
typical successful applicant would be:

Committed to return to their

country and contribute to the
socio-economic development of
their country through
implementing new skills and
knowledge acquired in the UK.
Be able to show at interview that
they possess the personal qualities
to benefit from their scholarship
and use it to succeed in their
chosen career.

Have good English Language skills

and must have an IELTS of 6.5.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
The Chevening Scholarship Programme
is a truly global programme and
operates in over 150 countries around
the world. As the programme is so
diverse and far-reaching there isn't a
single timetable for applications and
so it is important to check with the
local British Council office for country
deadlines for applications.
Although the timetable for deadlines
may change from country to country the
application process remains the same.
Each country will advertise when they
are inviting applications for Chevening
scholarships and will state their deadline
for applications. Applications will not be
dealt with after the stated date.

Stage 1: Applications are checked

to ensure that the applicant meets
the standard Chevening criteria (see
above under requirements) plus any
other specified local criteria (stated
on the country pages of the
Chevening website and in the
local advertisements).
Stage 2: If an application meets all of
the criteria for the scholarship then
the candidate will be short-listed and
the local office will invite them to
attend an interview.
Stage 3: Candidates will be
interviewed by a panel of
interviewers normally consisting of
a member of the British Embassy or
High Commission and a member of
the British Council.
Stage 4: As the competition for
scholarships is intense and funds
limited, it is not possible to recommend
for all successful candidates the length
of award and level of study requested
on their application.
Any award of a Scholarship is
conditional on the following:
confirmation from the Foreign and
Commonwealth Office in London
that the nomination is acceptable;
there being sufficient funds
available;
the British Council being able
to place candidates on a
suitable course;
the British Council being satisfied
with the results of a medical
examination which candidates
will be asked to undertake prior
to departure.

SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT
AND COVER:
There are different types of award
which range from fully funded
scholarships that cover tuition fees,
monthly stipend and various one-off
allowances to part funded
scholarships which can vary from
award to award and cover part/full
stipend and/or allowances.

The prestigious Chevening scholarships

are offered in over 150 countries and
in 2006/07 they enabled 1838 talented
graduates and young professionals to
become familiar with the UK and gain
skills which will benefit their countries.

62

THE CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAMME

The Chevening scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), and
managed by the British Council, the United Kingdom's international organisation for educational
opportunities and cultural relations, is one of the most important scholarship programmes in the world.
The programme offers an excellent opportunity for international future leaders and promising young
professionals, to study in renowned British universities.

CHOICE OF INSTITUTION:
Candidates have freedom of choice
when identifying the institution where
he or she wishes to study. The British
Council site specialised in education,
www.educationuk.org, has information
on over 1,500 institutions for
education in the United Kingdom.
