INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY

1.1

Purpose
The purpose of this document is to provide general guidance and information on
the repair of existing sewers. Over the past three decades, many methods have
been developed to repair sewer systems without the excavation and disruption of
conventional "dig and replace" repair. These methods are often referred to as
"Trenchless Technology" or "No-Dig" repair methods. There are presently over
50 different trenchless methods with over 500 contractors providing services for
these techniques worldwide. Some of these methods are restricted to lines that
are structurally sound and are adequate in capacity. Others can restore
structural integrity, increase hydraulic capacity, or provide corrosion protection.
Sewer repair for petrochemical users, however, is a relatively new field as most
work has been done in the municipal sector. Differences between municipal and
industrial sewers include the presence of hydrocarbons, pH and temperature
fluctuations, potentially contaminated soils, as well as more stringent safety
requirements. These factors may affect materials chosen for repair (such as
grouts and liners) as well as the method of installation and total project cost.
Although repair methods generally cost less than conventional
replacement, total project costs are high, for a commonly used lining
technology (cured in place liners). Choosing the appropriate sewer repair
method can offer significant savings, not only in plants where extensive
repairs may be needed, but also when smaller jobs are undertaken.
Plants anticipating repairs can use the Sewer Repair Consumer Guide to:
Lead the user through a decision making process for choosing a repair
method in conjunction with site specific information
Narrow down available technologies to the most applicable methods
Provide the user with a listing of available suppliers for each method
and direction on where to go for additional information.

1.2

Introduction to the Consumer Guide

Selection of a repair technology is often the last step in a multi-phase
program that may include:
 Development of a repair philosophy
Collection of information on the line(s) to be repaired

PERF 94-12
SEWER REPAIR CONSUMER GUIDE

SECTON 1

 Development of a repair program.

Understanding specific site conditions as well as individual project
success criteria will aid the user in selecting the most applicable
technology.
This document presents information collected from a variety of sources
including:
Specification guides and manuals for the repair of sewers prepared by
the National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO), the
U.S. EPA, and the Water Environment Federation (WEF)
Technical papers, presentations (NO-DIG conference), input from the
Trenchless Technology Center at Louisiana Tech University
Input from other industrial users including Kodak, DuPont, and Shell
 Vendor supplied information
The compiled information has been grouped into two sections:
1. Sewer Repair Decision Tree:
The sewer repair decision tree presents factors to be considered
when choosing a repair method (described in more detail in Section
1.3). As no single repair method is appropriate for every situation,
these factors should be reviewed in a site specific manner so that
the most suitable method can be chosen.
2. Catalog of Sewer Repair Methods:
The catalog of sewer repair methods is divided into seven major
technology groups:
Cured In Place (CIP) Liners

Sliplining

Formed In Place (FIP) Liners

Point repair

Leak sealing and spray on liners

Trenchless line replacement

Manhole repair.

Each technology group is described in a general summary sheet.
This sheet provides information on the method, materials,
correctable defects, advantages and limitations of each group. The
summary sheet is then followed by a listing of a number of
suppliers of this technology along with specific differences and/or
attributes. Traditional dig and replace methods are not covered in
this document.

SECTON 1

Background and Use of the Sewer Repair Decision Tree

The Decision Tree, shown in Section 2.0, is modeled after decision making tools
used by many municipalities in their sewer repair programs. This tool should be
used as a first step in choosing a repair method, leading the user through a
decision making process in conjunction with site specific information. Most
questions in the Decision Tree are answered by a yes or no and are followed by
notes on the implications of each answer. Use of this tool will not necessarily
result in the selection of just one method. A number of methods may meet a
particular project's needs.
The proper use of the Decision Tree depends on a complete understanding of
the problem and its contributing factors. Collected background information
should include, but not be limited to, the following:

1. Results of recent sewer cleaning and Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) inspection

This information is needed to pinpoint the location and nature of defects
such as:
+ Small cracks and/or leaking joints
+ Large holes
+ Crushed or deformed piping
+ Leaking lateral connections
+ Are manholes to be repaired
2. Background on the physical condition of the sewer segment to be repaired
This data can be collected from records of past inspections and repairs in
the area, as built drawings, local soil and geology reports, and ground
water elevation contours. These documents can be used to provide
information on:
+ Pipe size and length
+ Construction materials and methods of installation (piping as well as
bedding material)
+ Ground water levels at the section to be repaired
+ Soil conditions surrounding the section to be repaired (clay, sand,
gravel, etc.)
3. Waste stream characterization data.
Since the acceptability of many repair materials is based on the
characteristics of the waste stream, an understanding of routine
discharges can help determine what method/materials may be used. A
few of these characteristics are:
+ pH range (maximum and minimum) for routine discharges
+ Maximum temperature of the fluid discharged
+ Potential presence of organic solvents

-3-

PERF 94-12
SEWER REPAIR CONSUMER GUIDE

SECTON 1

4. Evaluation of current and future flow requirements will help to determine if a

decrease in capacity, due to the repair method used, is acceptable.
5. Identification of the most important project success criteria such as:
+ Elimination of infiltration/exfiltration
+ Minimization of excavation activities
+ Low project cost
+ Quick project turnaround
+ Longevity of repair
+ Manhole and lateral repair
1.4

Background and Use of the Catalog of Sewer Repair Methods

The Catalog of Sewer Repair Methods, shown in Section 3.0, presents
information on available repair methods. The catalog is broken into seven major
technology groups (listed in Section 1.2). Each technology group is introduced
with a summary sheet which presents information on
 Method (general description of technology)
 Materials used
 Installation method
 Correctable defects
 Corrosion resistance
 Bypass pumping (during repair)
Ability to negotiate bends in piping
Lateral reinstatement (after completion of repair)
 General advantages and limitations
The summary sheet is followed by a table listing technology suppliers. Each
entry in the table contains information on applicable diameters, past
history/usage (municipal vs. industrial), and specific advantages and limitations.
Addresses and phone numbers are also included if the user wishes to contact
the supplier for additional information.
Each of the described processes and suppliers has different levels of project
experience in the petrochemical industry although all have been used for
municipal repair. Some are newly developed technologies and/or available only
in limited areas at this time. The catalog presents some, but by no means all,
available suppliers. The inclusion or omission of a supplier or method does not
reflect on its acceptability.

1.5

Conclusions
Due to the increasing age of sewer systems in petrochemical plants, the
frequency of repair activities is expected to increase. In the past, industrial users
have often limited their experience to a few widely used, well established,

-4-

PERF 94-12
SEWER REPAIR CONSUMER GUIDE

SECTON 1

methods. Through a better understanding of the different trenchless methods

and suppliers available, additional cost effective methods may be identified.
Trenchless repair methods offer many advantages over conventional dig and
replace methods including:
Minimization of disturbances to the surrounding area
+ Less solid waste produced
+ Less road/other rehabilitation after repair
Reduced exposure to the sewer, creating a safer working environment
Repair of most lines can be completed at a lower cost in a fraction of the time
The information contained in the Consumer Guide can assist the user in pairing
his/her specific problem and success criteria with an appropriate repair
method(s).

Cured In Place (CIP) Liners

Comments

Method

A thermosetting resin saturated liner is inserted into the existing pipe. Inversion is
accomplished through inversion or by winching into place. If winched into place,
the liner is inflated using air or water pressure. The resin is cured with hot water
or steam.

Materials

The liner is of fabric (felt), woven fiberglass is sometimes used to provide

additional strength - Polyester, vinyl ester, or epoxy resins can be used

Installation
Method

Remote installation through manholes.

Bypass Pumping
Required

Yes for most CIP liners - Econoliner, used for point repairs, has a flow through
packer used for installation

Correct Holes

Yes

Negotiate Bends

Most can handle up yo 45 degree bends. Some manufacturers claim up to 90

degree bends are possible. There is some wrinkling of the liner at bends.

Corrosion
Resistance

Depends on resin type - vinyl ester resin is usually used for industrial applications

Lateral
Reinstatement

Laterals are opened robotically from within the pipe after repair of the main line is
complete.

Comments

Method

Jointless extruded HDPE or PVC pipe is deformed into a U shape making its
initial diameter less than that of the pipe to be repaired. The deformed pipe is
pulled into the host pipe and inflated and cured with air pressure/steam.

Materials

Continuous lengths of HDPE or PVC

Installation
Method

Remote installation through manholes

Bypass Pumping
Required

Yes

Correct Holes

Yes

Negotiate Bends

Most can handle up to 30 degree bends. Some manufacturers claim that up to 90

degree bends are possible. There is some wrinkling of the liner at bends.

Corrosion
Resistance

Excellent in general usage - Not to be used in solvent service

Lateral
Reinstatement

Laterals are opened robotically from within the pipe after repair of the main line is
complete.

Advantages

Limitations

PERF.11/19/96

Lower set-up costs when compared to CIP liners

No installation trench needed
No reduction in capacity after repair
Relies on existing pipe for support (cannot be used where damage is severe)
Seals laterals which require reopening after repair
Lateral/main connections may still leak after initial repair (if laterals are not
sealed separately)

Point Repair
Category

Method

Comments
Used where otherwise structurally sound pipe is experiencing leaks at joints or isolated
cracks and/or holes. Three major categories:
Manual point repair for large diameter lines
Internal grouting of joints, cracks, and/or holes done remotely using a packer or robot.
Movement of the packers and robots are controlled
from the surface using closed circuit TV.
Point repair with segmental linings (CIP) or mechanical seals.
Dependant on method used

Installation Method

Can be completed remotely from the surface (through manholes) - Manual application for
large lines.

Bypass Pumping
Required

Flow bypassing is required for most methods, however, some packers have flow through
capabilities.

Correct Holes

Yes - Not cost effective for lines with many defects

Negotiate Bends

Yes - Degree of maneuverability dependant on method used

Corrosion Resistance

Grouts used are corrosion resistant, however, point repairs cannot solve a base case
corrosion problem.

Lateral Reinstatement

Point repair will not seal off laterals. Point repairs can seal connections between main line
and lateral.

Advantages

Limitations

PERF.11/19/96

Low cost repair method when defects are limited to isolated cracks and small holes.
No installation trench needed
Robots are multifunctional. They have connections for grinding down
protruding laterals, grout injection, trowelling, etc.
Line must be structurally sound. Not cost effective for lines with many defects
Chemical grouts may lose effectiveness in solid with fluctuation moisture content
Many grouts may lose effectiveness in contaminated soils
Cannot repair leaks that are not identified through camera (visual) inspection
Point repairs cannot correct for base case corrosion problems

PIPE BURSTING

Method

Used where lines are structurally failing or are inadequate capacity. Two
categories:
Pipebursting: The old pipe is broken out using radial forces from a pneumatic
rammer head pulled through the existing pipe. The new pipe
is
dragged in behind.
Microtunneling: A remote control laser guided boring machine used to install a
new pipeline. As the machine advances, the new pipe is
jacked in behind the machine to fill the void.
The new pipe can be HDPE, PVC, fiberglass, etc.

Installation Method

Reinstatement
Advantages

Limitations

Depends on material of new pipe

PERF.11/19/96

Both microtunneling and pipebursting destroy lateral connections. These

connections must be reopened externally after repair.
Increases in pipe capacity are possible
Can be used to replace concrete and clay piping
Often more economical than dig and replace for failing pipelines
Can be used in difficult ground conditions: under groundwater etc.
An installation trench is needed
Cannot accommodate bends
Destroys lateral connections
Requires high degree of skill, especially where there are many surrounding
pipelines and/or other underground obstructions. Specialized
crew often required.
Not all pipe materials are amenable to pipebursting (see decision tree)

Manhole Repair
Comments

Method

Manhole rehabilitation is carried out using many of the same methods used for line
rehabilitation ranging from complete replacement (dig and replace), to point repair
(grouting), spray on coatings, cured in place liners, and HDPE inserts.

Materials

Dependant on method used (see table)

Installation Method

Most methods require entry into the manhole

Bypass Pumping
Required

Yes for most methods

Correct Holes

Yes - some coatings and flood groutings cannot repair large holes and cracks

Negotiate Bends

N/A

Corrosion
Resistance

Depends on repair method used. HDPE inserts and many spray on epoxies exhibit
excellent corrosion resistance while flood grouting and some grouting methods cannot
solve base case corrosion problems.

Main Line
Reinstatement

Spray on coatings, point repairs, and flood grouting do not seal off main lines. When
inserts are used, connections to the main line are reinstated after repair.
