Homeboy Industries & LEGACY United!!
Since the launching of the
LEGACY Youth Project last
year we have forged a very
special relationship with
Homeboy Industries of Los
Angeles. The past spring
LEGACY co-hosted Homeboy
Industries Executive Director
Hector Verdugo and
Substance Abuse Counselor
and Artist Fabian Debora
during the screening of the documentary G-Dog. During the
summer, the LEGACY youth took a field trip to Los Angeles
to visit Homeboy Industries.

Working with Fabian helped

me see people who work hard
on what they love to do can
accomplish their dreams
even if they had bad past.
-Lauro Avila, 10th

This past Fall, Fabian came back to visit LEGACY. Sharing

his inspirational and transformative story from gang life,
drug abuser to becoming Homeboy Industries Substance
Abuse Counselor, artist, community leader, husband and
father. He also took an entire day teaching the LEGACY
youth in mural painting, while cultivating a mentorship
relationship with the youth. The youth are working hard to
finish the mural and look forward to presenting the mural to
the community.

Tutoring & Mentoring Increases Student

Academic Performance!
This past semester the LEGACY youth worked hard to
increases their academic success. This past Fall
semester 75% of our LEGACY students increased their
Grade Point Averages! A major component to the
LEGACY Youth Project is our Academic Achievement.
One way we make this happen is through the support
and leadership from our Tutors/Mentors, a.k.a Young
Community Leaders. Each week the LEGACY class is
visited by 8 Napa Valley College students, 4
community professionals and 4 Vintage High School
students who all
volunteer
their time to support the
academic success of our
LEGACY students. One
great outcome to the
tutoring experience is the
relationship our LEGACY
students build with the
Young Community
Leaders, transforming
academic support into a
mentorship relationship!
